Hello everyone! It took me a long time to get the pictures ready, but I'm finally able to share another army project I started this year: O-12. As with my Kosmoflot, I took my paint scheme for this faction from a 2D artist I really like: Theo Stylianides. He has a whole range of retro-scifi space knight drawings that I felt would be perfect for the O-12 aesthetic. Here are a few examples: Unlike my Kosmoflot, this time I didn't go for a 1:1 match of unit and artwork, but rather followed a more general adaptation process: Dark and light creams, browns, and muted accent colors of reds, blues, and mustard yellow. Here's the big group shot of everything I managed to paint this year: As you can see, the one major deviation I allowed myself was adding a bright accent color for the light sources, to create a strong contrast and break up the very muted palette. I settled on a bright orange, feeling it would pop the most and contrast nicely with the base design. Speaking of bases: I got the idea came from Studio Jolly Roger, feeling I would be able to create some very striking and effective bases with minimal effort. Since the experience with my Nomads bases, I decided to keep base design for new armies to a minimum. Alright, enough talk. Here are the minis. I'll add more pictures as I finish them. Thank you guys! I'm curious to see what that looked like. Here's the first update. I'm taking part in a local escalation league to build my O12. We're now at the 200pt threshold, and these were my additions this month. I added the individual pictures to the first post above. You'll find them as Katherine Cho Millicent Copperbot 2x Team Sirius The two bots will also serve as proxies for the new Roadbot.
Added the Gangbuster and Defiance Delta. They were part of the first wave of minis I painted last June. For the Gangbuster, I used a printed head from Unit9 to cover his not-to-my-liking goatee. The Delta I converted into a Crusher proxy by leaving away the wings and letting him swap his Spitfire with the Betatrooper's Multi Rifle.
Painted the Lambda Engineer over the weekend. Which completes the set. Truth be told, I didn't realize this guy would one day try to catch them all until I finished painting him...
A piece I was looking forward to get off my desk as much as to paint him: the Lawkeeper. Bikes just always seem to be so much work. Luckily, I could take care of most of this one with the airbrush. My reference for this one was pretty direct again. The only license I took was the orange visor. Even tried to copy the emblem on the shield.
Since the arrival of ITS14, but especially since the announcement of the Roadbot, it was clear to me that I needed a REM Racer. Luckily, I was able to grab my favorite model for free as a prize at the last tournament I attended: The Underworld Fixer from the Dire Foes Mission Pack Delta. I loved the box art colors of the pants, but less of the jacket. My solution was to simply extend the synthwave gradients to the whole mini. What do you think of the result?
Oh, and I forgot: I added a little freehand on her hood to make the REM Racer thing a bit more obvious.
The Faction Starter This model was the reason I couldn't keep my hands off O-12 eventually. I don't care that it's a hacker hitting you on the head with a bonk club, he's just too cool. To be completely honest, however, I feel like I didn't do him justice. Only during painting did I notice that the head of the sculpt had some serious casting issues, and I had troubles with color consistency and brush control throughout. The only part I'm really happy with is the cloak. But I'm happy to hear what you have to say. For this guy in particular, I was referencing a specific artwork from Theo Stylianides:
Maybe a reference to Office Space (1999), "hacking" the printer. Or a cluebat or LART. Nice red lights in the helmet.
This is just stunning good - if any and very small critic is allowed - I think the face is a bit too dark, though it gives a good contrast. Very cool and creative work here: Thumps Up!
Thank you guys! That's valid feedback. I still improvise when it comes to painting black faces. I'll try to go lighter next time ;) Nothing new otherwise, just a group shot of the last few minis. They constitute my contribution to the next level of our local Escalation League, 250 points:
These are looking fantastic! Another thing you could do, if you can find them, is trying to do a bubble helmet.
Bubble is going to be complicated, but tubular... https://bombshellminis.com/36026-plastic-dome-sprue-t8/ (also helmet kit, as in collar plus domes) Same site has half bubble domes, sometimes avaliable with solid back part (helmets/domes R8, R10 and R12). Full list https://bombshellminis.com/search.php?search_query=dome Anyhow, these plastic parts look a bit thick IMHO, the one in drawing above and Mars Attacks ones are like soap bubble thin, and without optical distortion.
Guys, that's the perfect idea for my Cuervo Goldstein who's still sitting on my desk without a proper helmet. Now where to find an STL file to print something like this? In the meantime, here's my Delta from the Action Pack:
