I've just been reminded of a good recent one, Cells at Work. Not only is very interesting and entertaining, it's surprisingly accurate and educative. Once you have watched the season, go to this Youtube playlist, where an actual doctor reacts to the series and complements it with actual medical knowledge filling the inevitable knowledge gaps with a frankly terribly contagious dose of enthusiasm.

If you like military stuff. I highly recommend the GATE. It's a bit of a look of what if a modern military went up against fantasy troops.

Yeah, it's ... hilarious at points just how hopelessly outclassed the folks from the wrong side of the gate are. Roman Legions versus 155mm artillery. Helicopter assault to break a siege (complete w/ Ride of the Valkyries soundtrack, it's epic). If it wasn't the Japanese Self Defense Forces, well, the idiots in the Empire would have ceased to exist.

Even better, this is all with equipment from the scrap bin that had been retired due to age.

Isn't that too much like " Japan fuck yeah ! Love the military, call of duty etc ?".
I'm tempted to give it a try but I won't like it if there is a pro military nationalist message behind the anime.

The author of the web novel was JSDF, and the web novel got into some ultranationalist politics. Those got toned down in the light novel, and toned down again in the anime because ultranationalist bullshit doesn't sell in LN or anime markets.

It does correctly note that the Japanese media is extremely critical of the JSDF.
Media: "The villagers lost 25% of their numbers 'while under your protection,' explain yourself!"
Main Character: "They were attacked by a Red Dragon, it's scales are impervious to .50 fire, we had to use an antitank missile just to drive it away!"
Local witnesses: "Are you stupid?!? It's a natural disaster! We're amazed that 75% of the villagers survived!"

I'm also going to note that the story literally starts with a Fantasy Roman Legion with wyvern knights invading downtown Ginza, Tokyo, during the day, killing, raping, and enslaving thousands of civilians. So my tolerance for the invaders has already been removed.

"Excuse me, sir, but we really need to talk about this unprovoked act of aggression," would be a very good description of the Japanese government's position.

The overall tone of most of the series is "we are going to get our people back, and then we are going to break your country economically to make sure you don't get stupid ideas like that again." The main character is called a 'salary thief' to his face by his own subordinates, someone in the JSDF solely to fund his hobbies by his own admission. Until he pulls out several levels of badass, but even then he is trying to do things with minimal effort for maximum effect.

Pretty much as @Section9 put it. Most of the time the Japanese are trying to create peace with them through diplomacy. The only thing I wish there as a bit more of was scientists coming over and studying the world. For all intense and purposes this is an "alien" world. They never establish if it's another world within our Universe or an alternate reality.

The Japanese know they could just take over and yet they don't. Both because it's wrong but also because there would be hell to pay with other countries.

Just found out that Legend of the Galactic Heroes is now available through Prime but...
It jumps from episode 1 to 5
Basically the only parts that remain are the political ones when the pwee-pwee ones have been removed.

    A little necro thread. . .

But anyway I still trump the usual trumpet. . .

"Appleseed" and "Ghost In The Shell" in Manga, Anime (Short Cartoon OAVs or Longer CG Movies) and even the Live Action Movie by Scarlett Johannson (realized with a lot of issues, but was a brave idea anyway; still I cherish My Bray with Special Features of it) even if not very germane to the Topic. . .

Of GITS there were also well done Manga that were not drawn by Masamune Shirow (nowaday almost impossible to have the FORMER Mangaka Cyberpunk Sensei draw something that is NOT disgustingly gross PORN, but if it pays His bills. . . . . ) about "Arise" and SAC. . .

Instead found the "Not Japanese Manga" about Major Motoko Kusanagi, Batou and the rest of the Kodaku Kidotai too jarringly different from the usual style; the Stories were not bad at all, but the Drawings I personally found very unappealing. . .

Indeed but such threads are timeless :innocent:
By the way, the missing episodes are now available. It could have been an interface issue or a delay in availability during the publishing process.

It's a good one to have back! I've been watching way too much anime lately lol. Funny thing though is I've been more attached to the Slice of Life type stuff rather than anything violent. Laughing hard to My Dress Up Darling. Totally into Blue Period. And I've watched Laid Back Camp for 3rd or 4th time now.

I've been trying to get into some of the Chinese fantasy anime's out there. Of which there are many. But some are are soooo Chinese it's hard to get into the story. Meaning it's very steeped in culture that it's hard to understand some things. Then it's fantasy versions of stuff as well. A lot of them are about Tao/Energy/Chi cultivation, and if you have no idea about that, you will be lost.

Slice of life has been the anime I've ended up watching the most. Maid Sama, Torodora, Nagatoro, Ouran Host Club, are just some of the ones I've seen. Maid Sama was the second anime I had seen with the first anime being Eyeshield 21 a football anime that almost covered all the manga issues except for the final two games and the series epilogue. You'll have to look up those parts of the story after the show ends. I did cause I wanted to know how the tale ended.

I watch animes in Japaneses with English subtitles. I sort of prefer this to the English voice acting or dubs. I think most f the time the original actors and actress do a better job and the voices sound better suited for the characters more often. Though there are times where the dub has done a better job at voicing or bringing a character to life than the Japanese ones.

I do both if I really like the show. Also you can't put a show on "in the background" with sub. But sometimes I like the dub more if they have really good voice actors. They make some Japanese jokes and other things make more sense. I'm not a purist. If it makes no sense, it makes no sense. Another I like is they sometimes tone down the damn yelling and screaming of some of the characters. That can really make me dis like an anime if a character doing nothing but yelling and screaming all of the time. I couldn't get past a couple episodes of Black Clover because the main character only knew how to talk in scream!

As a general rule I prefer to watch anything in its original language with subtitle but when it comes to series (anime or not) it really depends on the level of attention I put in it. Easier to follow from a distance if it's English but for languages I don't understand but don't want to focus to much I need it dubbed in French.
As for @Space Ranger some animes could be too much yelling for me.

For movies I'm either in a theatre or stuck in the couch so I won't multitask.

Fun fact I've seen GITS twice before its release in theatres because of convention display. Once undubbed with English sub and one English dubbed with no subs. I found the English version harder to follow because it was English spoken with a Japanese pace which felt very strange for me.

One of the reasons I like subtitles is just because I'm getting old and can't hear things sometimes lol. I watch everything with subtitles now lol. :sleepy:
I hate though when they talk so fast and I need to go back and re-read what was said several times!

I never had that problem. Been able to read the subtitles before they disappear and the next lines appear.

I've looked into that and it seems good so far.
I also looked up how Maid Sama ended in the manga cause I liked the anime so much.

"My Dress Up Darling" is not my usual "Cup Of Tea" as I usually do NOT even consider Anime and Manga that have AT LEAST some modicum of Action (one of My nephew, 12 Years Old, forced Me to watch three episodes in a row of a VERY Weird "High School Romance" with Sailor Dressed Kawaii Prettybabes that was a TOTAL confusion of Script, even if it was translated, the Plot summed to "Rival Qeen Bee Wannabees" that sabotage each other Love Interests, was NOT even "Silly Slapstick Comedy" or "Sappy Heartfelt Romance" but only "Horrible People Doing Horrible Things To Other Horrible People"; what is the point of a similar Anime ???). . .

But the Psychological Profile of the Two Protagonists is rather WELL done and explore "Broken People" that find solace on the Subculture of Cosplayers, even if the "Cool Dudes & Sexy Gals" of their High School see them as "Hopelessly Otakus". . .

Honestly I'm grateful to God that I was NOT born in Japan (even if I live in one of the SHITTIEST Parts Of Italy) or I would have finished either a "Failed Yakuza" or a "Nihon-Sekigun Terrorist, Shot Down By Police". . .

Oriental Culture of the "Civilian People" is something I could not fathom to live in; probably will break even under the Pressure of their Military, but at least there "You Eat Psychological Shit To Become Stronger" (or at least is the theory; don't know the Suicide Rate in the Armed Forces of Japan SDF, China People Army, South Korean Soldiers or Taiwan Guard, but for CIVILIANS is appallingly high !!!). . .

Lately i've been getting into isekai, but only into unusual isekai, my current ones are "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime", "So I'm a Spider, So What?", "I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level" and "Ascendance of a Bookworm". All isekai, but each one rather different than your boring power fantasy (two start with the main character being the lowest level mob in an RPG, although one gets very lucky while the other gets her personal Dark Souls run, another is a wholesome slice of life disguised as an isekai, and the other seems to be like a speedrun of the Enlightenment or something, hard to describe). Since all have their anime seasons ended and none more are happening at anything you'd call "soon" i have gone to the source materials, already up to date in all the translated material on the Spider (which i understand finished in Japan this year so i'm close to the end) and Slime (which still has plenty to go and is unfinished), and started on the witch (still a bit to go before i catch up), with the bookworm next.

Anyone else going to the source materials (manga or novels)?

About Isekai Anime & Manga there is an all-rage here in Italy about Sword Art Online. . .

The "Classic" Fantasy never stomached it all overmuch, but of the "Arrival Of Firearms" episodic version (protagonist the Young SAO Girl Player that manage to find an H&KPSG1 that is, more or less, "Excalibur Magic Sword In Sniper Rifle Form") was far more of My liking. . .

Nothing like mowing down Goblins and Orcs with Vulcan Gatlings and Heavy Machineguns and shooting down Red Dragons with Grenade Launchers and RPG. . . !!
