That lawsuit was mostly about trademarks. Also the reason Imperial Guard are now Astra Militarum and Space Marines are Adeptus Astartes. Judge found their original trademark names too common in everyday usage and thus null and void. And Chapterhouse did actually lose several copyright claims to GW and had to remove them from the store, and also pay for damages.
The parts where GW lost was where Chapterhouse was making models that GW didn't, but that looked like GW product and had statlines in the codex. There was no art, just a verbal description of the Thunderwolf Cavalry (at the time), so Chapterhouse made models. With anime and manga, the Japanese are a lot more tolerant of 'inspired by' than the West is.
Been playing Titanfall 2 recently, I like their designs for the most part aside from the giant sword on the Ronin, they seem chunky, believable and quite utilitarian at least visually.
