@RobertShepherd Is Jaan available in the Army Builder now? I've search for him but he doesn't show up. Does this mean the other Defiance character are going to be added to their factions/sectorials soon?

He's not - I'm using a vanilla kiiutan as a placeholder until then.

I would assume since we've seen the profiles already that we can expect them sooner rather than later.

So had a preliminary game with Staar last night using the list above. Pretty ok performance; he collapsed in a Nomad flank, taking down a Lunkuhod safely and pushing up to eliminate a Morlock (taking a wound in the process) then laying a bunch of mines in the Nomad DZ. At that point I should have just pulled back and left him there but I wanted to push to see what he could do and he went and fought an intruder with combi rifle at 10" (Staar was burst 3 on 9s and the intruder was burst 1 on 13s; not a great face to face either way) and died.

For the cost he feels about on par with the Fiday with mines that I've used a lot in Haqq - or mabye just a little worst, but it's still good company to be in. The full impersonation state is so much stronger than the feeble inferior impersonation, and the Fiday's smoke is almost irreplaceable, but Staar has higher BS and the whole extra wound, which is a big deal. A lot of my local players build defenses around chain rifles watching close angles, and being able to guarantee blowing through e.g. a Kuang Shi on a corner with a volley of viral fire to reach the gooey center is a pretty big deal.

Not going to play him immediately again in future because my mind has been seized by the idea of a quad sakiel list. I haven't written it yet, and it's probably bad, but it might not be.

I see that human ideals have swayed you from the true path of the trisakiel list. I expected more from you.

Listen if I could take six symbiomates it'd be a nice round six sakiel list. But there's design constraints at play here. Don't hate me.

I really like this list. He's testing an attack pattern where he attacks with the Draal with SMG turn one, then follows up with the marksman Draal in tricore on turn two. It lets him stagger the stratuscloud activations to last longer into the game, and he absolutely suckered me with it in our last game where I played a Dashat list that just got dismantled.

For this game, we played capture and protect. The table had high ground with some buildings on my right, easing down into a sort of industrial valley, then thinner high ground on the left with less cover. The table was pseudo-friendly to snipers, but not necessarily dominated by them (we both had snipers with long lines of fire but both could be bypassed by a single smoke grenade/white noise zone in most cases).

    I won the roll and sort of wanted to go first, but also needed to use the gents so I picked deployment and bolted. My opponent picked first, and set up to attack the same way he’d punched my lights out hard in a big way in our last game (lone draal attack, with the tricore hitting on turn two). A few major things played against him at this point;
    1. I'd played against it before, so I knew what was coming
    2. I was playing Tohaa, not a clustered Dashat list, so could use my symbiomate snipers to set a price of admission that would keep the draal from going too deep
    3. Ed deployed a warcor + delegate near chaksas in the ‘one of these is a sniper almost certainly but which?’ formation, except I knew which because I’d played the list before (this could have been avoided in retrospect by deploying the sniper as a delegate, i.e. two delegates) which let me disrespect one threat and respect the other; and
    4. Ed deployed making an assumption about where I’d put a sniper, and I didn’t put a sniper there (because it would have been certain death)
Instead my deployment was predicated around the usual short range AROs but also cross-board sniper fire deployed so I had a X-shape of lanes across the table, but both snipers nested down so his Taagma couldn’t get them.

This came together to basically blunt his offensive hard. His preceptor did a gun job blitzing forward, and it traded the beast for one of my mines, my libertos and revealing a clipsos, then pulled back to retain the preceptor’s order. But then he followed up with the lone Draal and it didn’t really have capacity to do more than blow out one of my symbiobeasts, and then go a couple rounds with my Gao-Rael before retreating to a rooftop to lay a dazer.

On my turn I use my Gao-Rael sniper to blow out his taagma sniper, using the dazer’s saturation zone to make the fight B2 on my part to B1 on his. This was a bit of a risk because I had lost my symbiomate, but the potential benefit was high. As it happened, I succeeded, which would leave me with two snipers to his none for the remainder of the game. Then the Nikoul picked up a Helot that had moved up to hold a staircase, and the table was open for me to maneuver on.

The rest of my turn pushed orders through both my sakiel-led triads. On the right flank, a sakiel and two makauls went up onto a roof after the draal. I throw smoke so it’s lapping up onto the roof, jump onto the roof while staying in the smoke, drop prone out of the smoke using the dazer to hide from the prone draal, throw more smoke, then do the ol’ stealth abuse melee shank to get into melee and shank the draal. Strictly speaking it shouldn’t really be necessary, but Ed’s Draal have a bad habit of viral pistoling my melee experts to death in melee and I didn’t want that opportunity to arise. All it all it takes almost the entire secondary combat group worth of orders to kill a single model, but its worthwhile.

The primary group sakiel team then activates and moves hard across the high ground on the left (the way now being clear). They pick up a chaksa kill via a long cross-board angle, and then land the shot that I was hoping I’d get when I took the LRL: a 20” range template hit into Ed’s tricore link, hitting both the single-wound infantry but only from LOF of one of them. This forces the awkward dodge from the rear model, breaks the tricore, and kills both (on a slightly egregious double crit, but it was a good F2F roll regardless). I then spend three orders pulling all the way back, because I cannot conceivably put Ed into retreat, and it’s capture and protect, so I can slow-roll.

On his turn two Ed does what he should probably have done on turn one, which is move the Draal with marksman rifle up under white noise to engage my snipers. She does well all things considered, picking off the Nikoul’s symbiomate, but it’s nothing to what she might have done with a full combat group of orders and tricore link bonuses behind her. She ends the turn in suppressive.

At this stage far too much of my army is intact and I’m able to pile on a second time. My Gao-Rael smoke-shoots the Draal down in a couple of orders, and I get an enfilade on his combat group two Kriigel and blat it. Some smoke goes down and a preceptor runs 30” across the board to grab his beacon, then 30” back to my deployment zone.

Ed needs to head out early and we conclude that there’s no real reason to play through turn three. He isn’t in loss of lieutenant because he has a kaeltar, but he just doesn’t have the resources to execute a push through my intact sniper overwatch. The most he can do is trade a chunk of his VPs to maybe deny me some OPs, which is not a worthwhile play in an event (ultimately it only hurts both players and gains neither).

Overall a really good result. Playing this kind of list is really comfortable, with the wounds on the snipers and the close-range template screen just doing a really good job of holding off early aggression before pushing to pick off exposed elements. I was really happy with the LRL in particular. Will play again.
