And wasn't that one of the biggest off-shore earthquakes ever? I know I've said it before, but in the weeks after the event, the wording in the newspapers here had a subtle shift to make it read like the power plant is what caused the earthquake/tsunami.
People are hugely ignorant about nuclear power in general. Come to think of it, that works without the "about nuclear power" bit.
Don't do a fallout reference don't do a fallout reference don't do a fallout reference. Ignorant enough to worship the Atom? Damnit.
A few years ago, some unknown flunky in the State government accounting office, noticed one department was flouting the rules on "eco-friendly" vehicles and NOT using 10% ethanol-additive fuel in their car fleet. So they mandated that ALL of those vehicles should have their tanks drained and refilled with the E-10 (as it's known) immediately. They ignored ALL requests for dispensation because the vehicles in question were "special purpose" and that E-10 is NOT suitable for use in them. They blew up approximately 2 dozen high performance engines in state police Highway patrol pursuit vehicles. The cars needed new engines as a result. This cost them government more to do than any fuel savings was ever likely to save them. They also now have an exemption from mandated "eco" friendly fuel measures.
Reminds me of a large IT company a friend worked for, new CEO decided all offices should have the same furnishings, cubicles, etc. Not the same style, or colour, the same. Result: All European offices receive entire office fitouts running 6X the cost of sourcing the furniture locally (even with custom colours), to find on arrival that the power sockets in the cubicle walls are all specced for US plugs and 110V only. They'd also forgotton to tick the box for Ethernet cabling in the cubicles sent to the UK office...
Well, I won't take a side about nuclear power on theory talk. But this kind of energy production can't suffer half-measures about security and how you take care of the building and how you seal the reactor. And here, in France, we already have discovered that the company hired to build the next generation prototype of nuclear power plant has tried to not use the concrete that should be used for sealing the reactor. And I know from my mother who worked for the meteorology state agency that the alert system isn't effective enough. So, I can understand that people ask for their shut down as it is not the nice energy production system theory gives. You can claim all you want, theory and reality don't merge well most of the time. Profits, late penalties, politic decisions... there are a lot of opportunities to make what should be the best answer into a nightmare. France is one of the most nuclearised country in the world, giving us nice low cost electricity and energy independance but this will come with a cost when we will need to close the oldest power plants that I think nobody will want to pay. And this is also true in case we suffer a nuclear accident (yes unlikely but who knows?). About the story about power sockets, I think it's not the first time this happens. Even as just tourists, you can forget to think that not everyone in the world lives by your standard.
@Brother Smoke Thats what i expected. Rural areas are not that nice, when it comes to pupblic transport or even internet communication. Its not most of Europe, its just the dumb Germans again. The other point is, that the aim is to get 65% electricity from renewal sources, we are up to 44% max at the start of this year. But that stuff bruings other problems. You have the green party wo wants to force it with offshore windparks etc. but we will need alot of power train paths, as most industrie that need that much electricity isnt even in spitting range of the coast. But if you want to build this power train paths the local green party in the federal states and the communities will veto against them, cause noone wants big powercables in his part too. Same goes for energy storage, there is stuff there but noone wants it to been build in his view. And thats just the green party where one of the top members saida few years ago in nation wide tv: "For what do we need nuclear power plants? Electricity comes out of sockets." Or just have a look at the drama of the new Berlin Airport BER to get a good insight on german politics andf politicians.
I foresee subterranean projects of pharaonic proportions to move and store electricity... 50's and 60's advertising included gems like drinking irradiated water being good for your teeth... Darwin Awards for everyone!
Well, most new tech and discovery will be passed as having excellent effects at first! Years later when you get the bad sides of that water, the money has already been made!
Well, since you could buy ointment with radium inside in the 30's and it was so fashion at that time...
In my experience, there isn't a single turn signal that actually works in Florida, so that really exacerbates the problem. I mean, that IS the only possible explanation, right?
Well there had been the idea to use old coal mines here as pumped storage power plants. As the shafts go already more than 1 km deep and there are already pumps down there to keep out the pit water and there are already ponds nearby most of the infrastructure could have been adapted. It was cancelled, cause anything with coal mining is as bad as diesel engines the devil tech. Same goes with other ideas using existing infrastructure cause it doesnt fit into the mindset of the green crusaders. (Not that i am against saving the environment, but some of this people are just over the top for me).
I can imagine flooding these mines might result in washing out substantial layers of earth, resulting in a collapse of the terrain above. We had those problems in Saxony with big holes swallowing big parts of villages. I believe it was because the salt was dissapiated in old coal mines. Nevertheless, the idea itself should not be discarded lightly. Maybe a safe reservoir in the deep could be used alongside the elevator shafts for water turbines, but what do I know. I am just a humble historian :P If people would just abandon dogma and start thinking in long term goals, rather than shortsighted gain... In other news, Boris Johnson seems to just have muted the British democracy... Sorry my dear Englishman, but how on earth is that happening
Not English here but I can explain as a reluctantly British person. You see, it turns out that an unwritten constitution, relying on something of an honour system and precedent, goes tits up when honourless scumbags steer your national government into an unprecedented situation.
Extinction Rebellion protest in busiest road in central Manchester next 4 days. I work round the corner. I'm sure inconveniencing people is a super way to get them on your side. The jurisdiction of my team at work keeps changing so much my boss is rolling his eyes about it. First we were Global IT. Then UK Risk. Then UK IT. Now we are back to falling under Global IT. I'm happy to have the work, my boss is pushing off my yearly review to see if I get more responsibility and he can try to get me a raise for it next year
Extinction Rebellion is exactly the sort of well meaning stupid that is why right wingers are winning. Not only do the jams cause extra pollution, but they crucially annoy people, who contrary to the optimistic views of the protesters, don't really care about the issue and will be swung against it if it becomes too inconvenient. Like, say, causing repeated traffic jams.
