complain loudly enough that he's bad and yj players won't take him, simples.

Answer: Counter hackers, multiple ARO covering and try not to set up in a position where he can squish multiples in a short rampage I guess. I hate playing vs this unit already.

I don't think the threat really warrants building an entire list around it. It's a bit like fighting an Impersonator... Don't position your units too closely, but still keep them in LoF for mutual support, and keep a trick up your sleeve (jammer, hidden deployment, Decoy) as added insurance. VIRD is one of the best defensive Sectorials in the game. If there's a drop on a Fusilier, double-tap that mother at BS18 and then heal after. Congratulations, you just traded up.

The bigger threat is actually spreading your troops out so thin that they aren't able to support one another vs a more conventional attack, so it's all about finding the right balance between the two. Helots and the Zulu Cobra Jammer are really good here, for plugging the gaps in a line that your Core Link can't cover. If you misdeploy and do find yourself getting jumped on, don't be afraid to Engage either. That slap fight in CC can eat a lot of Orders.

He is awesome, stealth keeps him safe until he gets to shoot like a charm

The problem is that you need to be successful twice, he has to bundle his ARM roll twice and now he has a blind spot for the second one.
I think that there is a way with the crocman, but yo have to let go any idea of deploying forward, just keep them in open spaces covering the team.

Ive faced down the LX twice now. Both times by competent players.

The first time was my opponents early games with IA, but I was aware it was a posibility and deployed my force accordingly so that when the LX did try to drop on my Kamau sniper it could not also nab the Trauma doc that was on the roof to revive it in just such an eventuality. As far as it actually went hoever the Kamau obliterated the LX with its MSR (5 man link) and then tanked the DAM12 save.

The second time I faced it I deployed in a similar manner only my opponent elected to drop in a safer position and go for your standard gunfighting. this was more successful for him, but meant dealing with the LX was on par wiht dealing with a Gao Tarsos or Fraacta.

I think you need to be aware they are a thing, and deploy accordingly, but they arent really the kind of unit that should force you to change your list too much in my opinion, even more given the Explosion is dodgeable, leaving the LX with one shot if you have set up your defenses correctly.

You are welcomed to come! We are blessed in Paris with two guys that created those and continue their good job. They may not be the most easy ones to move your models on (like the one with the supertanker) and some of them have sometimes awful sneaky sniper nests but they force you to fully think about listbuilding and how to play it (the one with the wrecked plane is a nightmare for deployment and it is safer to begin than to choose deployment). But they have their share of amazing tables in Lyon too. But I understand why some of you come about camo spam as the way to go while I sometimes play on tables where a lone Aquila could become the king of the hill.

Coming back to the subject : I need to face the LX to fully understand his power but I still think that in LI scenarios, he his really powerful. And maybe should be hold back until the defensive net is less tight. So games against IA and Yu-Jing might require more vigilance through the three rounds than any other. Seeing this guy jump next an objective only hold by a Trauma-Doc on turn 3 might change the scoring a lot.

My assumption is you wouldn't deploy a linked Fusilier on its own. You'd combine the fire of the unit being targeted with other support, like a Decoy Helot.

With the Helots your chances improve a lot, but i was playing Limited Insertion, Helots are not the best choice for that kind of game.
Dont think no one will take a full Fusi link ever here, but a speare one in the combined link will be a common sight

@barakiel Caught your spot on White Noise, wondered what you thought on something like this as a mixed offense/defense list for stuff like Decap and Frontline where minimal specialists are desirable.

I like lists like this, but wouldn't a marker state Lt be a better choice than the kamau?

Pretty interesting. I've seen a lot of players asking specifically about Limited Insertion VIRD lists.

I think the list is fine, though I definitely agree a Zulu Cobra should be the LT. You don't want to be taking your LT into combat.

For Limited Insertion though, I'd be really tempted to put one of our TAGs to work. We have some really amazing TAG offerings, especially for missions where you don't need Specialists.

I was of the thought that the Zulus would be taking point early on, and be at just as much risk as the Kamau, but I take your point :D

I'm sticking to limited insertion for the time being because I'm a very slow painter and I only have about a month to get the army made, from scratch.

Alright so this weekend I have another tournament coming up – I'm not sure how large it will be but it's at my usual store with the usual guys, so it will be nice to see how Varuna will stack up in a controlled environment. The missions are: Supremacy, Acquisition, and Unmasking. 300 its, no extras. This will be a nice departure from limited insertion.

For my supremacy/acquisition list I've come up with this:
    Attack from the deep!
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]10
    KAMAU HMG / Pistol, Knife. (1 | 28)

ORC (Varuna Div.) (Multiterrain: Aquatic/Jungle, Stealth) Feuerbach / Pistol, Knife. (2 | 43)

    GROUP 2[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]3 [IMG]3
    ECHO-BRAVO Red Fury / Pistol, Knife. (1 | 25)
FUGAZI DRONBOT Flash Pulse, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 8)

A nice amount of orders, decent attack pieces and great defense. The ORC makes for a really good Xenotech/Dataracker piece, he's tough, has a decent ARO in the form of an explosive shot, and is relatively fast moving. one of the things I LOVE about Varuna is the confidence it gives me to say "I'll go second" even if I lose the initiative roll, just because of the immense amount of ARO they can bring to the table.

The next list I have is for Unmasking:

    I will reveal you

I kind of struggled with this one – I don't really like this mission all too much. There's a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it. The strategy here is to push forward with the Zulu KHDs to push buttons and kill targets with the link team HMG and the ORC, who once again makes a good data tracker. This list can also bring a lot of defense to the table, which is great because you need to protect your HVTs.

Let me know what you guys think, what you would change, or how you would approach these missions with Varuna! I'll probably do a write up here or in a battle report thread either Monday or Tuesday. thanks and have a great weekend everyone!

I think those are good lists.

    For List 1:
If it was me personally, I'd probably drop a Helot, a palbot, and the two Specialist upgrades on the Fusiliers to refund yourself 16 points. You can buy yourself two baggage bots for Group 2, and have that group be a bit more robust and self-sufficient.

    For List 2:
If you similarly drop some Fusilier upgrades, you can make a KHD ZC into a Croc FO. Having access to Hidden Deployment, mines and full TO are all pretty sweet, and you still get to keep the Deployable Repeaters that your Fusilier brings.

More drastically, you could trim some points and get yourself a Pathfinder. That's a PanO signature unit for useful unopposed button pushing... 6-4, combi is certainly enough to take down those Designated Targets, and provides all kinds of helpful support utility.

Your lists have great unit selection overall. I just really like having 15 Reg, especially when you have a lot of buttons to push.

    Thanks for the advice,

I sometimes run baggage bots but have found myself leaving them on the shelf more frequently lately, I find that they can crowd my deployment zone sometimes, especially on boards that are light on terrain.
I considered the Croc for unmasking, as he's pretty great at pushing those buttons and even gunfighting if need be, but ultimately reached for the Zulu because I felt as though I was wasting points on infiltration when theres an exclusion zone. Though you're right, he probably would bring a little bit more to the table than a second Zulu KHD.

I know you love the pathfinder, as he shows up in every list you write, haha, but without a regular hacker and with a sensor LT do you find his utility is somewhat hamstrung or already fulfilled by other pieces?

All the utility on the Pathfinder is great, but even if he didn't have a Combi, Repeater and Sniffers, I'd probably still use him as a 6-4 FO. There's a lot of order efficiency there, when your only goal is to score unopposed button pushes.

VIRD is actually the first time in a long time that I haven't regularly fielded the Pathfinder (shock, gasp right?) But for a mission as movement-intensive as unmasking, I'd really give it some consideration. It's also nice that you can drop Sniffers around, Sensor very safely from your DZ with the LT Order, and have those Sniffers continue to annoy the enemy throughout the game.

These are really good lists though, and I'd definitely steer new players to them as an example of lists that play to VIRD's strengths.

Had another pair of games last night, ran an oddball list against my regular Corregidor opponent and then had a great game against Bakunin with a more standard list.

Write ups once I get to work and fully wake up.

Capture and Protect vs Corregidor. He elects to go second so I deploy for maximum aggression. Montesa is the reserve piece and Datatracker, I use the Impetuous order to race out and challenge a Bandit. I get crit glued for my trouble, but luckily the Machinist is only 2 orders away from fixing him. The Kamau HMG cleans up a couple of models poking their heads out then the machinist fixes my Montesa. The Patsy Haris is really efficient for moving around a big gun and 2 specialists. My Zulu Spitfire is able to kill a couple more models not in total cover and then the turn passes. My opponent kills the Montesa and has a couple annoying Alguaciles covering my doctoring path. I spend most of my turn pulping Alguaciles and only fix the Montesa on the last 2 orders. I’m almost B2B with the beacon at this point but I don’t have enough orders to clear out the chaff - he’s out nearly his entire army overwatching that beacon. I elect to hide and wait for the final turn. Of course the Montesa doesn’t survive his active turn, some goon with a combi rolls a crit and the Montesa is soon off the table. My doctor makes a last ditch run for the beacon but is picked off just before she grabs it. I get a classified for a 4-3 win.

Overall thoughts: Helots were just the super annoying speed bumps they were designed to be. Didn’t mention them in the batrep but they drained my opponents orders like a sieve. Trying to discover and then clear them out took way too much investment and he was never able to make a serious run on my beacon.

As much as I love the Montesa he has difficulty taking on multiple models at the same time. My opponent played this to his advantage and I almost never had less than 3 models with AROs to the Montesa. I need to get better at playing s4 motorcycles.

Patsy Haris team was excellent as usual.

3 Zulus were all fantastic in doing what they do.

    More conventional list:

Comma Center vs Bakunin. He opts for second turn again. I deploy the link in my left corner and he deploys a Moderator sniper and a Moira sniper in the opposite corner. A camo token sticks in superior infiltration roll prone on a rooftop right in front of my DZ.

First order my pathfinder moves up and sensor sweeps the camo marker, it’s Bran del Castro! My SMR Zulu moves onto an adjoining rooftop and plugs Bran sending him to the great zoo in the sky. My Kamau heads up the link and moves up to see the Moira sniper, crits her but she passes the other save and merely falls unconscious... within 2 orders of a doctor bot. I cap some objectives and pass the turn. My opponent does quite a dance trying to extricate his Moderator link from the gaze of my Helots without getting an LRL template dropped on his doctor bot. His Lunokhod draws the first ARO from my LRL Helot tanking 4 fire saves and splashing a shotgun onto a Decoy (that turns out to be fake anyways). The Helot catches a mine from a Zero and dies in a burst of shrapnel. The Moderator is now freed up and moves to get a shot on the Kamau. We both agreed it was his best shot of taking on the Kamau - 3 dice on 10s vs 2 on 16s is still terrible. Nevertheless dice happen and my 1 and 4 are cancelled, the Kamau fails all 4 saves and evaporates. My SMR Helot also shot at the sniper during this exchange and landed all 3 shots, killing the Moderator and breaking the link. Still a trade in my opponents favor. He revived the Moira and passed the turn.

With the Moira back up and locking down the entire board (including both places my EB could come in) I have to go in on a stupid plan. My Jammer Zulu moves to find LoS to the Moira who opts to hold instead of discovering. I triangulated fire from 47 7/8” away landing all 3 combi shots! The Moira fails her saves and is off the board. Sigh of relief. I start cleanup on objectives (now have capped 4) and completely forget about killing the designated target. My opponent finally lets his Morlocks off their leashes and they get trounced by the ORC Feuerbach. He’s able to start reversing the objective slide and kills my SMR Zulu. I need to cap some objectives so I bring on the Echo Bravo! Squaring off against a Zero E/Mauler he lands some shotguns but the Zero makes them armor rolls. A Morlock throws smoke which blocks off a lot of his other AROs. I kill the Zero, send off the WildParrot to lock down a Morlock and 2 camo tokens, and cap another objective. Move to the last objective, fail the WIP roll and run out of orders. Pathfinder is 1 order short of making it to the objective so we end up tied on objectives. During his Impetuous phase then wildparrot goes off and isolates his Prowler Spitfire, Zero KHD and his Morlock. He’s able to grab one objective putting him in the lead, his Zero AHD kills my Designated Target and he gets a Mapping and Coup de Grace classified for an undignified 0-9 loss for Varuna.

Thoughts: Defensive link is serious business. When “roll dice and hope for crits” is your only solution you know it’s bad.

Triangulated Fire is a goddamn hero. Just another tool in the arsenal.

Helots once again prove that they are way scarier than their 22 points suggests. My opponent sunk way too many models and orders into killing my 2 roadblocks.

Echo Bravo finally did right by me. Objective snaggin’, WildParrot placin’, rootin’ tootin’ shotgun shootin’ hero.

I probably need to start playing without the Helot crutch.

I have a lot of events coming up that require a decent aggressive Datatracker, so I'm starting to play around with ORCs in my lists.

This one did a good job yesterday vs TJC. 5-man link with ORC and Kamau HMG rolled up to the midfield, shot up two Hollowmen, then dropped the ORC off in Suppressive Fire in the midfield, retreating to give the Sniper 5-man link bonuses. A very nice little foray done in 7 Orders.

After that the Zulu Cobra Jammer did very well with his Triangulated Fire Assault Pistol, threatening Perseus and Mary Problems, and camping in high-traffic areas where the jammer could project an annoying threat. He survived to the end of the game after notching up a high body count, which is pretty rare.

Kamau MSV2 did her usual quality work, crit a bunny hopping Hollowman Spitfire in the face with a 19, then overwatched the field for the rest of the game.

Echo Bravo made a modest contribution, scoring a Classified and throwing out his Parrot to help E/M the last remnant of the Hollowmen team.

Helots did just fine. Decoy was valuable, but once attrition starts to take hold and your enemy starts running low on orders and troops, the limited camo is definitely better. Decoy lets you populate your DZ with defense and keep the enemy at bay while they're at their strongest. But once you need to start aggressively controlling the midfield, moving up near objectives and locking lanes, the Limited Camo is dominant with its 360 LoF, marker state, and not breaking when you actually use the Helot's order to do anything.

    I'll keep experimenting with both.[IMG]

@barakiel I’ve been running the LRL as Limited Camo and the SMR as Decoy for my initial testing. My reasoning is that the LRL is better when your opponent doesn’t know it’s there (or at least doesn’t know for sure). Having to respect every camo token as a potential fire template is a whole different game than respecting decoys.

I really want to try the Red Fury and MSR profiles at some point - the MSR has such a steep SWC cost that I’m 95% certain it’s not an ideal choice, but I’ll give it a fair shake to be certain. That’s an excellent candidate for Limited Camo mostly so you don’t give away the equipment. Since the other 3 profiles are all ranged at <24” people might try to engage in the MSR’s preferred rangebands thinking they will catch you at bad dice.

I really like how all 4 profiles are so radically different in how you approach them and how you deal with them. I’ve been using SMR and LRL profiles exclusively so my regular opponents are starting to catch on (as is the community at large I believe, thanks to the Internet Hive Mind believing those two are the best profiles) so I’m feeling that a surprise weapon change up if I have the SWC to spare could really be interesting.
