In fairness I too loved the Islay nectar long before I watched the show. But no sane man can question the truth of the Swanson Pyramid.

    Bruichladdich or bust.

    Well i like it here.
Lot of fun and grown people around here, not like the skull companies dedicated forums (except B&C cool mature people over there too)

But i think you all missed the important part.
The question is not what drink, its where is my drink and why is it not in a bigger glass.

And here we see another man of culture in this forum.

I would recommend William Lawsons stuff for the great PanO vs. Scots ad.

Welp, the November update is just a PanO tweak (whatever that inquires). So dash your hopes and dreams YJ, Ariadna, Haqq, Tohaa, Nomad, and CA players. You aren't getting anything. Aleph is in a odd boat with OperationS so we'll see if any changes come to old Vedic units when it finally drops.

Hopefully something more comprehensive comes down the line. Waiting 4 years for another book to bring the old sectorials/units up to snuff isn't going to cut it anymore if this is how CB is going to roll out new stuff.

So a current grievance of mine keeps on giving.

IJW in one of the other threads. Coming from him it is about official-ish as it comes.

    Likewise; great choice.

This thread has been so successful, I think we should have a sub forum of our own and in the event of any serious argument (he said, exasperated by yet another exhausting round of PBI bollocks...) members would have agree to special means of arbitration.

The two players at odds would have to meet to play a game together, and each would be required bring their army AND a bottle of their favourite single to be shared with their opponent. Can I get an 'amen'?

So I went to visit some friends the weekend before last and they took me to a speakeasy. They were out of Chivas, so I ordered a Gentleman Jack.

    Eugh :confounded:

That's what I get for going cheap when in doubt

A friend of mine ONLY drinks "cheap Scotch" when he's feeling the need to punish himself (he grew up Catholic, some habits are hard to break, I suppose).

For me, life is too short to drink bad booze. It's why I avoid the bourbons (even the good ones make me hurl). A good smooth irish will do me.

    Words of truth.

Note that for some applications booze doesn't need to be expensive to be good enough: for quite a while my hip flask contained inexpensive Pliska (a Bulgarian brandy. Bulgaria has a long winemaking tradition, and because of that, they do make nice brandy too. But this particular one wasn't high end!). Under field conditions, when about a teaspoon of it was used to give the coffee or tea the extra kick on a cold day - it was exactly what the doctor ordered. The aroma, the taste and the knowledge what went into the mug had an excellent effect on team's morale.
A swig of it - if the circumstances permitted and required one - did its job too.

Now, I wouldn't be drinking Pliska like I drink my rum (I'm not a fan of brandy in general), but out in the woods - it was just right.

While Whisk(e)y is fair and good, I can't stomach JB, JD and most of the mainstream stuff. There is a faint taste of soap I can't ignore, maybe because I drank too much of it earlier in life (was fine drinking pretty much anything 10 years ago). Probably for the same reason putting Coke in a drink appears to be borderline blasphemy to me.

Nowadays sticking to my Hendricks, Grey Goose or the occasional Chivas.
At some point I aquired a special place in my heart for Bloody Mary - wouldn't believe how much you can get wrong there until you tried them in 5 different places.

When it comes to the whiskey things ... bourbon was good for one thing, removing permanent marker from whiteboards (when they still used xylene as the solvent carrier.).
Xylene is great stuff - about the only thing that will take polyurethane varnish off timber - a shame you can't get it here anymore.

There's an eternal conversation about Islay malts? But Lagavulin is by far the best it's just so bloody expensive. Ardbeg is the only whisky I've ever had that gives me heart burn which is tragic as I love it. In fact, if it comes out of Islay it's generally more than acceptable to me.
I also agree with Section 9, Japanese whiskys are lush, just also fooking expensive.

Lagavulin is just hands down the best for me, Laphroaig and Jura come in around the same, but these days I tend to also have a fair quantity of speysides. Can confirm Japanese whisky is also very good.

Everyday is Laphroaig either Quarter Cask or 10.

Ardbeg 10 or An Oa when more peat is desired.

Lagavulin 16 when a more rounded character, the 8 when I want more bite.

Talisker for a heavier brine/lighter smoke.

    Highland Park for fun

Springbank when I want to fight!

Not in Japan, mate! It’s all cheap as a second-rate blend over here.

Curiously, the Scottish sinlges are comparably cheap. Maybe this (lack of reasonably higher pricing) for imports is an outworking of the samurai tradition: find a worthy opponent and prove yourself the better distiller?
