This is about having certain troops for certain missions. Some troops are just better than others the same as some armies are better than others. I think this can help with beginners trying to make lists and can apply to both Vanilla and Sectoral as well. Just ignore troops that don’t apply to you. Also, i'm only doing what I think is the best for the job. Almost any troop can do some things but this job is what they are made for.

Note I'll be adding as I can and please remind me of anything I've forgotten.

Edit: 2/17 Add spoilers as suggested by @Joametz to make it neat.

In this mission you need to take and hold a center tech-coffin objective (does not need to be a specialist), preferably with Data Tracker and/or Liaison Officer, and flip switches on two antennas on either side (Hacker and Engineer get +3) and keep them that way.

*Good Data Tracker. # good Liaison Officer.

Optimal troops: Midfield specialists, especially Engineer and Hackers.
    Daofei
    Kanren
    Guilang#
    Su Jian*
    Zhencha#
    Mowang*

Sub-optimal: Good but not as good as the above. Some may be able to take, but not hold, etc.
    Daoying
    Hulang
    John Hawkood
    Lei Gong
    Liu Xing
    Ninja
    Sophotects
    Sun Tze*
    Tai Sheng*#
    Tiger Soldier

Support Troops: Not specialist but can help the above and can take the objective in a pinch. Any long-range fire support that can see the objective and keep the enemy away.

    Annihilation
    Added 2/14
This mission is all about killing the enemy and keeping your own alive. No specialists needed for the mission, but a Doctor and Engineer are good for keeping troops up. Bonus for killing the enemy Data Tracker.

This mission is the most subjective, meaning it’s what you think will be the best for you.

    *Good Data Tracker

Optimal troops: I tend to think optimal troops are ones that can both take out the enemy and survive. Multi-wounds, high BS and/or CC.

    Su Jian*
    Tai Sheng
    Wild Bill
    Wu Ming
    Zhanshi Yiseng
    Zuyong* (* the automedkit)

Sub-optimal troops: Again, this is a bit subjective. I think of them as good Attackers OR Defenders but not both.
    Guijia*
    Husong
    Rui Shi
    Shaolin
    Sun Tze*
    Tiger Soldier

    Biotechvore
    Added 2/14
This is like Annihilation+, kill as much as you can but you need to move out of the biotechvore zones or it can kill your own. Also, you need to complete classified objectives. Infiltrating must make a roll at -3 to place and Combat jumping troops are at a -3 on PH rolls. Remotes also suffer a bit more.
Speed, High BTS and multiple wounds will be a great help. A variety of specialists are good too.

    Optimal troops:
    Crane
    Hac Tao
    Hsien
    John Hawkwood
    Mowang
    Qaing Gao
    Sophotech
    Su Jian
    Tai Sheng

    Sub-Optimal:

    Liu Xing
    Lu Duan
    Rui Shi
    Shang Ji
    Sun Tze

    Capture & Protect
    Added 2/17
Essentially, capture the flag. Another mission that requires a good Attack to get the other teams beacon and Defend yours. There’s only one classified and no HVT used, so I don’t think having specialists are going to be important for other than if you want to keep things alive (Doc, Med, Eng), or to take Remotes (Hacker).

    # Possible Data Tracker (Not going to say good). Unfortunately camo troops in markers state can’t be it and Jump troops can’t. This is a case where you might want to “hand it off” to the Data Tracker after taking it with someone else.

Attack: Speed, Infiltration, and Combat Jump are good things to have for this.

    Optimal troops:
    Daofei
    Garuda
    Guilang
    Hawkwood#
    Hulang#
    Kanren
    Lei Gong#
    Liu Xing
    Mowang#
    Ninja
    Sophotech#
    Su Jian#
    Tiger Soldier
    Wild Bill
    Zhencha

    Sub Optimal troops:
    Cube Jagger
    Dakini
    Husong
    Lu Duan
    Rui Shi
    Weibing

Defense: Troops that have visual modifiers (give or take away), mines, madtraps and other things that make it difficult for the opponent to get to your beacon.

    Optimal troops:
    Bao
    Crane
    Daoying
    Hac Tao
    Hsien
    Husong
    Kanren
    Liberto
    Monstrucker
    Mowang

    Xi Zhuang
    Yan Huo

    Sub-optimal:

    Authorized Bounty Hunter
    Celestial Guard
    Kuang Shi
    Wu Ming (with mines)
    Zhanshi

    Counter Measures
    Added 2/17
Specialists. This one is about covering all contingencies. You don’t know what may come up with this but it’s mitigated a bit by being able to take a card out and re-draw. In Yu Jing there’s a few that are a few that can accomplish many of the missions that need to be done. This mission has an Exclusion Zone! No infiltrating or combat jumping into that zone. Speed and the ability to move around is going to help a little more than infiltrating or combat jumping but both still very useful.

Note: Remember, characters count as Veterans.

    * Possible Data Trackers

    Optimum troops:
    John Hawkwood*
    Krit Kokram*
    Lei Gong
    Sophotech*
    Tai Sheng*
    Xi Zhuan
    Zhencha

    Sub-optimum troops:

    Tiger Soldier

    Decapitation
    Added 2/18
Kill! Kill! Kill! Pretty much sums it up. Kill more pts., Lt., Designated Target, extra with your Datatracker. No specialists needed but I’d recommend a Doctor. This is a little less subjective than Annihilation due to having some specific targets. You want guys that can take out camo Lt. or good armor/multi-wound Lt.. MSV and Monofilament can be very useful. It’s unlikely that an opponent will be aggressive with their Lt. and will try to hide him away and defend it.

This one I’m splitting up into Attackers, Defenders and Lt.

*The Datatracker only needs to kill the Designated Target for extra points.

Attackers: I like troops that start a bit closer to the opponent and may have camo of some sort.

Another “Killy” mission. Kill more army points, Lts., Datatracker, and if you have time, find some fun stuff in the Panoplies. Then 2 classified objectives. This is pretty much a copy-paste of the Decapitation. The only real differences are that you don’t know the Lt., kill the Datatracker instead of target and a few panoplies that anyone can do. Note all Combat Jump troops get a +3 to PH due to the Landing Zone. Cumulative with an EVO remote or Hacking assist. Again, a Doctor or Engineer are probably good to take too keep troops alive but also for classifies.

Again, this one I’m splitting up into Attackers, Defenders and Lt.

*In this mission the Datatracker needs to be killed rather than doing the Killing.

Attackers: I like troops that start a bit closer to the opponent and may have camo of some sort.

    Frontline
    Added 2/19
Move! Move! Move! Get into zones between the deployment areas and get more points the further away. There’s 1 classified objective. Having a Liaison Officer in the Central zone is extra points.

Again I’m splitting them in Attackers and Defenders but some might be in both!

    *Good Liaison Officer

Attack: Infiltrators are fantastic for already being in scoring spots or taking a couple steps and being in another. Hidden deployment is even better. You can have troops stay hidden until the last turn and then show up for points. Drop troops are also fantastic for showing up at the last moment.

    Hunting Party
    Added 2/20/20
In this mission you want to “hunt” down the Lt. (open info) and specialists. There are two Antennas to connect, that can only be done by a specialist, and two classified objectives. They are point each so you could gamble by not having specialists and try to get all of the other points.

Note: Hunting means Isolate or Immobilized. NOT dead. Leave the shock ammo at home. Veterans, Elites, and HQ troops get a free ADHL. Everyone gets Stun ammo for their pistols. Multi weapons also get stun ammo. Stun doesn’t count for pts but it doesn’t accidently kill the target.

Hunters: Obviously those that get an ADHL but also may start up the board or combat jump and MSV and X-Visor. Flash pulse is also good in a pinch.

Note: When you use the panoplies, you can choose to take D-charges instead of what is rolled. It can also cancel the unloaded state (great for madtraps!)

Note: Saturation zone in the middle and weird deployment.

Attackers: Infiltrators, Forward Deployment and Combat Jump is really useful. Especially with the different deployment. Specialists for the Antennas and non for the Consoles.

One of the simplest missions. Take and control quarters. Points are totaled after each game round. Only 1 classified objective. It would be good to take Doctors and Engineers to keep your guys alive to hold quarters. Baggage bots are very useful!

    *Possible Datatrackers.

Note: There are Panoplies on either side of the Antenna but there’s no points for using them. However they can still be useful and refilling weapons and equipment can can hurt a TAG. Like: Madtraps, DEP, Panzerfaust, D-Charges, etc.

    The Armory
    Added 2/25
Get in the armory to get points each round and at the end of the game. Points for raiding the Panoplies more than the enemy. One classified. Specialists have advantages using the Panoplies.

Note: Exclusion zone. Infiltrators are not going to have advantages. Size 5 HI can go prone and crawl into the Armory.

Takers and holders: Essentially anything that can get in there and weather the storm after. HI, NWI, is going to be good. Even if hacked they will count for points. But some can take but not hold it but are cheap enough to not worry about loosing. Large and multi templates are very useful.

Dominate transmission areas by having more points near each one. Kill the Designated Target. Extra points if killed with Data Tracker. One classified objective. In this mission there are 5 transmission antennas. 2 on either side and one in the middle.

Note: Transmission antennas are also repeaters for both sides! This might be a better mission for the Yu Jing “Little Brothers” to take over. But if you do want HI, high BTS and maybe a Tinbot is recommended. Also Engineer to fix anything immobilized is good.

Forward takers: The guys that go for the antennas in the enemies half of the table and the middle antenna. They need to be able take it and hold it. HI and REMs can be hacked but at most they are Immobilized. They will still count for points in the area if they are not killed.

Activate (3) consoles (Specialists. Hackers +3). Can’t find DT without activating a console first.
    Keep Data Tracker alive.

Note: Exclusion Zone. Speed might be wanted over infiltration but it can still get you closer to objectives than the rest.

I’ve split this by Console takers and Designated Target killers. Some can be both.

    *Possible Data Tracker

    Console takers
    Daofei
    Daoying
    Guilang
    Hulang*
    John Hawkwood*
    Kanren*
    Lei Gong*
    Liu Xing
    Ninja
    Sophotech*
    Tiger Soldier*
    Zhencha

Designated Target killers: They can go after the DT and Decoys once the console has been hacked. They have speed to get to them to the target or have things like Light grenade launchers that can kill it without even seeing the target. Jump troops can still come on from sides outsize the zone. Also they can still land outside too.
    Celestial Guard
    Cube Jagger
    Dakini*
    Hulang*
    Husong
    Garuda
    Kanren*
    Lei Gong*
    Liu Xing
    Lu Duan
    Ninja
    Rui Shi
    Sophotech*
    Su-Jian*
    Tiger Soldier
    Weibing
    Wild Bill
    Wu Ming*
    Zhanshi

Good stuff, this is a handy checklist to compare against before committing to an army list.

For Acquisition, I suppose you refer to the hacker loadout of Daofei? Or do you pick him mostly for his staying power?

Thanks. i was hoping for that.

Both for the most part. It depends on you but I like the AHD for pushing the buttons but the Spitfire is excellent for taking and holding the center.

Could you explain your reasoning behind marking camouflage models as good Datatrackers? As for the Zuyong Automedikit, I don't trust nor like 60% do-or-lose single dice rolls :(

Remember that Daoying tends to anchor one of your home zones by virtue of being a MI with camo in this season, thanks to free FD1. Something similar is also going on with a Su-Jian, since at 54+ and a strong ability to get into a position your opponent simply can't attack, the Su-Jian is very good at "defending" quarters simply by virtue of weight of points.

I also said OR Liaison Officer. Personally, i wouldn't use a Camo troop for Data Tracker. Some may feel that's it's an ok trade off. However I did forget that the Liaison Officer needs to be an FO. So I took that off the Daofei. I separated them out a bit more with *DT #LO.

Which mission are you talking about? Daoying is fantastic for many reasons. It's great for already being in a good scoring position but camo makes it even better.

Added Su Jian to Acquisition. He's fantastic for getting to a spot and really good at holding it.

1st paragraph: Right, sorry, seems the first time I read it you only had camo troops marked is all :)
2nd paragraph: Basically anything with control quarters, Supremacy in this case where you've it marked as sub-optimal. Not that I'd take full AVA unless I wanna play 9-camo IA... but those missions are good candidates to place the Daoying LT unusually aggressively as a "defensive" measure. I do note that the Daoying BSG is a lot better than say.. Zhanying in the same price range at playing defensive. Been meaning to test that one as a defensive piece for staving off DZ aggression, but haven't got around to playing IA of late.

By the by, Husong are brilliant in Biotechvore! They're strong enough to stick their heads out in ARO and tend to cost your opponent a bunch of orders which can be absolutely deadly in BTV. It does increase your CT expenditure in turn 1, as you really don't want them taking DT hits, but particularly if playing IA you should be able to bring 3 of them and have plenty of orders to move the Core out of the zone as well as plonking off ARO pieces while doing so.

Also, an old wisdom for BTV was that Sun Tze is excellent for this mission. He's got very high BTS, adds his LT order to the pool, and gives you an extra command token to move stuff out. Since he's got effectively 3 wounds, he can tank the zone for two turns even if your dice hates your guts.

This is a good topic, but I think it should be organised with one thread per mission. This allows for a more focused discussion and example lists.
As for Aquisition, I'd highly recommend to put SunTze on the list. The most durable Datatracker in the game imho.

I have a proposal for the organization of the thread: why not use spoilers for each mission?

This! It helps keep posts neat and tidy

I have some thoughts regarding the troops themselves, if you're listening to suggestions:

I believe cost-effective killers are superb here. Rui Shi, Libertos and Tigers have worked wonders for me in the past, and I think they're optimal. I would also recommend the inclusion of a medic, since any troop that is not in a Null state (or Dead) at the end of the game will help balance the points in your favor.

The Daoying is amazing here, since it deploys inside a quadrant and you can take a hacking profile. Also, I believe the inclusion of a Ninja is almost mandatory if you can take it, particulary the KHD profile.

    Good thread, m8!

    Edit: grammar.

1st: I did but I edited it due your comments. I wasn't clear on difference between Data Tracker and Liaison Officer.
2nd: It's all a bit subjective but Sub-optimal is not "bad". It can still be very good.

I wanted this threat to be very high level. Not getting into the nitty gritty of each mission. It's a general overview for beginners.

I'll try the spoiler thing. I haven't done it in a while.

Annihilation is one of the most subjective missions for list building. Some things are fantastic by themselves and some may need teamwork.

Sub-optimal is not "bad" it's still very good. I'll put the Ninja in there but sub optimal because i've found MSV2 and better KHD can ruin his day pretty well. I feel the only thing it has going for him is he's cheap.

    I've added a few more.

I'm surprised how many times Hawkwood has made it into lists. He's really good compared to other troops in the same price range.

Good idea, this may be helpful even for more experienced players - scan over the suggestions and find a almost forgotten unit here and there ;-)

    At Supremacy something is missing:

Haidaos main role is defending here, at best in a link, but even in vanilla he could be a resilent ARO piece that can still hold a zone. Not overstrech him, he need to dive to cover as soon as he is in NWI, heal him back with CTs in the backhand.

I'm sure I have and that's what I've got you for! lol

I added the Haidao. I agree on this a lot. Especially the Engineer is good keeping your remotes up and going.

    I added Firefight too.

Frontline needs a Liason Officer - apart from his normal job, he generates extra SP while holding the middle zone.

I think Guilang and Zencha are good choices. You give away whats under the camo, but you still can deploy in camo.

    Done!

    Added Transmission Matrix and Unmasking.

Things I learned by doing this.
Some troops I never thought of using appeared to me as being really good for certain missions. I feel Transmission Matrix was made for the Shang Ji. He has the pts to dominate, High ARM, BTS, good WIP, a Tinbot B. Flamethrower is great for anything trying to grab cover on objectives. Etc.

Yu Jing has some great infiltrators and troops that can do many jobs. The Daofei showed up a lot. Amazingly John Hawkwood too. I'm more likely to take him over a Hulang but there are others that can do the same.

I really want to play Sun Tze. He can be fantastic for some missions.

I hope guys like it and it was a good exercise for me.
