If any games company solely relied on my patronage, then they'd be better off declaring bankruptcy now and finding a better business model. I don't buy enough to keep a garage operator from having to have a real job to pay the bills (but as I've been a prop and model maker in a pro FX shop, I have the skills to scratch build a lot of stuff I need - like terrain and certain kinds of models. Most gamers are not me.)
A friend of mine is pretty WG intensive* (he made some of their french translation) which lead most of the group into it too (also because we're individually interested by those games). I already have the rule book and if I dive into it I may go full Virai (or Vir-AI as my friend says). The only thing about BtGoA is that you really need to involve yourself into if you want to enjoy it. *he's the first to own every factions complete, fully assembled and painted You summarized it pretty well, indeed. I like the idea to scrap-build thing but I lack some skills to do it myself. I'm trying to go this way with basing, maybe I could expand to terrain later.
Point taken. I'll remember that. That is a great amount of commitment & like for the models & the game. I also currently lack scratch-building skills but I still keep trying.
From the creator of the game : "I took the Bolt Action system and overly complicate it. Maybe too much"* *not the exact quote but you've got the idea
Heh. Meanwhile, I gave in decided to increase my own pile of shame by buying most of the Yu Jing minis. I just can't resist them... I don't identify with this faction that much, but I like them being so strongly on the heavy armour side. Quite a change when compared to my Haqqs... Anyway, now I need to sell some of my Nomads, because I have no money or shelf space left!
I hope someone buys them off of you. Considering Invincible Army is right around the corner, it is a great time to be a HI infantry lover. Especially if you like the models that Yu jIng provides.
I don't feel much conviction there, or am I just paranoid? No no no, not listening, not buying anything else! I'm perfectly satisfied with the YJs I own / ordered. And no more mini purchases in general! The pile of shame must not increase any further!
Since I moved I have to add about 40% on to the cost of minis due to shipping and customs duty, this has reigned in my impulse buying of Infinity and miniatures in general. Of course this means I went a bit mad at Gen Con, especially as in real terms I have more disposable income than I ever did living in the UK.
Yeah, that's my problem, right? Between assembling minis (both for Infinity and for Dragon Rampant), assembling buildings, painting scenery pieces (both Infinity and fantasy ones), I... somehow end up not having time to paint the minis. The last thing I did was creating custom bases for my already-painted Aleph minis (because I want to play them - and I want to varnish them before I start using them, so I needed have them completely finished). The most frustrating thing? Between all this assembling, painting etc., I actually end up not having the time for the actual game. Ugh. Sometimes I feel like I'll be ready the play only when everyone else gets bored with the game and move to other things...
It is my feeling that you will sell them in due time. So take that with confidence. We'll see as the models, units & sectorial are shown off.
YJ Invicible was the first mini I painted when I decided to give it a try 3-4 years ago and I choose it for both being so nice/cool and having an armour (so no face painting). A lot of Infinity factions have design I like but I'll stick to them. I have Haqq too because of the Red Veil box so I will get some like here in opportunity mode (except for the Maghariba, it's such a beauty I couldn't resist). Yep, it could be a really fun killer. That's part of why I tend to stick to brick and mortar when possible (even when I can save a few bucks with online order). I'm actually doing some progress as I ended with something like 200 minis in 2018 (a massive improvement on my painting rate). But most of them didn't require assembly, which is a real time saver. My actual projects are: - ending the 59 Massive Darkness minis (40h estimated) - the continuous Blood Red Skies project (which is something that just flow) - then I could come back to Infinity's minis that deserve more time spent on individual pieces. The end of the list is filled with Deadzone/Warpath boxes that wont be touched until next year. There is also a few "in between" projects that may be done when I'll feel I have to do it, as: - "It's only a Flesh Wound" diorama (Warlord Anniversary). I made one last year as a gift for a friend, now I should do mine - Two TARDIS, one for me, one as a gift - some Dreadball minis (a couple of teams, cheerleaders, coaches...) - GKR's Mechs (the 4 from the painter's edition, the 4 mercs and Big Little Buddy)
@Koin-Koin Quite the large list you have there. I hope you will be able to complete them all in due time.
Actually I'm more at ease with the list since the Massive Darkness project is going pretty well. I'm using it as both a motivation and a learning project and it's providing really good results. I've tried some products I never used before as the Army Painters shades (I prefer to call them inks) and the QuickShade dip method too. I also tried to apply some methods/constrains to try to "optimise" the time I spent on it. I've learned a lot with it, I highly recommend to try similar approaches to people who want to increase their painting rate (potentially their skills too).
The tricky part now will be to transfer those to Infinity's painting style. Finding balance between speed and a more elaborate paintjob will be the key.
Very much so. It's been so long since I've painted that I've had to drop all the way back to GW models for things I don't need to go all OCD on like Infinity minis! (Though I ended up deciding to paint my Tau like Napoleonic French troops, gray trousers, white chest with blue jackets, red cuffs... What the hell was I thinking?!?)
Dunno. But only keeping my pokemonitis in check stopped me from buying MRRF and painting them inspired with WW1 French Army: red trousers and blue jackets.
