Starting QK- how to begin?

FOs aren't all that reliable, but can certainly work. Also, look up Rafiq's Sat-Lock with Kameel EVO support.

REMs have generally two sizes: S3 (Rafiq/Shihab/Shaytaniyah/Fanous) use 40mm base, while S4 (Kameels) use 55mm. Technically Nasmats are also REMs, but they're S1 so they use standard 25mm base.

 

There's also a program on standard & Assault Hacking Devices, Spotlight (Claw-1 program class) that can mark targets.
Worth keeping in mind (though setting up a Repeater network for that end isn't too easy in QK).

I'd say, if you want to use a SML effectively, you have to build a list for that purpose. One FO is not nearly enough (because once he goes down, your entire SML-based plan goes down). Two I would consider a bare minimum, three or four should do it (still, that might mean classic FO, Hackers capable of running Spotlight, and Rafiq REMs).

 

They are fairly inefficient though, as far as I can tell. And more straightforward ways of doing so are already fairly situational, it seems.

 

Well, if I had a Hacker in Repeater range of a target, and had to spend a number of Orders trying to get a Rafiq into position, and having to put a FO into ARO risk, I guess I'd try the Spotlight, and hope for a lucky outcome on the dice.

But in general, you're right: no method of targetting is really cost-efficient.
Which makes SMLs such a rare sight...
