I'd say stick to the Mk12s. Ikari isn't exactly brimming with specialists, so a tough, sturdy FO like the Karakuri is very useful in my eyes.
For some reason I forget that they are FOs too! You are right about that. They are great specialists. I love putting the MK12 into suppression fire!
If you are playing a lot of smoke I think the Heavy Shotgun has potential as an armor cracker. But I can see the MK12 being more well rounded profile.
