I will be getting the new Patchers at some yet to be determined point in the future right now. Kosmoflot itself is not very high on my priority list of armies I need to paint, unless it is a CodeOne model.

    Thank you!

After taking a break from painting for a good few months, I think I am ready to get back in the saddle. Here is my work for Pavel Aleksei McMannus. Painting characters tends to be more challenging than usual for me because there is already a particular identity that belongs to the character, so I don’t have as much leeway to paint as I’d like. Furthermore, when I first started painting him, I was far away from my desk, having brought some miniatures on vacation with me to paint in my free time. Unfortunately, the conditions at that time were not good for painting, as I was outside in hot weather, which caused my paint to dry too quickly and almost ruined my work. I was forced to give up. Months later, I decided that I was ready to try again, this time in the comfort of my own apartment. This time, I was much more successful.

As for how he plays, I haven’t really figured out how he’s supposed to be used. On its face, his profile looks like a contradictory mess of skills that that don’t play well together; I can play him as a long range marksman and let his formidable close combat abilities go unused, or charge the enemy and put him in a position where his ohotnik isn’t very useful. I almost wrote him off as a badly made profile, but then I got the idea that maybe I need to use him as an assassin whose job is to hunt down and eliminate a single target, and then turn him loose on Frenzy/Impetuous as I switch my focus to other units. Maybe he’ll make it out alive, and maybe he won’t. We’ll see if that’s a good strategy for him.

Finishing out the S2-sized TAK miniatures are the Irmandinhos. Since they are an irregular unit, I decided to give them a different paint job than the rest of my regular TAK. I settled on giving them a color scheme heavily inspired by the Bandit faction from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., largely because like the bandits, the Irmandinhos are scoundrels. While I am happy with how the paint job turned out, they ended up with a more tactical appearance that I had intended. Oh well, they still look good to me.

I have heard nothing but good things about how they play on the tabletop, but I have barely played with them. That is mostly because by the time I got my hands on the models, I didn’t have the free time needed to organize a game day and test them out. Unfortunately for them, though, I also am very hesitant to take any irregular troops with me due to the current 15-order cap, and the one irregular slot I am willing to give tends to go to Dog-Warriors. But maybe the Irmandinhos will end up earning a spot in my lists.

@Scribbler Wow, your work is always impressive. Makes drab colors & camo eye-catching.

I’m coming really close to finishing my TAK. But as most would be able to tell instantly, this miniature is not a Cossack. This is because I ran out of Stirland Mud, which I need for my Spring Snowstorm bases, so I decided to paint something else instead, and I chose the Kunai Solutions ninja. I chose him because his pose is really cool, and he is also available in CodeOne, so that’s one more painted model to use when introducing new players.

Sadly, I’m not sure what to think about this paint job. While I think the concept is sound, it is dominated by colors that are difficult to work with, and they absolutely hate Nuln Oil washes. These pictures do not show how messily the wash came out, so he truly looks better on camera than in person. However, I still think the paint job came out as acceptable, but not great. Next time I am buying paint, I think I’m going to see if they have a lighter gray wash that will hopefully work better with Celestia Grey. I also tried painting his Shock CCW as a green power sword, which I am pretty new to. Luckily, I think it turned out pretty decent, although I would have liked to be able to see the Ironbreaker highlights just a little more under the glaze.

Right now, I can only speculate how good he is on the tabletop because he isn’t available to any of the armies that I play. However, looking at his profile, I think his role is a dedicated midfield anti-skirmisher because of his ability to quickly climb walls and his weaponry. His Shock marksman rifle gives him good range out to 24”, and both his rifle and Shock CCW inflict shock on their targets, making him quite lethal to 1W, non-Shock immune troops. However, HI aren’t particularly threatened by him. Unsurprisingly, he does have Mimetism (-6), camouflage, and Hidden Deployment, so he can be used as an ambush unit as well.

You seem to have done a good job on painting something out of the ordinary of your usual scope. Congrats on your success. Hope you are able to get more Stirland Mud easily and quickly in your area or online. So you can power on through those last bit of Araidna troops you have left to paint.

Looking good. White is hard to paint but I like how you did it :)

Here is my capstone of sorts to my Cossack army. The Dynamos are the last regular troop profile for TAK, and all that is left is a few mercenary units. So, I’m feeling pretty accomplished with having painted my TAK!

Before I began the Dynamos, I was given some really helpful advice on how to paint better. That advice being, “thin your paints,” but stated in a helpful, non-condescending manner. The trick to it that I hadn’t known before was that, when thinning paint, you don’t need to drown your paintbrush in water; just a quick dip will do. So, I tried it, and I am very pleased with the outcome. I think this paint job looks cleaner and crisper than my previous work. The only thing I wish I did differently was to figure out how to more effectively break up the sea of Castilian Green that dominates most of the models. I tried to do so by using some Nurgling Green, but I don’t think I used enough on the storage compartments of the motorcycles. Still, I am pleased with how the Dynamos turned out, keeping with my theme of taking inspiration from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and painting them to look like the military stalkers.

I tend not to use motorcycle units a lot on the tabletop, so I’ve never played with the Dynamos. I don’t think I can say much about how they play besides I expect them to play similar to the Mavericks, which I am still learning how to use. But the Dynamos profiles look pretty good for what they are.

Here is a classic Ariadna unit. The old sculpt of the Chasseur came with the second edition Ariadna starter pack, and was part of my first set of miniatures. That old chasseur was quite the workhorse for my troops, and his retirement was well-earned. Now it’s time for the new guy to step up, and I think he can’t wait to get started.

Since the Chasseur is a unit belonging to the French faction of Ariadna, a new color scheme was fitting. I decided to continue my theme of taking inspiration from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and gave him a winter camouflage pattern reminiscent of Monolith. This time, I think my white/light gray-dominated paint job turned out much better than my Kunai because I used a light gray wash (Soulblight Grey) instead of Nuln Oil. The only problem that I encountered with Soulblight Grey is that it can produce a Sugar Glaze of Doom effect, which I think I can be resolved by simply changing the order in which I apply the wash, because I applied a wash to his gear before his uniform. As a result, washing his uniform was trickier than usual, so I should have done that first. But now I know so I can avoid that problem for the rest of my Merovingian units.

Lastly, I did enter the Chasseur into the 2024 Infinity Paint Contest. This is the first time I’ve joined the competition, and we’ll see how I rank.
