Choose: Boxy Battletech, or anime Robotech/Macross... And it seems you did with Obsidian Protocol XD

Yeah but my response was more about this:
Battletech is more than a decent robot combat game. Its a good one. And I have yet to meet someone (or hear of anyone) who doesn't use or accept proxies. Plenty of stories about guys showing up to tournaments with coins etc. as proxies for their robots. If you want anime aesthetic, it doesn't stop you form playing Battletech at all ...

He said a GOOD robot game.

BT is not really good, IMO. sandblasting through armor and tracking heat levels effectively means that any one player cannot handle more than 4-5 mechs.

It's a shame that Robotech RPG Tactics was so mismanaged, it is actually a really good (defined as 'matching the source materials' so cinematic combat) game. You can run probably 50 models a side.

Heavy Gear Blitz has a better damage mechanic, and you can still get PDFs of the older Heavy Gear v1/v2/v3 books if you want higher detail on each individual mech. "better" meaning that if my attack roll (times weapon damage) beats your armor value, you suffer light damage; if my attack beats twice your armor value, you suffer heavy damage; and if my attack beats triple your armor value, you're killed outright. Much more conducive to having lots of mechs on the table!

Its almost like what makes a game fun is subjective.

To be fair, there are games that go for tactical and games that go for strategic (and those that add Logistics, but let's not get professional here, armchair is good XD). Battletech always was Tactical because of the times: plastic models in short number, small maps, etc...
Even the latest Battletech PC game (by Harebrained schemes) gives you a limited number of mechs to play with (8 at most on your side), while others go for FPS style. After all, the fluff at the time was that a 'Mech was something akin to lost technology kept running thanks to patches, blood and sweat more than anything. The old Mechwarrior RPG, in fact, had one Mechwarrior "profession"... while providing plenty other ones for spies, soldiers, Elementals.... XD

There’s also BT Alpha Strike, Battleforce, and plenty of rules beyond the basics to look for the game to grow. I enjoy battletech and plenty of people agree it’s a great robot game. The bigggest game I played was fun recently with 12 mechs per side, plus VTOL support, infantry, battle armor, and tanks. Probably around 25-30 models per side. Part of why I love it as a robot game is due to the perspective combined arms gives. As TheRedZealot says ... taste can be subjective.

But I do think a game that has remained in play for so long had some merit behind it ...

I just want my robots to be pretty and break the laws of physics with their joints, is that too much to ask?

Hoping for a last minute drop in GBP to AUD exchange rate before I go Warlord. I love all the factions and I want all the parts.

Highly successful kickstarter just ended for a whole new wave of models and some updated rules so I’m just assuming plenty of folks still love/play the game. I know I do.

@oldGregg @Dragonstriker I love Battletech, but it is the case in point why every attempt to "Advance the plot" of INFINITY fills me with dread.
