After some convincing, I have finally given infinity a try. After 3 games, I love it. I purchased a CA starter box and now I am looking to expand into a 300 pt Onyx list. I have thoroughly read Gamma Ray's Onyx guide, which helped immensely. Below is the 300 pts list I am thinking of running. Any positive or negative feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea what I am doing. A couple things: A second group with only two models is rough, because you're really just opening yourself up to losing two orders first turn in your main group. Also, if you already have the CA starter, then you already have half the 300 pt Onyx box. Lastly, you generally don't make lists before you know which missions you are going to try because your list composition generally depends a lot on that. Do you have a mission you were going to do?
That is a good point regarding the lost turn 1 orders. Unfortunately we usually choose a mission at the time of play, not a head of time. Is that unusual?
Not unusual, but you would probably build your list right then and there. That's what I usually do in my PUGs. What you can do is decide whether you'd like a Unidron Core (looks like it) or a Rodok core and then build half a list that you can tweak and add to depending on the mission.
You've already got a HD+ on the Umbra Legate, and a Lt with the 2nd Umbra... Maybe consider running Kerr Nau with the Unidron link instead? He provides much greater offensive punch than a normal Nexus.
He's in the Army web app. (Not the mobile or desktop yet though) He is also a "Nexus Operative" for Linking purposes.
Consider adding a second ikadron and 2 ia beacons ( the 4 point entry) at secound group tue reach 15 orders. If you pick a normal unidron insted of the hacker nexus you win 9 points to do it at with the ikadron reapeter you hacker plus umbra can buff them anyway.
Your list appears to have a lot in the way of nasty special forces but not so many orders to back it up, As @Sabin76 mentioned you're exposing yourself to having orders taken away, the Malignos and Q-Drone are also probably going to want some orders to try and get the most out of that 62 points, you may just want to leave your Q-drone as a backstop but that malignos is probably going to want some more orders to press buttons/be a pest/re-camo. Kerr-nau is an option and would certainly add some hacking offense to your list and a bit more firepower, the other side of the coin is that you'd lose a possible source of supportware (your Umbra probably wants to be using white noise or cybermask instead for more effective murdering) you'd also lose one of the two possible models that is your Lt making assasination to disrupt your order pool more likely. You have a Rodok HMG and a Q-drone, they are both excellent, one is fast, can take supportware and has TR the other is better natural BS, can attack from unexpected angles and gives you a drop of insurance for loss of LT but the pair may be a little much in a short order pool. Personally I'd drop one and upgrade your K1 umbra Lt to a spitfire umbra Lt for some mid range mimetic supremacy and an excellent choice for suppression fire and an excellent I need my LT to do some cool s*** this turn option, that +1B from combi to spitfire also really ups survivability in active turn, your spare points could go into some line troopers or cheer leading remotes like ikadron, immetron and R-drones (probably all three with change for the spitfire) You could also put that Umbra spitfire in the Unidron+nexus link for some terrifying 5 man link team burst 5 Bs 15, can't sneak up on me, horror show I feel it's my legal obligation to say pick up Dr Boobworm (meditech) as your only source of Dr, engineer and D-charges to patch up your troops and complete those classified objectives that win games - put this in italics to remind myself to copy paste this line into every 'I'm starting CA post' from now on. Other possible suggestions: removing the Q-drone, Rodok and malignos would leave an Overdron HMC shaped hole and give you a ten order pool, you'd even keep the same count of specialists due to its staldron, not a list that's going to do well in specialist operations but definitely a fun limited insertion list for direct action. As for general list making, I normally make mine in advance whilst bored, build yourself up a little repertoire and experiment a bit with different strategies or build for different scenarios ( a list for Biotechvore and a list for basically any other mission are probably different) obviously that comes with what models you have in your collection.
