Is Vanilla Yu Jing viable?

I agree with kuang shi being a crutch, I specifically played my first year of YJ without Kuang shi or monks, coming from a faction which at the time had the option of Morat vanguard or Seed soldiers I actually enjoyed playing Zhanshi as a cheap linetroop.

So, no surprise on using the Daoying LT2, the 4 Kuang Shi and some Monks.
But the Assault Hacker on the Daofei and no "strong" attack pieces in list 1 is an interesting approach.

 

Major lunah firing through nimbus can obliterate most targets, and a buffed husong can also do a lot of heavy lifting. Especially if there's a tiger soldier or a guilang to potentially alpha strike the fireteam.

 

I know, but most things could be achieved more order efficient with a Daofei HMG or Spitfire and the SWCs are there. Quite curious to learn something new on the list decision though.

 

I agree. I looked at these lists and thought they where not inline with conventional Yu Jing list building.

I as well would love to understand this approach more.

 

No Libertos is like playing with one hand behind your back, so these are not nearly ~disgusting~ compared to the shit that roams in the game these days

Funny, it irks me that some of my favorite profiles are Mercs and not Yu Jing. Liberto, ABH, Lunah, Krakot.

 

Modern vanilla YJ is mercs + Kuang Shi + some HI imho.

 

I really don't like the Kuang Shi, my usual vanilla YJ list has a pair of Guilang and usually a Daofei.

 

Those are my lists and yes they are super disgusting. I am on an upcoming episode of White Noise if you wanted to hear some of the rational behind the list choices. At this point they are undefeated across two tournaments, including NovaCore which was a 92 player event in Australia.

The reason for the Daofei AHD over a spitfire or a HMG is that I generally run it super aggressively into my opponents DZ where the 0-8 range band actually comes into play, and in supplies and supremacy I wanted another midfield specialist which for the Dao Fei means the hacker profile. I don't feel like I ever lacked teeth with my army and certainly didn't regret my choices.

Also there are opinions YJ tends to build into monotonous type; single Rambo (mostly HI) supported with Kuang Shi and some chaffs till points permit. I would like to hear your opinions about it!

Hell yeah its viable, Guilang and Daofei are some of the best midfield skirmishers in the game, they have tons of decent specialists, some of the best AD around in the Tiger Soldiers, a really cheap order reserve, some fantastic rambos, and access to some truly excellent lieutenants.

 

I discuss it briefly on the upcoming episode but I think that people view so called "chaff" in perhaps the wrong way. You can see in my lists above that I have max Kuang Shi in both, but that's not just for orders to fuel whatever rambo piece I have in the list. They are also a very valuable part of the list's defence and aggression. They guard corners really well because if you can't kill them dead they can either go dogged, or if you're close enough explode, and if you're on the offensive you can force some really bad choices on opponents by going after unlinked troopers. If they choose to shoot they run the risk of you exploding, and if they dodge your pistols are hitting on 14s still so certainly not bad.

To answer you actual question, No I don't think that's the only way to play them. There are a lot of very cost efficient profiles in the mid tier range, like the ru shi, lu duan, tiger soldiers and the guilang. Even their cheaper troops can trade up impressively well, like the aforementioned kuang shi and my personal favourite, the monks. My second list got more work out of the two attack remotes than the su jian, who in all of my practice games never even left the deployment zone.
