Is the Icestorm force a good starting point for PanO?

So, seeing as PanOceania and Nomads are my tied second favorite factions, I am planning on getting into both of them via the Operation: Icestorm and Beyond Operation: Icestorm kits ( Soon™ ( I'd like to get that started around early ITS 10. ) ).
So, I've made a basic list using the units given in those lists and I'd like to ask you people what's good and what's bad in it, and if it's really a good way of entering into the faction?

    [IMG] Gen-List: Icestorm

[IMG] FUSILIER Lieutenant Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
[IMG] NISSE MULTI Sniper Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 34)
    [IMG] KAMAU HMG / Pistol, Knife. (1 | 28)
[IMG] SWISS GUARD HMG / Pistol, AP CCW. (2 | 68)
[IMG] AKAL COMMANDO Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, E/M CCW. (0.5 | 28)
[IMG] FATHER-KNIGHT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle, Nimbus Grenades / Breaker Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 46)
[IMG] BOLT Paramedic (MediKit) Combi Rifle + Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 24)
[IMG] ORC Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 42)

    5.5 SWC | 300 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

The Nisse sniper seems to be a pretty ARO piece to lock down a nice fire lane on the table.
The Swiss Guard and Kamau seem like pretty good active offense pieces too ( Would probably push the Kamau along a side path and try brute forcing the Swiss Guard through a more central route on a table. )
The Akal hacker seems pretty decent ( Not sure how comparable it is to a Tiger Soldier hacker, but I have been getting good mileage out of it, so there's that. )
Decently varied selection of specialists too.
So overall I'd think this'd be a solid start, but I'd still like to know your opinions on it. And any suggestions on where to expand from there would also not go amiss.

So, good start, bad start? Are my assumptions here wildly off or do they hit somewhere vaguely in the right direction?

Thanks for reading this at least.

Yeah, it's a fine place to start. Will O:I be your first venture into infinity?

I have some reservations about Vanilla PanO, but there's no denying that it's a useful and helpful place to start. With Infinity (and especially PanO) being very friendly to proxying too, that collection of models will remain useful if you keep playing Vanilla, or can help stand in as any number of Sectorial troops if you decide a Sectorial interests you more.

As for the list itself, the Swiss, Nisse and Kamau are great for active turn firepower. That's perfectly solid. The Father Knight and Akalis Hacker options are a little tridky, because ideally they'd have a Killer Hacker as a deterrent or some cheap dronbots for repeater coverage, but they're still perfectly functional stand-alone choices.

Put it on the table, see how it goes. Yell if you have thoughts or questions.

No, O:I isn't my first venture into this game.
I may have casually brushed on it in this post by mentioning having used a Tiger Soldier ( Awesome unit, BTW. Never once did it fail me. ( Well, it did once, but the comical relief of dispersing into a Sphinx and some other Shasvastii unit with an ML was amusing. ) ), but my first venture is Yu Jings half of O:RV.
Has served me well in two tournaments already, gonna serve me nicely in the one coming up this Sunday, several units gonna probably serve me quite well afterwards ( Namely the Hsien, Daofei and Tiger Soldier. Solid units, all of them. And the Ninja and Guilang sniper have been pulling their weight rather adequately. ). Have even started expanding upon the force ( Splitting Dire Foes 6 with our local Haqq player, probably gonna get the sectorial starter afterwards sometime down the road. )

As for proxying, I'm not too fond of proxying units as other units ( I prefer that when I point at a model and say it is X unit, it is in fact X unit. ). Got no issues with proxying profiles though ( Emperor knows I've never used a Daofei with an HMG. ).

Never thought of the Nisse sniper being a good active turn firepower piece, but then again, never though the Guilang sniper would be either. So I'll have to keep in mind the potential to snipe some unfortunate targets at a distance ( People use smoke quite a lot here, come to think of it. Would be a shame if a sniper saw past it- ).

Gonna probably take a while until I put this list on the table though. Only planning on jumping into O:I roughly when ITS Season 10 rolls around. Give it until late Auttumn, early Winter. I'd like to fix up my Yu Jing and my 40k marines over the Summer. This is, ofcourse, unless I decide to proxy around my O:RV models as O:I models ( Should actually work fairly well, come to think of. The Zhanshi acting as Fusiliers, the Guilang as the Nisse, the Zuyong as the Orc, the Tiger as the Akal, the Hsien as the Father-Knight, the Daofei as the Swiss, Ninja would work as a Bolt I suppose, and the Zhanying can pretend to be a Kamau. ).

    Thanks for the feedback!

Also, would getting the sectorial starters be a good idea expanding upon this collection?

I’m very close (~2 days?) from finishing my Vanilla PanO tactics thread, with a whole section labeled “Starting Vanilla with Icestorm”.

Yes it’s a fantastic place to start, especially if you are new to Infinity. Even if you are an Infinity veteran, Icestorm gets you some great models for relatively cheap.

This is my preferred Icestorm list. I have a lengthy breakdown of it in the tactica, so hopefully you can read that in the middle of this week.

    Welcome to the faction.

Yay, more tactica threads for me to binge upon. Splendid.

That looks a bit light on specialists, if I'm honest. I'd maybe try dropping the Akals cost a bit to fit in some FO Fusiliers or an FO Father-Knight, or some combination of both.

Imo paramedic is just bad, and bolts is a bad platform for it. Also father knight with a combo rifle seems like an awfully expensive combi rifle. Not even a specialist skill on it.

Bolts might make a better hackers, now that I think about it. Actually makes it more probable for Bioimmunity to come into play too.
Will have to toy around in the army builder with that.

Okay, so upgrading from a paramedic to a Hacking device meant I had to downgrade the Father Knight to a Boarding Shotgun. On the flip side, that amps up the amount of active turn combat pieces from 2 ( The Swiss and the Kamau. ) to 3, actually covering the CQC lack both of those leave you with thanks to their HMGs. So I'd say it turns out well. Better than prior, at least.

A couple responses to your comments, @Maksimas.

It’s light on specialists because it was created for a beginner list. The specialists were chosen for their utility as opposed to trying to score objectives - a paramedic for healing and a Hacker for hacking/controlled jump is more useful to a new player playing scoring-light missions. For an ITS-ready list, I’d drop the Fusilier hacker to the base profile and spend those 8 points on the FO Father-Knight, FO Fusilier and Paramedic Fusilier.

Yes Bolts are miserable lumps in Vanilla. But Beyond Icestorm comes with one, and it’s pretty much sculpt-locked into Paramedic, so it’s what I included. Honestly I’d rather field a Kamau hacker than a Bolt.

The basic profile Father-Knight in the list is again meant for new players. It’s an LT decoy, doesn’t have the weirdness of the FO’s Nimbus Grenades, and teaches new players about how to play a close range Rambo unit. My preferred Father-Knight profiles are the Spitfire or AHD, BSG on occasion if I am feeling frisky.

Funny enough, I am starting to use my Bolt Paramedic more as a proxy for my Trauma-Doc since I lost the original. Probably the only way she is getting fielded. :P

And have not bothered getting the support pack because I am waiting on a resculpt.
