Hello! I'm a wargamer looking to get into Infinity and YJ is one of the armies I'm interested in. Is the Bow Ninja worth buying Red Veil (the price paid for Haqq models is not a factor) instead of a starter? Are the units usable in competitive lists? Or should I just buy a regular starter box instead?

I've been doing some reading and Ninja with Tactical Bow seems to show up in many recommended lists so I'm not sure how to start. Thanks in advance for any input, I'd appreciate other suggestions/starting ideas as well, cheers!

I'm not one to comment on reasonable financial decisions. I bought Red Veil twice, specifically for two ninjas.

As for the models themselves, the ones contained in Red Veil are a great starting point for playing Yu Jing. The Zhanshi are pretty generic line troops, the Hsien is an active turn monster, and the Tiger is one of the best drop troopers out there. The Zuyong is pretty average but he's a good model for use as a proxy or as a link filler in IA later on.

The core of your question however is the Ninja, and she's a very good trooper. I could wax lyrical for hours about her virtues, but for now suffice to say she's a legend.

For purchases moving beyond Red Veil, there's is obviously Beyond Red Veil. Gives you a Dafoei who's another really cool Yu Jing model, a Guilang who's one of our best specialist options, and a Zhanying who is lacklustre in vanilla (just my opinion).

But before buying the beyond models, I'd consider the Yu Jing remotes box, support pack (doctor and engineer) and some shaolin monks to pair nicely with the Hsien and Remotes.

    Welcome to the game mate!

Yes, Red Veil is a good place to start. Good selection of models to work with, and comes with a 'how to learn the basics of Infinity' mini-campaign.

I'm actually rather annoyed that the only place to get the TacBow Ninja is Red Veil, because that model shows up ALL THE TIME in lists.

We had the chance to pay $45 euros for it in the Kickstarter Reinforcement pack. :(

To the OP. Yes, Red Veil is a GREAT place to start with Yu Jing. That is where I started. :D

I am starting YJ right now and intend to play without Red Veil. But I already have a specific army design in my head and there will never be a place for Zhanshi, Hsien or Zuyong. And I just have having minis around, that I will never use.
At some point I need the Ninja, but I might just use the old one or buy a huge amount for a splitbox one.

Personally I have not yet seen Zhanshi or Hsien in a tournament Vanilla List but they can be very solid. Just for me Kuang Shi and Rui Shi fulfill far too similar roles

In my experience Rui Shi and Hsien are vastly dissimilar. One is an artillery piece and tthe other is the flanker. In O-12 the comparison is Epsilon vs Sirius Red Fury and ffor Pan-O Nisse vs Bulletteer.
I think you need a strong reason to move the Hsien around too much, be it that you're ISS and can drag Zhanying around as personal servants or that you need to get 60 points into a zone. Rui Shi on the other hand rarely is able to get anything done in the back field, being outranged by just about anything that peeks out. Rui Shi really struggle with Kamau, Brawler or Nisse snipers unless the board is semi-claustrophobic.

That said, Hsien is not for every list, far from it, but if you're staying in Yu Jing for any amount of time it's absolutely a good unit to learn.

I think this is correct. You can make them work together really good since both of them benefit from smoke support, but they complement each other. Hsien are great for clearing out AROs and anything that can be seen from your DZ, while Rui Shi get work best when they can reach their good range band fast.

I love the Hsien (even when his dice constantly disappoint) and Haidao Sniper, and I hate the Rui Shi. They're all very different units, don't let the MSV2 fool you.

From the RedVeil models, I regularly use:
    - The Ninja in most non-IA YJ lists
    - the Zhanshis in IA for the cheap core fireteam
    - The Hsien in ISS and Vanilla from time to time
    - Almost never the Zuyong
    - Almost never the Tiger Soldier

Proxies are possible, and I used them a lot until I bought the models with the fitting profile.

I strarted on infinity as a red veil box and i thing is a good one if you aim to Vanilla Yu Jing. All the models except for the zuyong are usfull. The 3 zhansis are a good way to get orders and hide the leutinent (even if the daoying outclasses them a bit) the ninja and the tiger are two top porfiles in their role. The Hsien is a heavy shooter very usful in vanilla and Imperial Service ( even if his half bother Hac Tac usually get more atention).

The Zuyong can be used as a proxy of the tactical sense HMG, but is the only porfile from the box not usually used on vanilla lists. (but the basic bone of Invencible army sectorial)

Anyway red veil is a very good box to start with the game, beacuse you get a bit of everything. But at the same time it brings porfiles very usfull as a base for a vanilla list.

    Cheers
