Don't get me wrong: I don't expect people who live and breath Brass to be interested in Defiance (though Brass is a fantastic game), nor do I expect the folks who're just after buckets of plastic to stay around long. Defiance is, however, a dungeon crawler; and dungeon crawlers are board games--not war games--and when you're competing in that market, campaign length (or the availability of alternate modes of play--e.g., skirmish) and replayability matter. A lot. In fact KDM--which you cite as a successful example of this sort of niche game--traded heavily on its long, immersive campaign and replayability. :-)
lol at comparing this to gloomhaven lol at comparing this to the endless churn of cmon products lol at comparing this to kdm just lol
That’s the thing. While I don’t Corvus Belli is going to be seriously competing in that market, I don’t think anyone actually cares about being serious competition. At least not enough caring to change what’s going on. Privateer Press tried to do a spin off board game twice, with Undercity and Widower’s Wood. They tried using the same or similar sculpts as their regular models, in plastic/resin/whatever, and then tried to tell people that those figures weren’t supposed to be used in the wargame. The game had similar mechanics to the wargame, but fear of sales losses won out vs. cross over sales. If the figures are all useable in Infinity, then you get cross over sales. If it ends up being “something you can use Infinity figs for if you don’t play the wargame”, then you get crossover sales. There’s already the comments on Kickstarter about “playing Infinity using Arieste rules”. That might actually be better for CB than trying to be serious competition in the board game market. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m currently at the “Here’s my 200 bucks, give me Shaasvastii in a year” stage. If I ever actually play Defiance, or it turns out to be a good game, that’ll be an amazing bonus. I think probably it’ll be a decent game. If it isn’t, I’ll probably see if I can build scenery out of all of that cardboard. :)
lol at you not getting point of the post, just lol XD btw. if you are interested in sf dungeon crawlers, have a look at Nemesis, it's very 'Alien' type of game. Heroes minis are nothing to write home about, but aliens are quite nice. Gameplay is also very good, you can play as pure co-op or with potential traitor among your ranks, depends about what goals for your personal missions you draw. It's also quite hard to win! Then there is Imperial assault, there is app for full co op, or you can play 1vsMany. Plenty of expansions for that one. Galaxy defenders is also quite fun, though minis are nothing special unfortunately.
Since the campaign is already written the tiles would seem to be locked in unless there are mission expansions. Why would you need extra tiles that don't fit into the missions given? (Yes I get custom missions, but CB doesn't seem to be considering that sort of thing currently)
@Disko King I played Nemesis and its on my buy list in the future, but its not what i would call a Dungeon Crawler, its replaying the first Alien Movie and the like, but it lacks a campaign. Stil fun and i backed the Etherfields Kickstarter from Awaken Realms but that will take some time. Imperial Assault is a no go for me. First i am not a big SW Fan and i dislike the publisher FFG / Asmodee. After i got talked into their pay for win X-Wing game its not something i am willing to pay for. There is GWs Blackstone Fortress, but i dont like most of the miniatures and i dont know anyoone whos playing that game Personly i would play the hell out of a new Space Quest if that would ever happen. And for other stuff: CmoN does some nice miniature porn, but the games are boring as hell in my eyes without any replay valure and if you played one, the next feels just the same. Kingdom Death, same miniature porn, but a base game for 400$ is nothing i will buy, when i could only play once or twice a year. I did that with Twilight Imperium 3th with both expansions and can tell its not enough value for the money. As in not enough games to have fun with it. Gloomhaven would be interesting, but lack of suitable players does the rest. Personly i think i can have the most fun with the Defiance Kickstarter.
Hi I thank you for the ideas, criticism and feedback, but I would appreciate keeping the forum rules and unaffiliated KS links and tone of conversation are included in this. I don't know why I need to remind that from the moment metal models were decided classical boardgamers are not a core audience. Now you may compare Aristeia models with massive CMON models who are vastly helped by their size to help fix the problems the casting material has in contrast to small models, but I have to point out that experience in such material is important and CB is new to it, compare the reckless harts and you can see the improvement.
You folks in the know keep telling us who is not the core audience, so here's my question to you: who is the core audience? Based on everything that's been said in the marketing, it isn't just existing Infinity players. But every time anyone suggests another group, the response is "nooooo, CB's not marketing to them." So please, enlighten those of us who were naive enough to believe that a dungeon crawler might be aimed at people who play ... dungeon crawlers ... Seriously, I'd love a straight answer. It's hard to provide constructive feedback to a moving target. :-)
Maybe they are bringing infinity players to boardgames then, since they are not bringing boardgamers to infinity xD?
What there is to enlighten? Boardgamers do not assemble miniatures especially metal, it is well established and documented. There is sizable crossover between wargamers and boardgamers (so people who like assembling models and play wargames) and there is a big pool of people who would like a lighter Infinity experience. I am not sure what is controversial here.
@yojamesbo @Disko King Who is the market for Blackstone Fortress, who was the market for Sedition Wars?
As a boardgames and miniatures gamer I’ll say that I’ve backed this but I’ll probably drop my pledge before the end as there is nothing that really appeals to me at the moment and while I like “exclusive” miniatures I play Haqqislam and having another Doctor/Nasmat doesn’t really get me going. hopefully there’ll be something to keep me interested but we shall see
