I am still a total newb to Infinity and MAF, but I will be giving this haris a go today:

    [IMG] Morat Aggression Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]3
[IMG] KORNAK Lieutenant Mk12, Light Flamethrower / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 41)
[IMG] RAKTORAK Vulkan Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 22)
[IMG] SURYAT Heavy Rocket Launcher, Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (2 | 39)

    2 SWC | 102 Points

I am trying this instead of a Yaogat haris and will see how it goes. I like that the link is pretty tough, seems very killy and versatile both in covered rangebands and functions they can take on the battlefield.

    And the list itself:

Still not sure about trooper distribution among groups, but this is going to be my second 300pts game, so I have little experience in that.

@gru6y The fireteam core should be in your main group and if possible it should include 10 orders.

Having 10 orders to spend on units like the Q drone, Haris, KHD, or other specialists is fine imo. The disadvantage to me is if the active core HMG dies or there's nothing to shoot at... what do I spend the remaining orders on? That core wants to sit back, shoot, and provide orders. I would almost never move it up when MAF has so many other options better suited to an advancing role.

I'd either move a trooper into CG2 as backup or rearrange them as @Belgrim suggests. A core Vanguard HMG just isn't reliable enough to spend 5 orders each turn to me.

Regarding the Raktorak, i think it's a good profile to be dragged up field with a haris. Otherwise it becomes a fragile specialist i don't want to risk spending too many orders on incase it dies. If i'm moving a trooper into contested zones I want my investment in orders to survive.

Not to hijack the thread anymore, I'll just say that the split did not really matter as it all went to shit anyway.
I am really bad at this game, but I don't mind as the community is great and the models are awesome.
Maybe in the future, I'll start my army log so that you guys can help me utilize my MAF better.

It sounds corny, but as long as you learned what you did wrong, it not a bad game.

To be honest, I do not think I have.
Me and my opponent are still both learning the game and we do a lot of mistakes in rules and gameplay and on top of that I had really bad rolls, but all of the above did not really matter. I did not have a plan, I got completely lost with what I want and should do and I did not achieve anything besides killing some distraction models my opponent fed me. The feeling of total disorientation and completely not knowing what to do and how to play has been accompanying me in all of my Infinity games so far and to be honest it bothers me a bit. I've been playing miniature, card and board games for most of my life and never have I felt so lost and not in control.
Hopefully, I'll get to grips with the game and the feeling will go away.

It’s a pretty complex game. If you’re starting it new with someone else who’s new, I’d play through either Icestorm or Red Veil if either of you owns them. The first times I played were playing through these with friends who are completely new to war gaming in general, and they’re pretty good at getting the basics down. The other option is find someone who plays already and play some games with them. The only time I’ve played properly so far is a tournament. There was a tournament near me so I asked if they were okay with a newbie playing, and they were all really helpful and I found for me it was a good way to learn everything, and I felt more confident with each game. They all gave me feedback after each game to point out mistakes I’d made. That was a while ago now (over a year!) so I’ve probably forgotten it all!

Yeah, I played through Red Veil, got intro'ed by a WarCor, attended a tournament, played a couple more games (including a game with a WarCor by my side assisting and explaining stuff to me) and I still feel like an idiot playing Infinity. I am roughly 10 games in, excluding RV.
Thank you guys for your comments, but lets end it here as this is a topic about our unbeloved Seargant Major.
If I keep on struggling, I will start my own topic with some thoughts on why I might suck so hard.

Alternatively, if a mod would be willing to cut the discussion from the post with my list and open a new thread, we could go on from there.

Besides Infinity being a very complex game you also face the challenge of playing MAF.
It's not about MAF being "bad" they (usually) just lack the obvious center pieces.
With other armies you often have some very obious options to do something, be it achieving mission points by pushing buttons or killing stuff. MAF lacks a lot of those options (like, say, a Camo'd Infiltrator or a rambo unit with a trick (HI with Camo, MSV or something similar) or even an AD specialist).
So, MAF imho are a rather "hard" choice to get into the game. You are kind of forced to achieve everything with everybody in your army.

Have you already had a look at Vanilla CA or Onyx? With picking 2-3 models you might really be able to create a more focussed army. It's usually a more one-trick-pony thing but from my experience this allows for an easier approach towards the game in general.

And don't worry too much, I know quite some veteran players who still struggle to make MAF work for them because of the mentioned reasons and had some trouble with MAF myself. But it is absolutely worth it and rewards you with learning how to win without all the usual tricks - which will fail one day or the other anyways ;)

Yeah, I already figured that out. Whenever I compare my soldiers against other races they always seem to be outperformed in their role. This does not bother me too much as I absolutely love the new model design. The whole MAF range is a blast to paint and look at, so I do not mind them being a bit weaker as a trade-off. I do understand that it should not be this way, but heh- what can we do?
On the upper side, I always enjoyed playing the less popular races and being the underdog in a fight, because as you mentioned- the feeling of pride and accomplishment when you actually manage to squeeze in a victory is worth it all.

Yup, already picked up the Onyx box as it feels like a very natural branch out of MAF into Onyx and vanilla CA. I will start working on it once I finish my monkey models. I also got the Yu Jing part of RV and Beyond in the CB Black Friday sale. I have loads of miniatures to play with ;)

    Thanks for the encouragement.
I played a game against a WarCor last Thursday. We played a 250pts Firefight. He played Tohaa, which was very.... enlightening experience (so that is how the real tough aliens feel like!). Again, the feeling of helplessness was present however two experienced players helped me with deploying my links (which is the thing I always struggle the most with) and my opponent walked me through the game and explained a lot on how Tohaa works, while still managing to obliterate me 9:1.

I will try to get another game in this Thursday, but this time I will post my list and a short batrep.

I would suggest smaller games with more limited amounts of models. 200 points, with just basic cheerleaders and HI and no sectorials. Once you can start winning games then slowly add in more rules, camo, AD, etc. One unit type at a time.

Leave sectorial play and how to properly use links for last. MAF is a very restrictive sectoral. You really need to know what your doing to win with them. Honestly, sectorials are better left for after players get more experience with the game.

Another suggest to make is to ask to switch armies that beat you. Getting some playtime of your own other factions armies can teach you what they are capable of. Also, seeing how more experience players use your MAF army will be a good learning experience.

MAF is not so bad. If you want to play an underdog (up to now) try shasvasti. Speculo killer and sphinx are good but the rest is quite normal but you pay for them as if they are pros (looking at seed soldiers and gwailos. And it is really hard finding a Leutnant or hacker

I do not have any nonMAF models ready, so I am stuck with them for better or worse.
Tomorrow I will be playing a 200pts Biotechvore with the following list:

    [IMG] Morat Aggression Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]6 [IMG]1
[IMG] MORAT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
[IMG] MORAT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
[IMG] KORNAK Lieutenant Mk12, Light Flamethrower / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 41)
[IMG] SOGARAT AP HMG / Pistol, AP CCW. (2 | 56)
[IMG] SOGARAT Feuerbach / Assault Pistol, AP CCW. (1.5 | 57)
[IMG] DĀTURAZI Chain Rifle, Grenades, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 14)

    3.5 SWC | 198 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

We will only have 1.5h to play, so there will be time pressure.

I know when you compare MAF troops to other factions it might look weaker because they have all this and mine only has this for the same points. But never forget they all have MORAT they can't be isolated, they don't make guts checks and if the Lt. bites the bullet, well that was his fault we don't care.

It might be a good idea to swap the two vanguards for more daturazis. That way you have two fireteams and can use your orders better. Biotechvore is a mission where order efficiency is key to success

Yeah, I know, but I only have one Daturazi. The two vanguards are a core team, of course, so I should be able to move everything into safety and maybe even kill some Bakunin punks in the first turn if I am lucky.
Also having FO helps a tiny bit with Classified Objectives, though I am not keeping my hopes high, as most likely I will not be able to complete them.

You could maybe proxy those two? It shouldn't be a problem, especially since you're starting and don't have many models.

this. Daturazi form a core too. You could even go for a core of vanguards instead since the 3 model team would at least get a burst bonus. You do lose smoke cover, but since it's biotechvore it might not matter that much. Something like this:

    [IMG] Morat Aggression Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]6
[IMG] KORNAK Lieutenant Mk12, Light Flamethrower / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 41)
[IMG] SOGARAT Feuerbach / Assault Pistol, AP CCW. (1.5 | 57)
[IMG] SOGARAT AP HMG / Pistol, AP CCW. (2 | 56)
[IMG] MORAT Paramedic (MediKit) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 16)
[IMG] MORAT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
[IMG] MORAT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)

    3.5 SWC | 200 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

Gives you one extra specialist and two fireteams. Why not?

As a rule, I do not proxy models and only play with painted stuff.
I think I like this list the most, however I saw your post after I finished playing, so I stuck to my initial plan.

All in all, these are nuances and would not matter much, as my ultra expensive +150pts haris of death got owned by a core of Moderators and a Morlock.
I thought that taking two ranged weapons might not work in a close combat enviroment of Biotechvore, but I thought that sticking to one side of the table will help me stay in optimal range bands. I was wrong.
At least I did not feel so helpless. I just played badly. :D

    Got another game in yesterday.
It was a part of a local league, which means, you can bring two army lists into a game, but you randomly select the ITS9 mission just before playing.
We played The Grid and I used the following list:

    [IMG] Morat Aggression Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]10
[IMG] Bit Hacker (UPGRADE: Expel) Submachine Gun + Pitcher, Deployable Repeater + KISS! / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 19)
[IMG] [IMG] KISS! Adhesive Launcher / Electric Pulse. (- | 4)
    [IMG] MED-TECH OBSIDON MEDCHANOID Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 23)
[IMG] SLAVE DRONE Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)
[IMG] MORAT (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
[IMG] MORAT Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14)
[IMG] MORAT Missile Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 19)
[IMG] MORAT Hacker (EI Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 22)
    [IMG] ANYAT K1 Combi Rifle, Chain-colt, Smoke Grenades, E/M Grenades / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 25)
[IMG] KORNAK Lieutenant Mk12, Light Flamethrower / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 41)
[IMG] RAKTORAK Vulkan Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 22)
[IMG] SURYAT Heavy Rocket Launcher, Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (2 | 39)

    GROUP 2[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]4 [IMG]1
    [IMG] Q-DRONE HMG / Electric Pulse. (1 | 26)
[IMG] DĀTURAZI Chain Rifle, Grenades, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 14)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)

    5.5 SWC | 300 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

    My opponent played Tohaa.
The first turn went really badly as I have lost my both ARO pieces and wasted a lot of orders trying to get rid of a pesky Clipsos, who due to my bad deployment tied my haris in place. It went much better from then on thanks to a lucky HRL shot killing Gao Rael sniper. This allowed me to move my core link more freely.

Due to some bad decissions, I only managed to pull off a draw, but this game was winnable. For the first time, I really enjoyed playing my Vanguards, who with Anyat seemed an ideal team to complete the main objective. All in all, had a really good time.
