    Yeah right, that's super interesting! I don't think KS are necessary and it sounds like you're managing without them just fine - i look forward to experimenting without them. However, at the minute i am trying to learn to use them and learn their value. The way I use them is midfield control and area denial. They're the only troop that are order efficient (impetuous), thus allowing them to enter the midfield quickly and order efficiently ( impetuous +1 order/coordinated order) - they also give us solidity(dogged), something the faction is seriously lacking (RuiShi prime example) - the dogged and chainrifles can really tie up and trade with enemy models.

    I guess what i am trying to say is that i don't use them solely as order batteries. The latest list I posted I want to utilize brining them in a 5 man link with Xi, forking AROs with madtraps and KS makes me tempted to add a single BSG profile to the list.

    That's better to me. The Ninja has a lot of orders to do what it needs to and it's hard to tell there might be a ninja. It's not bad for Xi too. He needs the orders to do anything.

    Question: what mission is this for?

    ISS Event Report



    Recently I was lucky enough to participate in Australia’s longest running 2 day event, Cancon. This was an event of 52 players in which many experienced players flock from different states to the capital ACT, Canberra. I am very proud to say I did very well and came in 3rd place with ISS ending the day with - 21TP, 34 OP, 947. I ran only one list for all 5 games, as per below. I did have a second list, which was designed for Acquisition and Cryo but when I found out my opponents, I opted to use the list i had most experience with

    I lost the initiative roll, with my opponent opting for deployment and sides, I chose to act first.

    I paid the command token and kept the Hsien and Major Lunah in reserve. Both of us set up majority of our forces on the left side. My opponent opted to have both his Riot Girl MLs standing and watching majority of the table, on a building close to the 16 inch line, below he had a lot of morlocks and such to support them with the TAG behind said building. I deployed my Kuang Shi link on that same left side along with the Hsien, MH bounty hunter, Lunch and ML bot. My Harris of Dakini HMG/Paramedic/Pheasent were sadly on the other side of the table and going to be no use in facing off against these ML launchers.

    One of the critical things of my list is that I need to push the Kuang Shi link into the midfield, I usually utilise smoke to do this but seeing as the Riot Grrls had MSV 1, I was forced to deal with them or have my link remain in place. I used the Hsien to engage the Riot Grrls, getting within 16 and using majority of group 1s orders. I managed to push the console on the left side and force both Riot Girls to go prone, from either taking a wound of failing courage (this was not a good fight for me, It was hugely risky — 3d 14s(AP) vs 2d 13s(AP+EXP) I got lucky to win both engagements and achieve my goal, I then pulled the Hsien back and put him on suppression fire overwatching middle console with major Lunah covering his back.

    With his Riot Girls prone, I used group 2 to push the KS link hard and parked them right under the building of the Riot Girls and around the console, killing a morlock or two in the process.

    My opponent had a lot of trouble with the KS, as they traded with his morlocks but remained dogged on the table as a template threat to his Riot girls who hesitated to stand up. He eventually switched gears and went after the Hsien with his Lizard. He could only engage within 16 and due to awkward placing of Morlock he could not slice the pie with Hsien and Lunah. He opted to engage both, taking 2 wounds but making it to the middle console for cover and out of Lunah’s sights. His final act was standing up one of the ML Riot Girls to provide overwatch.

    On my turn 2, I used the ninja to move aggressively towards the link, spotlight a riot girl and clip both with a guided round. I then used the ninja to go after one of his moderaters who just happened to be his LT. Whilst the Hsien went onto flank the Lizard and take its final wound.

    My opponent was in LoL and did what he could, using the spitfire Riot girls to hose down my ninja and any remaining KS. Avicenna and Fidler both crawled into position over the remains of the Riot Girls.

    My turn 3, I used my Hsien to push the right console and then finish up on the middle on. Whilst the left and right had Xi Zheng and Dakini HMG securing them respectively.

    My opponents turn 3, he tried to clear me off the left-side objective, be had too little in the tank remaining.

    (Eudoros, Acmon, Pheonix and Pandora are a link)

    This was a game against one of my local training partners in which we were both intimately familiar with each others lists.

    I won the roll and opted to take sides, my opponent choosing first act.

    My opponent deployed aggressively on a rooftop that had a walkway which lead directly to a building where many of my troops had deployed behind. I deployed my ninja under this walkway and some KS and madtraps.

    My opponents first act was to push right down my throat, pushing a console and killing a decoy on the way with his 4 man link. Eudoros was spearheading this assault killing KS mercilessly in his approach. It was a very difficult decision, but I felt I had to reveal my ninja to slow his alpha strike and opted to spotlight Eudoros with the idea that it would give me an easy way to remove him next turn as my RuiShi was far away and I was expecting my Hsien to die. The spotlight went off, but Eudoros failed to kill the ninja, so it cost him another order, in which I used the ninja to isolate Pandora. Eudoros eventually ran out of steam after slaughtering all my KS, Ninja, Dakini HMG. My opponent needed 2 orders to get Pheonix back to safety as he was his LT and we both knew this.

    I began my turn by firing up my Hsien and going onto that rooftop and killing Pandora where she had been left behind and Eudoros. I had to act very cautiously here, because as much as I wanted to chase down Pheonix, I knew Atalanta was hiding somewhere. I moved Lunah to a position to get a bead on Pheonix with my first short skill, he opted to delay and my opponent had to delay with Atalanta at this point and reveal her position. I chose not to shoot. Instead I coordinated order with my ML bot and Lunah and shot Atalanta, who went down to an unopposed missile and Lunah also survived. Pheonix ducked prone and out of LoS.

    Turn 2 my opponent pushed another button and shuffled into position.

    I went on an assassination run here with my Hsien, I killed Acmon who was guarding Pheonix on the rooftop. I also pushed the console, flipping it and revealing his Designated Target. I then proceeded to make the mistake that nearly cost me the game. I moved to see Pheonix and failed to move back outside of 3inches. I then proceeded to lose the f2f against his dodge and have him engage me in CC. We were both prone on the rooftop, so I could not use Lunah’s triangulated fire to get me out of this squeeze.

    Turn 3, Pheonix killed the Hsien, Thorak Harris killed Lunah opening the board for my opponent, he revealed Designated and killed it with Pheonix.

    My turn 3, I had to kill Pheonix, which I managed with RuiShi, pushed another button, flipping it. Killed a decoy with my motorised bounty hunter and used Gui Feng to kill his Designated target with my second last order.

    (very hazy on this one and groups are obviously wrong)

    I lost the initiative roll and my opponent opted for deploy and I went first turn.

    My opponent deployed very cagey and withdrawn. This allowed me to secure 2 supply crates, return to my DZ and hunker down. Gui Feng half one box on the right side, secured by a horde oh KS and mantraps. The other box on the left side was secured by Dakini paramedic, who was guarded by CSU, bounty hunter, Dakini HMG, Pheasent and mantrap.

    My opponent used his MH bounty hunter to clear CSU, the cutter to climb up high and deal with my motorised BH. This gave his Liang Kai a clear run to assassinate my Pheasant, Dakini HMG, Hsien. Putting me into LoL. This was a rough start. Aside that, my opponent didn’t have much orders to do anything else. It should be noted during his attack run, the Liang Kai was practically walking on top of my Ninja, but I held out and didn’t reveal.

    My turn 2, I used paramedic diking to heal Hsien and Pheasant, aside that I was happy with my position as I still had objective lead and he didn’t have anything to push into my with aside pathfinder and Montessa, who were both pinned down by Lunah. His Tutonic knight was set up to take the console middle console.

    My opponents turn 2, he claimed the middle console with the Teuton as I predicted and retreated to safety. He then tried very had to reveal Lunah, failing on a 14 with his pathfinder. He eventually unpinned his Montessa by blocking Lunah's sight line with the Cutter to move him across and set up for turn 3 assasination run. I didn't mind, as the pathing meant that Montessa was on course for my hidden Ninja

    Turn 3, instead of hunkering down, I went on an attack run with my Hsien to try remove the few pieces my opponent had to push with, including the Montessa. I died at the first hurdle to the Helot LRL. Terrible. After that, I moved my Dakini paramedic with the supply crate deeper into my DZ near and went prone.

    Turn 3, my opponent went for his attack run with Montessa to drop one of the boxes. I revealed ninja HD to hack him, we both failed, he then tried to find a good way to deal with it, but ultimately it cost him 3 orders, leaving very little in the tank for his Montessa. His only option left was to go directly with Montessa resulting in him being lit up by Lunah, KS pistols, mad traps and boarding shotgun rounds. I also opted to shoot smoke on my Dakini with my Monitor, effectively winning the game, as he didn’t have enough orders to get to Gei Feng or get into CC with Dakini.

    However, my opponent was present enough to play to his outs and realised he still had 2 orders and a GL. So he spec fired his GL onto my Dakini, it was 32 inches exactly. He needed 3s, he rolls a 1. I failed my dodge(7 or less) and armour save(14 or more)

    I lost the roll, and my opponent elected to go first. He began sharply by pushing two buttons, dropping in his drop troop, spotlighting both my Son-Bae and RuiShi and nuking both. To me this said very clearly that my ninja will be what wins me the game if I am to win it at all. Not having an efficient way to get rid of his Marut was going to be problematic. He chose not to advance his Marut out of his DZ turn 1, instead relying on Penny and the hodge podge mixture of troops to win his two nearest sectors.

    My turn 1, I advanced my KS link, using a mad trap and BSG KS to kill his Ekromoi hacker and set up in a way that would secure me against any push he might make on the left side, as well as securing my zone. My rightsize, I used my Hsien to go on the offensive and kill Penny and win the far zone, whilst my near zone was secured by my CSU. I knew this was effectively a sacrifice of my Hsien, as he had his Proxy hacker nearby. I thought this was a worthwhile trade, as ultimately I needed to capitalise on my advantage of going second and get an early lead and makin him come out. I also didn’t see much in his list that could go forward and break through my lines if I was dug in, aside Penny.

    Turn 2, he isolated the Hsien and then came through with his MH BH and traded for my Hsien. Both going Unconscious. This cost him more orders than he planned as my Hsien dodged into CC (he made a similar mistake to me in game 2) He also brought our his Marut and secured his near zone and the left side. Setting up to overrun me turn 3.

    Turn 2, Ninja went after his Marut, managing to get to the other side of the building and isolating it after 3 orders, putting my opponent into LoL for his turn 3. I also did a bit of damage on the left side.

    Turn 3, he pushed his Marut using its two orders into my near right zone, killing my ninja in the process. The only thing securing the far right zone for him though was a proxy hacker. I managed to medikit Hsien with diking on b2 and get him up, effectively tying the zones as he died in the far right zone, which he was now out pointing. So all I needed to do was psh two consoles and I should have the game. I managed to do that, whilst also killing the Marut with my Pheasant rank BSG. My opponent initially opted to shoot f2f, but lost then next order he flamed me, we traded.

    Another Aleph player with a likely Marut, meant I could not risk the Sun Tzu list as it simply has no answers to TAGs

    Lost the roll, I rolled 17(I was afraid this was foreshadowing that I made a mistake not trusting Sun Tzu haha)

    Forced to go first.

    I deployed my KS link on the left side, ready to get the near console. Whilst the Dakini Harris was on the rightside. I chose to make my Pheasant my data breacher and he there was a very good place to hide him on the right, about 2 orders away. Added to the fact that he had a mad trap, I figured it would keep him safe.

    My opponent deployed his Marut on my left side, Knauf centrally on a building, Myrmidon was made his Data Breacher, also on a building ready to crawl into the zone and out point anything that comes near it with the Marut. Whilst on the right side, he had his hacker, proxy, beast hunter and 2 exposed net rods.

    I pushed my KS link left side, into a tight nook, pushing the console and getting a HVT. I went for an attack run with the Hsien, seeking to kill the Proxy mk5, 2 net rods, hacker and Beasthunter. I spent 7 orders and failed to kill anything other than a netrod, as his Mk5 wouldn’t fail an armour save. I was very tilted.

    My opponent, isolated and bricked my Hsien but opted not to push on that flank, instead he went with the Marut trying to clear my KS, who proved to be well positioned. The BSG KS was within 8 of the Marut and put a wound on it, whilst the other one he saw beat it in f2f with a pistol as he got it out of cover on 12s. My opponent though better of this plan and retreaded the Marut after flaming my BSG KS into dogged. He also moved his Proxy Hacker onto a ledge above that link and reinforced it with a Libertos.

    Turn 2, I had to clear the hacker before I could make a run with my ninja. So I used my KS to get onto the ledge and template the Libertos who had revealed planting a mine earlier, and clipping both him and the proxy. They opted to trade, which is when I blew up and killed proxy with shock. Ninja then made a dash for the data breacher, managing a spotlight on the myrmidon, before dropping a direct strike onto his head with the Son-Bae. I also cleared up the Mk5 and hacker with my Rui Shi to secure right side and push my new LT into his hidey hole. This left with me not enough orders to revamp the ninja.

    My opponents turn 2. He revealed HVT with his console on the left side near the mart and all the action with KS. He cleared my ninja who with the Shukra and then came through with his Marut, killing my remaining Ks and then engaging Gei Feng within 8, Dakini, Lunah(at 43 inches) and turret) he was low on orders and having to push hard. Marut took a wound from the flamethrower, Lunah knocking it unconscious. The engineer set up to heal the Marut turn 3.

    I finished off Marut, killed Knauf and Shukra. positioned to win both zones. My opponent tried to take a zone off my by killing Gei Feng, but I passed my saves and he was out of orders.

    It's interesting, in this post, you can see the early iteration of the list i used at the event :)

    I've not managed to keep this thread going strong, but i have obviously been using ISS consistently with a lot of success in general, not just the event

    Thank you for the Tournament report! I love the combination of using the Ninja to call in a Missle Strike. I also like in Game 3 how the opponent used all their tools to snatch a victory.

    Congratulations on your placement in such a big event!

    Is there a list of who played what in the Tournament? I'm curious because it looks like not a single person out of 38 played any Yu Jing at the LVO tournament. That makes me more sad than YJ getting last place!

    Gotta say, your result at cancon made me eager to finally give the hsien MR lieutenant a chance at a local event, and it was a lot of fun: very solid pick, did a lof of heavy lifting. I played him alongside a wu-ming/zhanying fireteam to do a bit of clean up so he can get to the midfield and push buttons.

    I was making a list when I realized how the Pheasant, who you had to have to make a Bao team in the past, does not currently count as a Bao. I feel that was an oversight. Sure, not many use Bao right now and they are probably going to be gone eventually, but it would have been a nice nod at least to those old rules.

    The new book will bring a lot of new profiles / units to the game so its totaly possible to get a small or medium update for ISS. But I would not count for a bigger style relaunch like Bakunin.

    I think it will just be the Daebak reinforcements. I hope for more than that but YJ, especially IS, seems to be low on their priority list.

    I'm getting ready to play IS again! Got my Dakini and Deva painted and ready to go.

    One of the things I keep coming back to is the Hsien Multi-marksman with Tinbot-6. I really want ot make use of that tinbot with him. Does anyone have experience with it? I'm also not sure If I like the Zhanying with Sixth Sense or the Pheasant.

    Why the bounty Hunter Spitfire? They have similar range bands to the Multi marksman and does NOT add that much. It might be better to have a Zhanying HMG or Sforza instead. With Sfroza, you could pretend for him to be a Crane or another Hsien and hide some points (Like a Garuda TacBot in the wings). Burst 4 viral on an x-visor is also no joke.
