You can still get them in the starter boxes, I guess, with the punch-outs

 

Yes I miss the cutouts but I've gotten used to it. And as a compensation the 2player boxes now feature the thicker ones. Also I thonk getting rid of the n3 cuttouts on the boxflaps was already edition change prep (as they changed the design from code1 on)

 

There were many solutions, but as out of the box, the thin ones were a bit too fiddly. Modern thicker double sides are a vast improvement.
