Not quite. Getting an ARO requires LoF to the enemy.

There are some exceptions, but none of them apply here - for example if it's a ZoC ARO then you're limited to Change Facing, Hacking, BS Attacks that explicitly say they don't require LoF and other Skills that explicitly let you react without LoF.

I wrote what I meant. You can’t declare special dodge during active turn if you don’t have LoF to the enemy, because special dodge is a BS attack and BS attack requires a LoF. BS attack ARO also also needs a LoF.

What happens if enemy declares Dodge ARO during your active turn? Can you declare special dodge since there is no BS attack to avoid?

I thought we were still talking about the reactive turn?

In the active turn a BS Attack needs LoF to the target, which is the spot on the table.

Sure you can. Again, avoiding an enemy attack is a result of using ammo with the Special Dodge Trait, it's not a Requirement. When you're throwing a Smoke Grenade you don't even have to throw it to block LoF, you can throw it somewhere else, for example to hide another trooper in future Orders.

I think the disconnect here is that "Special Dodge" is not an ARO that you can declare, but a trait of the weapon

The ARO is always a BS attack

@ijw did I get this right? Reactive model can try to place smoke template anywhere in his LoF using special dodge? No need to block attacker LoF.

    Yes, that's right.

For example having a Morlock throw smoke in reaction onto a nearby Intruder with Multispectral Visor L2.

That's right. The validity of the "Shoot/throw smoke" ARO isn't dependent on whether it blocks line of fire to the attacker. Smoke won't be face-to-face against attackers where LoF is unblocked, but you're allowed to put it in positions where LoF isn't blocked.

I think it's partially because you could get into coordinated orders or G:whatever or other situations where there are multiple active models with weapons and some of them can ignore smoke. You can come up with situations where either you can't block LoF to all of the attackers, or you simply don't want to because you want to leave the smoke to protect a different target against future attacks.
