Wait, when did we start talking about C having LoF on the final position of A? That's completely different from what this whole discussion has been about... So... we actually agree then?
Heh. My bad. I'm actually misreading my own reply. Now that's embarrassing. Yeah, I agree with you that - under the first example I gave where C does not see the final position - CM should work. I'm not 100% certain, but I agree that it should work and I hope it does work that way.
So, let's see through it again. From rules we have this: "For this Cautious Movement to generate no AROs, it must end at a location that is also outside the LoF and the Zone of Control of all enemy figures and Markers." Are you suggesting it's on per model basis? Because from where I'm standing, it's quite literally demands you to be out of sight of anyone to avoid AROs at all.
No, I'm saying that Stealth specifically calling out Cautious Movement means there is an indication of how things are supposed to work with regards to CM:ing into Engaged state.
But Stealth says very specific things about CM, and there's nothing on CM:ing into b2b (except that Stealth allows you to waltz into b2b, but that has nothing to do with CM). Sneaking right under their noses (in ZoC), on the other hand...
Please provide a real game situation that applies your interpretation of the rules where a model uses cautious move to engage an enemy trooper.
In my interpretation CM never successfully negates AROs on the same order you enter base contact with enemy model and is pointless to declare if you are going to Engage an enemy. If you have at least 2 orders, then you can use first Order to CM and get past enemies watching some midpoint between your model and the one you are seeking to engage (provided you are out of all enemy Lines of Fire at the beginning and at the end point of your movement), then you can enter base contact with your "target" on your next order. Since we assume you has Stealth, none of these 2 orders should generate any AROs (provided your target is out of friendly LoF as well). My understanding is that CM is not intended to be used to reach b2b at all, only to outmaneuver/flank/go through enemy ARO pieces that are far enough, or, if you have Stealth, to get around enemies in tight spaces by virtue of being able to declare and successfully perform CM in enemy ZoC.
Some confusion. OP has created this thread after having a debate on how to use Speculo in CA section of the forum, where he has specifically mentioned this situation: Speculo enters base contact with its intended target using Cautious Movement so that some other enemy model that sees neither Speculo nor a space around the target, but some midpoint of Speculo's movement, could not ARO and potentially stop Speculo from engaging the target. The argument started, and then this thread was created, although the question was about different situation. The question proper, worded in the OP here, doesn't seem to cause any disagreement, so we went on our merry way of bickering about whether Stealthy model can enter base contact with an enemy while enjoying benefits of Cautious Movement against other enemies that can see some part of our Stealthy guys' approach.
It only lifts ZoC requirements. Nothing more. No ARO from target you enter b2b with is an effect that has nothing to do with CM and does not affect whether your CM stops AROs or fails to do so.
Then why does the rules text specifically call out Cautious Movement in the next bullet point... I'm just repeating myself over and over here.
Whatever it is, RAW fails to deliver it. If you want to play it as you're described, all power to you since you're clearly onto something. Personally, I prefer to keep discussions in this section strictly RAW by default since otherwise everyone can play however they like as long as they reach an agreement with their opponents.
Rules as written this seems to be the correct way to interpret this. Maybe it is a rules oversight, but stealth is not modifying the CM skill itself beyond making it viable while in ZoC, it's modifying the legal ARO declarations of Trooper B. Really it's use is to do something like this ^
