A newbie, who is trying to wrap his head around the ALEPH lore here.

Couple questions, firstly can Bureau Toth technically "turn off" ALEPH (albeit with collapse of human sphere)? Secondly, who/what was Odysseus?

Also thank you for this thread, amazing source of lore, plus occasional laughs.

Well the Bureau has authority over ALEPH so I would assume that a kill switch is within that authority. Though we know that Aleph can at times act independently of oversight. Most likely scenario is that Toth has a big red button they slam it. Theres a hiccup, some stuff goes down and then the Aleph backup kicks in to help smooth things over (without Toth's consent).

Im not sure if I'm remembering Odysseus' fluff or Perseus' so someone may have to correct me. But Odysseus was one of the Homeraide (Spelling?) that Aleph created to fight the Combined army on Paradiso. At some point early in that conflict he was potentially sepsitorized and so all backups of him were purged to help protect the operating environment.

Menelaus and Odysseus fell fighting the Combined Army early on Paradiso, and due to suspected Sepsitorisation they were purged. Unclear if they were Recreations or just "earned their names".

I have a vague feeling I remember reading about a reference to Odysseus in the Ajax fluff? I want to say it talked about him being developed as part of the same program that made Ajax/Achilles. Which would imply a recreation. May be a good point to start researching?

    p224-225 HSN3 Guide Book:
Menelaus and Odysseus were Homeridae who were sepsitorised and suffered True Death.
Menelaus fell during the battle of Hua Ling. Odysseus died during the evacuation of Damburg.
All backups were erased in accordance with Directive 7.
Perseus is a rogue myrmidon because he didn't self terminate when capture by CA forces was "inevitable" as required by Directive 7.
Despite assurances that Odysseus is truly dead, doubt (or wishful thinking) lingers. Probably due to Steel Phalanx being the best connected between their lore and their design.
If you haven't listened yet, I highly recommend the Mayacast episode with "Professor" Willett discussing the Steel Phalanx and their lore. (MayaCast Episode 106: It’s All Greek To Me!)

Yep Odysseus is definitely dead and not on some long journey filled with adventures.

Hmm, maybe journey isn't the right word here...

Ajax isn’t a Recreation, but a regular Myrmidon in an advanced body. Patroclus, Penny, Hector, Hippolytus and Achilles are currently the only Recreations we can be sure of in the Phalanx. Atalanta is a “maybe”, in my view, just because so much of her is so secret. Everyone else has won their place in the Homeridae (Thrasmydes against his will).

But Ajax's body was part of the program that was designing Achille's body wasn't it? The body was just not as efficient as Aleph wanted so it shunted a normal 'brain' into it. So while he isn't a recreation he is directly tied to the creation of the recreations (God this sentence is fucking awful). Am I just making up fluff in my head again? D:

Yes, he was an early iteration of the project that brought us Achilles, however his fluff does state:

"Contrary to what is usually believed, Ajax the Great, one of the finest heroes of the Myrmidons of the Assault Subsection, is not a Recreation made by ALEPH. Born with the name Glaboros DG-056, this Myrmidon with a peculiar history would earn the nickname of Ajax the Great in combat, with sweat and blood. Mostly blood, and most of it belonging to his enemies."

Thank you for these insights. Based on what you say, ALEPH has "transcended" Toth's and by extension 0-12 control then? I assume the Human Sphere powers reliant on ALEPH are not aware of this to the full extent or am I wrong? Someone mentioned earlier on that factions have differing degrees of trust with ALEPH but surely they would like to know if Toth/0-12 has ALEPH under control?

Transcended is maybe a strong word for it. Partly because the fluff for Infinity is mostly from specific viewpoints. But Nomads certainly seem convinced that Aleph has managed to breach the Utgard accords and can act independently on its own. So sometimes we see that it can do things that otherwise seem to break the rules. Its possible the Bureau is aware of these breaches or authorizes them on the down low. But I think its more likely that Aleph has some capacity for independent action but chooses to use it only sparingly.

    Lets review what we know:
    • Aleph was programmed to help humanity and essentially manipulate us into not starting any more major wars amongst ourselves.
    • It is conscious but -seems- to continue in its role willingly.
    • Aleph's aspects are fully sentient as opposed to the EI Aspects that appear to be puppets.
    • Aleph has lobbied for increased rights and changes to the Utgard accords when it feels required to do so.
    • Aleph has access to more processing power and more data than we can feasibly imagine.
    • Aleph can manipulate the Data Sphere
    • The Bureau Toth denies all knowledge of Chandra Spec Ops.
    • Aleph Agents have taken illegal action against Nomads in the past.

Now we're moving on to more opinion/speculation on my part so be very aware None of the below is official to my knowledge.

I assume Aleph works something like this:
    • Aleph will analyze many situations to every possible conclusion
    • Aleph will try and act within the law when able
    • Aleph can bend the rules to act independently of its oversight.
      • If Aleph is not able to act independently some of its Agents can and do work on behalf of Aleph unbidden.
IE: If Aleph can't syphon off funds to start the Chandra program Rogue Devas/Post Humans will.
    • Aleph will act in contravention of the law preemptively if it projects a law to change or the benefit to outweigh the harm.
I picture there being lots of situations in which Aleph may step slightly outside the bounds of its rules in ways to try and assist Humans. This can be from the major:
    • Preemptive development and production of Assault Subsection weapons, L-Hosts and similar. The Steel Phalanx was created and deployed exceptionally quickly. (Think Star Wars where Obi Wan shows up to a whole army of Clones sitting around waiting for him to use.)
    • Manipulating Online markets and outsourcing production to Praxis/Haqq labs under various back channels to produce the Chandra Spec Ops.
    • Constructing Black Site back ups without Toth's knowledge to protect against Shasvastii/Nomad Infiltration.
    To the Minor:
    • Use of Advertising and Gameification to encourage healthier behaviour amongst the general populace.
    • Political and Physical manipulation of key detractors. Humans are very prone to manipulation. Aleph could easily say change advertisements to political adversaries to subtly change their habits/thinking. This could be to influence thinking to a more positive tone or potentially to exacerbate bad habits/self destructive behavior to cause an early death.
A good example of my thinking is an older fan theory (sorry I can't remember who came up with it) But basically it went that Aleph is slapping around the Nomads and provoking them specifically as a sort of failsafe in case Humanity loses to the EI. What better way to train up the ultimate AI killing death squad then to be an AI poking a bunch of Radicals in the eye with a stick. So even if it all goes to shit St Mary of the Knife will step in and try and strike the EI down giving Humans at least some chance to survive.

@TheRedZealot I admit that my past perception of Aleph was more so like the common Nomads' point of view. But after I got the urge to look into starting a converted Steel Phalanx force with it's own lore I wanted to study how the A.I. ticks to make the fanfiction believable to Infinity lore standards. The more I read the lore concerning Aleph so far the more I come to think similarly to your thinking in the above post. There is alot more to Aleph than meets the eye along with it's inner thoughts & workings. It can make for some great story telling elements where the A.I. is present or a passing background force.

Yeah I agree I actually entered the short story contest they held a while ago with a little piece on an experimental Aleph testing facility. I imagined a sort of off the books black site were it would pit Aspects against one another repeatedly to analyze behavior, test new algorithms and problem solving solutions. Sort like a real world deep learning facility. I thought it was a very cool idea to explore :) I think its stuff like that that is the most compelling part of the infinity universe for me. The little stories that have something else bigger helping to frame it in the background.

I have a passing thought for another story but its a little dark and I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it work right.

I thought about a story of some historical figures having a chat in a bar, just to reveal in the end that all of them are recreations... Like Sherlock Holmes, George Washington and Mata Hari, or something like that.

But well, Im no native speaker and have little time anyways.

@daszul There is a Sherlock Holmes recreation in infinity lore already. He was made for O-12 but disappeared of his own free will sometime before the current Infinity day/time.
