Caledonia is an excellent army. Maybe not for people learning the game, but for effectiveness and style. I play them a lot and love the army. Yes, Caledonians lurk in the shadows... SAS is a great choice, especially for beginners. Unfortunately, there is a lot wrap your head around: 1) How link teams work 2) How to move with the SAS 3) How to go on a werewolf rampage. I usually tell beginners to play vanilla at first and move into the more complex rules one by one. I think your friend should start with the SAS, then move on to Cameronians and Galwegians. The basic Volunteer link with Grey HMG can be played quite simple and defensive in the beginning. If your friends wants to stick to Caledonia, he needs that link. Fortunately, it is quite cheap pointswise so he can focus on the other parts. Moving Caledonians is a bit tricky, I think. As for purchases, I recommend the following. (Order in importance of purchase; also stepping up with the learning curve.) 1) SAS double blister, its essential and will help in early low point games. 2) Cateran, simple to play model and will be used often. 2) Volunteer SWC pack, an essential for early games and the rest of the gaming career. 3) Highlander Grey HMG, because he is needed in the link. 4) Uxia to back up the SAS and annoy the hell out of you. 5) Cameronian. Now it is time to go on a rampage! 6) Galwegian warband, two packs if your friend is truly an arsehole. 7) Willy 8) Warcor. Once you got Willy, you also want to have a warcor to get an extra order... err no, of course to have someone who reports his great victories. 9) 112, someone has to fulfill the missions. I know, we don't do much healing in Caledonia. That should already be enough for the beginning. Most of the other stuff is not strictly necessary anyway.
