Caledonia is an excellent army. Maybe not for people learning the game, but for effectiveness and style. I play them a lot and love the army.

Yes, Caledonians lurk in the shadows... SAS is a great choice, especially for beginners.

Unfortunately, there is a lot wrap your head around:

    1) How link teams work
    2) How to move with the SAS
    3) How to go on a werewolf rampage.

I usually tell beginners to play vanilla at first and move into the more complex rules one by one. I think your friend should start with the SAS, then move on to Cameronians and Galwegians. The basic Volunteer link with Grey HMG can be played quite simple and defensive in the beginning. If your friends wants to stick to Caledonia, he needs that link. Fortunately, it is quite cheap pointswise so he can focus on the other parts. Moving Caledonians is a bit tricky, I think.

As for purchases, I recommend the following. (Order in importance of purchase; also stepping up with the learning curve.)

    1) SAS double blister, its essential and will help in early low point games.
    2) Cateran, simple to play model and will be used often.
    2) Volunteer SWC pack, an essential for early games and the rest of the gaming career.
    3) Highlander Grey HMG, because he is needed in the link.
    4) Uxia to back up the SAS and annoy the hell out of you.
    5) Cameronian. Now it is time to go on a rampage!
    6) Galwegian warband, two packs if your friend is truly an arsehole.
    7) Willy
    8) Warcor. Once you got Willy, you also want to have a warcor to get an extra order... err no, of course to have someone who reports his great victories.
    9) 112, someone has to fulfill the missions. I know, we don't do much healing in Caledonia.

That should already be enough for the beginning. Most of the other stuff is not strictly necessary anyway.

You might all remember that this thread was about a keen miniatures painter friend taking an interest in Infinity,

Here're some pictures of what he's done with them in a couple of short weeks - is it possible to hate your friends?

So in my opinion CHA is probably the one starter that I dont think is great for buying into the faction strengths.
Not only does it not have any good SWC platforms, but CHA sits in an effective Pts per Cost bracket that make it a pretty pricey army if you want to run it ruthlessly efficiently.

    For starters you buy Wallace.
Then you buy a box of galwegians, run2 Chainrifles, use the rifle Galwegian you have spare as a Dozer and the shotgun as a 112.

Then you actually buy the cateran, 1) because its a gorgeous model and 2 because Camo, Climbing Plus T2 snipers are legit funny.

That gives you over 100 pts of solid, multi option CHA.

So grab that Grey AP HMG blister and some freinds for him to rock around with, meaning a Vol SWC Box. the HMG is a bit of a wash, Ideally you want to get more of the Chainrifle+LSG profiles to give what is almost a HRMC for 60ish pts.

Finally pick up an SAS (The pistol makes an excellent FO mini) and a traktor mule box is a solid way to round out the list. (Katyusha runs with the Dozer)

You should wind up with this,

I agree with Daboarder that the new CHA starter is a bit questionable. For maximum effectiveness, you don't need a Mormaer nor a Grey with rifle. They can be useful, sure - but they are not my favourites. What I'd do with that starter is probably get the Mormaer HMG just so I can use my Grey and my Mormaer in a link - when I have 300 points ready anyway and I already got to the point that I want to try new things.

I don't think that Caledonia needs Traktor Muls, here I disagree. Certainly not at the start.

Get your friend ready for the Cameronian rampage. He sure is a good painter, so he will love the Cameronian old McMurrough.

You can find my tips on how to rampage here:

need, nah perhaps not, but SAS FOs are pretty bread and butter for midfield scoring, and for 11 pts and 1 SWC you can turn those FOs into attack pieces as much as scoring pieces. Thats why I reccomend them.

That being said, with CRAPs and Cameronians and even linked Vol Lgls, CHA really isnt hurting in the spec/guided options department, therefore they probably arent a requirement so much as a solid option. Certainly more than the Mormaer Haris in my opinion.

Then agian, For dropping the Kat and Dozer you could grab another Cateran and upgrade the SAS FO to Uxia

    There is also this.
    https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threa...-a-primer-on-caledonia-and-its-warbands.2037/
Its less about what to take and more about the basic principles you need to cover for the army to work (IE a strong range game to win the high ground and allow your troops to advance into existential threat range) and how to actually use it on the table (Such as running your warbands in pairs across combat groups so that they can cover each other as they advance)

It also has tactics on how to cover and diminish the inherent weakness in the lists, such as obvious Lts if you are concerned your opponent will make an assassination play before you have a chance to kill the assassin.

Agreed, SAS are bread and butter. Mormaer Haris is for playing around once you are bored with the usual lists.

I own Muls, but don't use them that much, especially not with Caledonia. They go a bit against the feel of the army I think. I don't recommend them to someone who is starting out. Remember that Retroengineering is gone.

Oh dont get me wrong, I LOVE the mormaer haris (normally without a grey personally) but I dont think its a great beginer tool.

Then again sounds like you think the same of the Katyusha haha :)

you love the Mormaer Haris? Please elaborate. I have used it for a little bit and thought it was a bit too expensive for what it is doing.

to me on paper they look bland boring and over priced. But every time i've run them they've sucked up so much firepower trying to shift them that its not funny, and they are tough enough that the loses you take doesnt drastically reduce their effectiveness with BS13 T2 out to 32 backed up by ARM8, even at B1 thats a threat nothing can ignore

they are also the only way to get a second B5 AP HMG on the table.

actually fitting them into a list...thats another issue, and part of why im looking back at the 2 HMG Vol core as a light defensive link for 16-32

I agree, you can get a lot of firepower on the table this way. This can be good in missions based on killing enemy. In the button-pressing missions and in any other variation I prefer to have a solid link for firepower and then as many cheaper troopers as possible to achieve objectives.

well, my philosophy is pretty well detailed.

I have however been working on a reactive CHA list, so far I've got a little nasty something for 300 pts that has been working suprisingly well, though its the kind of list that on paper I would expect most posters to hate.

It essentially revolves around a pair of core links, one in each combat group, and one focused on reactive the other active which gives the opponent bad choices regardless of who they fight :D

Panos main aro threat was a nisse sniper and my plan was to dice it down with the gray HMG link and then swarm up the board using smoke etc. I got the gray into a shoot out with nisse in a favourable range band in the first turn but the nisse rolled a crit and he just died. Then my caterans weren't enough to establish ranged dominance and i was pinned down for rest of game giving pano the win.

Bad luck I know but it did raise a question. The gray hmg link is CHA's best offensive ranged threat but we dont have much else. What do you do when it fails?

Uxia is an incredible offensive threat. I would have used her to take out the Nisse Sniper or any other longer range threats before even starting up the Grey HMG link. On a separate note, what were you doing with all those highlanders?

I had second turn so I couldnt set up Uxia anywhere near the nisse unfortunately.

four of the highlanders started out guarding wallace in a link team during opponents first turn before i switched to the volunteer link in my first turn. The others were on the flanks. The plan was to get them onto the opponents table half and kill stuff / block aros with smoke but they didnt end up getting there

I know it's a bit controversial, but I probably would have run the Grey core link with a Morm Haris link, personally, and left Uxia sitting next to something glass cannon-ish. It's usually a bad idea to reveal a camo in ARO, but if that Nisse Sniper is going to cause trouble, the threat of a shotgun to the face as soon as he spends an order is going to make him think twice.

Maybe ill try that with uxia next time, it seems risky but i can see how it will at least waste several opponent orders

It would be nice to have a second high burst shooter. Im coming from nomads where its easy to get more than one, so Caledonian list writing is a bit of an adjustment. I'll test mormaer harris too but it just seems like so many points.

Has anyone tryed scots guard second battalion with molotok, slow and shorter range gun but at least has camo to stack hit mods and isnt too expensive?

A Scots Guard camo with Molotok is excellent in theory. The speed of getting him into position is where I've seen him struggle.
