Hey guys, As stated in the title, I am a new player to both infinity and A!. I live in Virginia about an hour from Washington D.C. so I assumed it would not be hard to find some organized play. When I use the OTM though I come up with no events. None in VA, MD or WV. Do you guys have any advice? It's just frustrating that the only game I can play with ease is 40k.
Hello and welcome. You may wait a bit before having new IRL tournaments. Meanwhile, you can play online with the worldwide community on TTS for both games. Join the many discord channels to get in touch with the community ^^
The English Discord: https://discord.gg/bBtbnq5 Almost all the time there is at least one TTS event running and organized via this Discord server or the Spanish Telegram group. RL events are tricky. I don't expect them here in Germany before the mid/end of 2021 and maybe we even have to wait till 2022 until we see larger events.
Even here in New Zealand, where the virus is basically somebody else's problem, we aren't having a lot of face to face events.
Also, sucks to hear that people are still playing 40K right now. Unless everyone's wearing medical-grade respirators and sanitizing everything, that's not a good idea. TTS is great though. You can watch and learn from some great players worldwide. Also you don't even have to own the actual models to try out a wacky list or whatever.
Still can't find a game. Not even at my FLGS. I'll be honest I have no interest playing a miniatures game online. I'd be more willing to use standees before I got online to play a mini game. Painting miniatures is how I pay my bills so I most certainly would look down on playing with them via the internet. It's just a shame because you see the stuff on shelves, no ones playing it. Over the last 5 years I have seen very little involvement by corvus belli at any large table top conventions like GenCon, NovaOpen or even Adepticon. No involvement in any local shop in the D.C. area either. I am starting to feel like Corvus Belli real just wants to money grab from its kickstarters rather than improving on their player base. You don't play with minis on a computer...that's called Diablo.
Corvus Belli have had stands, seminars, tournaments and demos at Adepticon and Gen Con for at least 6 years now if not longer. Bostria and other marketing staff fly over for both and they bring early release and limited edition minis too. You're probably still not seeing events because we're still in the middle of a global pandemic. Multiple countries are going back into lockdown and people are still cautious about indoor events. The first big Infinity event for 2021 has recently been announced as the Salt Lake Showdown in Utah in June, which has announced both a vaccination mandate and a mask advisory.
Possibly you don't realize that CB is a small company located in Spain? They can't really send someone to run demos for you in DC. If that's something you're interested in you can ask your local store about it, or contact your local Warcor yourself. When I was a Warcor in the Portland area I was very active, and our current Warcor is even more active. I'd bet theres at least one active Warcor in the DC area who would love to demo the game for you. Just because you're not seeing it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. CB has had a well advertised presence at several large American cons for many years. You just missed it, I guess. And saying CB is just grabbing money from it's Kickstarters is ridiculous, and not just because they've only run one. And as people said before, a big part of the reason you're not finding games right now is the Pandemic. Infinity players are smarter than average, and that means most of us know not to get together to play games in public spaces during a viral outbreak. If you're actually interested in playing the game, for now try TTS. If you're absolutely dead set against that then wait until the pandemic is over like everyone else.
I'll take the troll. You haven't looked very hard. Corvus Belli started attending Gencon in 2012. Adepticon is 2017 at minimum, because our local WarCor was there at their booth demoing for the entire show. I find event announcements for NovaOpen going back to 2013. They're listed as a sponsor for NovaOpen as we read this. https://maphub.net/CorvusBelli/corvus-belli-warcors may assist you in locating enthusiastic players, although Facebook seems to be the platform of choice for most organizing.
There's definitely a D.C. Area Warcor, I looked it up when my wife was interviewed for a job there (that she sadly didn't get).
Check out RVA Infinity the Game and Tidewater Area Infinity Players on Facebook. Great local guys that will help you find events once games start happening again.
Was trying to play not troll. I attend GenCon, Pax, Adept and Nova. CB just started showing up to Nova and they can't even really bring in players. GenCon, Pax along with Adept CB's presence was minimal. My point was that every local game shop I'm in I never see people playing the games. Half do not even carry anything from CB. I did buy A! At my FLGS but one of the largest if not the largest in the DC metro area has no players and I'm the only reason they stock infinity because I paint and sell the minis. Hard to play a game with little to no support. If someone farts in a 70 mile radius of me a space marine or storm trooper shoots out.
@Sayloth I am not US based but I have heard and seen pictures of large Infinity tournaments by CB/Warcors/fans at GenCon and other events in the US. So I highly doubt your claim. By the way, the US market for Infinity is the biggest one for CB. However, Aristeia! is a different thing. Many things have been done wrong in the past concerning the marketing of the game. I won't go into detail BUT: If you want change, then start promoting the game at your local game store. It takes time and evenings where you sit there and have no one to play with but if you show at the store at the same time over and over again and give people the feeling that they don't buy into a dead game you will get attention. And the other thing: It is more a board game rather than a tabletop. So maybe you need to approach different people. But it is worth it. It is a great game and a great community. And CB cares A LOT about their games. However, they are a very small company compared to that Space Marine multimedia group.
Define "minimal presence" too. Because if you expected hundreds to thousands of players, well, yes, you're going to be disappointed. If I remember well, the last Gencon broke a record and this event is now competing with Interplanetario as the hugest event in the world and it was below 200 people (if my memory goes right). So, yeah, most of the events need preparation and don't grab that many players just because this game isn't as popular as 40k by a metric ton. The fact that the game is labelled as "a difficult game" in the memory of many doesn't help too, even if C1 did something about this.
yeah CB games suck for the TOs (an infinity table could cost a few hundred for a basic setup and thousands to look respectable Aristeia is much cheaper but less popular unbalanced and underdeveloped) and are not exactly super popular at least on the east coast. you could try to play some A! at the tabletop simulator(the mod is not supported but it is playable), it is a decent substitute until things go back to normal. PS: you could hit the events in NYC DC isn't that far
All of the Aussie events I've been to, the tables haven't all been the TO's responsibility. It's usually a large chunk of the players who will bring their own mats and terrain, and usually will do several tables worth. It's been that way since my first N2 tourney. My local group is cool, that amongst us, we can easily cover a 30 player tournament with enough terrain (5 or 6 of us can do easily 3-4 tables each and that includes transporting to and from the tournament.) That said, our events (in person) are on hold until we get enough people vaccinated and get the community cases down. The game stores are closed in my state. Sure, there's virtual, but it lacks a certain tactility, so I'll give those a miss.
