A new year just started so a new month did it to.
Let 2021 be full of fulfilled pledges.

    Rules:

    1) Post a picture of an unpainted/primed Corvus Belli miniature you pledge to paint.
    2) Paint it within the month, post your proof (PICS or it DID NOT happen).
    3) Rinse and repeat as much as you like.
    4) You can re-pledge a miniature next month if you didn't finish it.
    5) Enjoy and learn!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    5) Divierte y aprende!

Wow the new new Mirage-5 models look nice. And that Dogface is big. Is he any bigger than other Dogface models or around the same size?

As Maggie's done I can't paint anything else than her pilot.

As I try priming with gesso for the first time I made a comparison: unprimed, primed with too diluted gesso then dried with an extra layer.
I don't notice any detail loss so far.

@Koin-Koin That Gesso technique looks interesting. Was the effort worth it in your opinion?

Gesso on metal is tricky to get right. First, keep the brush damp, not wet. Do not thin the Gesso, and do not let the brush get dry... Ah, now you begin to see why I won't recommend it, even though it is a nice primer. I prefer white Gesso, since I've been using it as a primer for things since, er, uhm, Jimmy Carter was president.

Anyone pledge the Defiance set yet? C'mon, you know you want to. ;)

I've actually never heard of Gesso until now. What exactly is it anyway?

Gesso is basically primer for artists.
If I understand correctly it's some chalk powder mixed with a binder. It works on fabrics, wood... Almost anything (I've seen it used to repaint a mug).

I'm only starting with it so @Red Harvest is the one you must trust.

The main property seems to be what makes it both incredible for results and tricky to use on minis: it shrink a lot. I mean A LOT.

I had to do several retouch this morning. I think it's because I thin it too much. It is recommended to use it straight from the bottle (a tube in my case) or up to 80/20.

No, he's pretty much the same size. Even not quite as tall, due to his hunched posture.

Primer. In the past, whatever binder they had with some filler & pigment, mostly chalk as Koin said. Now it's mostly acrylics as "glue". One I got smelled like white PVA glue. No idea how the transparent one is made, maybe it's like matt medium.

Shrink / contract? Stretch sounds "reversed".

First time joining the painting group. Fairly new to painting too and slowly trying to improve with highlighting and freehand work.

I’m hoping to get uhahu and domovoi completed this month.

Gesso can be bought at any art craft store. It's used to prime canvasses for painting (usually 2-3 layers with sanding in between). I usually only use gesso when it's too cold or humid to use spray cans. If you want to use gesso use it on a test model first. The first time I did it I used it straight and glopped it on a Space Marine with plasma cannon. As Koin-koin said it shrank incredibly well but the thicker part obscured fine details somewhat. It wasn't bad, just that details are less sharp.

When I use gesso now I tend to thin it with just a little acrylic medium to help it flow and pay more attention to avoid big clumps. I also mix in a bit of black paint so I get a grey primer.

These two models were primed with gesso
