When throwing a smoke grenade with the targetless trait which is correct?

    Place template IMG_20190819_064207.jpg
    Measure range and resolve

    Or
    Select spot on ground IMG_20190819_064216_1.jpg

    Place marker to measure to
    IMG_20190819_064224_1.jpg

    Place template after measuring

Reading through the rules I can't find a definitive answer.

Your opponent need to have the template placed to ARO (to check who is under it, to check if his LoF goes through the template or not...)

Measuring only happend in the resolution phase, so after ARO declaration.

So you have to put the template before mesuring

My point is can I place and adjust my template like first example or do I pick my point and hope it covers the area I wanted like second example.

It would probably help to check the rules

    http://infinitythewiki.com/en/Template_Weapons_and_Equipment#Impact_Template_Weapons

    Requirements[edit]
    • Unlike Direct Template Weapons, Impact Template Weapons require an Attack Roll, using BS or the appropriate Attribute, to hit.
    • The user of one of these weapons must declare a main valid target, and that target is used as a reference to place the Template.
    • Place the Template down when you declare the Attack to determine who is affected by that Attack, as that might influence the possible second Short Skill and AROs.

I think the strictest possible reading says that you should nominate a point on the table first, then place the template (with no option to wiggle it). However, I don't usually bother with that degree of precision.

A rules-lawyer got after my group about it being pre-measuring to adjust the template. So you gotta pick your center point out first.

Assuming you don't adjust the template after placing it the first time, what is the practical difference between the two?

@RobertShepherd I would adjust it And see almost everyone do so. They place it exactly where they want then measure and roll. It matters when it comes to getting thinga specifically where you want. It's hard to draw diagrams but in some instances functionally it's a big difference.

You could throw a smoke grenade to a spot you assume blocked lof but didn't if you point to the spot. Just feels cumbersome.
