Aight, so here's the situation: Myrmidon A is poking his head out from behind a building. His buddy Myrmidon B is standing right next to him. Myrmidon C and D are elsewhere but in coherency, putting them in a full Enomotarchos fireteam (with Sixth Sense L2). A Marauder fires his Heavy Rocket Launcher at Myrmidon A, catching Myrmidon B in the blast. Both of them throw smoke grenades to block LoF to the attack (basically covering Myrmdon A). Both of these attack rolls will be FtF with the Heavy Rocket Launcher shot, but will only protect their user. Does this sound right?
Isn't this a slight rewording of the question you asked here? https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threads/using-smoke-to-protect-against-blast-damage.26006/
To make sure I’m being clear, I think only the primary target can use FtF smoke and the secondary will throw smoke as a normal roll.
Just to clarify, the way it's different is that Myrmidon B *does not* have LoF to the Marauder. So it's more a question about Sixth Sense than anything else.
If there is no LoF between the Marauder and Myrmidon then that means the Myrmidon is suffering an attack that does not require LoF. If the attack does not need LoF, then Special Dodge doesn't kick in.
The attack needs LoF to Myrmidon A. If it didn't, Myrmidon A wouldn't be able to Smoke Dodge. Technically, Myrmidon A is only hit because they're in the template as well; if Myrmidon B can't protect themselves then Myrmidon A shouldn't be able to either.
The Marauder needed LoF to attack Myrm A, so special dodge works. The Marauder did not need LoF to attack Myrmidon B, so special dodge does not work. And now we're going around the exact same circle as the previous thread.
That's N2 logic. In this edition you can lose the FtF roll agains the primary target but still hit someone caught in the blast.
B is attacked by the impact template rules. The impact template LoF cannot be blocked. Special dodge cannot prevent LoF to another model. Therefore: no face to face. Yes, this could be worded differently. But I wouldn’t rate it as high priority, this is an advanced interaction.
Thats where sixth sense kicks in (I think) to allow a BS attack. Since smoke is targetless he could place it within LoF to cover Myrm A.
He can cover Myrmidon A, but the only smoke that can cover/stop/impede the impact template is the FtF from A. B’s smoke does nothing to stop the blast template if the template is a success. A goes FtF, wins, avoids the hit. The Marauder loses the FtF but still succeeds, so the template is placed, catching B. B’s smoke does nothing to stop the impact template.
By that logic the primary target (Myrmidon A) couldn't protect themselves, either; the reason they're hit is they're under the template, and their smoke grenades would do "bugger all.:
OK so the lack of clear differentiation makes this an obvious case for needing a clean up of terminology (thats why you asked, I know). But I think there is an implied primary and secondary targets. the main target is the target of the BS Attack which requires LoF. Secondary targets (affected by the template) are only hit if the attack is a success. LoF is not required for the template to hit Myrm B, only that the attack is a success. Requirements Unlike Direct Template Weapons, Impact Template Weapons require an Attack Roll, using BS or the appropriate Attribute, to hit. The user of one of these weapons must declare a main valid target, and that target is used as a reference to place the Template. Place the Template down when you declare the Attack to determine who is affected by that Attack, as that might influence the possible second Short Skill and AROs. Effects The Template only applies its effect on each affected trooper if the Attack Roll is successful.
