I've been playing TAK for the last 6+ months and I'm finding it really hard to adjust to not having the pieces I'm used to. I crutch so hard on the Veteran Kazak AP HMG for raw firepower and the Spetsnaz HMG for edging out fireteams/whatever needs to die. In TAK, I can spam infiltrators, have multiple HMGs, close range weapons, warbands, answers to everything and still be sitting at 15-17 orders and not break a sweat. And then I'm building SEF and I have literally no idea what I'm doing. So let's think about what I'm trying to do. I have a small 8 player thing coming up, 300pts, Frostbyte, Tic Tac Toe and Engineering Deck. I think I can make one list for Frostbyte and the other list for the other two. Basically Frostbyte needs some specific tools (antimaterial ccw) and the other two kind of just need button pressing and area denial. I'm worried about dealing with stuff like the Kamau or other links. I think my answer to them is the Gwailo HRL (Albedo), my own link through a Dazer, or dropping smoke/white noise and ignoring the problem. I really also quite like the idea of using the Marksman Haiduk, as he's got a visor and Marksmanship like the Spetsnaz. So starting Tic Tac Toe and Engineering Deck, I'll add a Speculo Minelayer for zone control/sneaky crap. Shrouded for buttons, Malignos for buttons and he's got a Dazer. I'll probably go with a Nox core with T-Drone FTO and a EI Hacker and Q-Drone. Solo Sheskin to rampage like Achillies and some cheap orders. I'm kind of hoping Assisted Fire and a Dazer will get the job done. I can also drop a mine in front of anything that wants to ARO first turn (if I have initiative). Speculo Minelayer Shrouded FO Malignos KHD Nox CR Nox EI Hacker T-Drone FTO Mentor Lt BS Sheskin RF / Q Drone HMG 2 Ikadrons Taigha AP 300-5.5-10/3-1. So I think it'll be a Sphinx list. Which will be super garbage as I've played a Sphinx twice in Onyx ever. I'll probably just have one of the Nox be my datatracker, or the Haiduk and just play it safe. Don't have time for more detailed analysis now, but some tips: Gwailo is the go-to unit to deal with MSV AROs. Take it in Duo with M-Drone, move both into MSV trooper's sight. This will force him to ARO against M-Drone or Dodge, allowing you to shoot him with no return fire. HRL has bigger odds against Kamau sniper, if I remember correctly. Get Cadmus. It's super effective. Decoy/AD combo is extemely powerful, allowing you to land safely even after Dispersion, trip mines and Perimeter Weapons with Decoys, and landing in a sweet spot for Morpho-Scan. Both RF and KHD versions are great. If you're taking Sphinx get proper support for it. Caliban Engineer, some more FDL2/Infiltration units to create a screen your TAG can retreat behind, long range fireteam or Noctifier ML to further slow enemy down. Backup assault piece, like Q-Drone Plasma, will be useful as well.
Problem is, Gwailo is expensive in both cost and SWC. I was thinking about Cadmus, the disperson is huge. KHD anywhere forever. You're right, I probably need a Caliban or Dr Worm to follow the Sphinx about in case it gets hacked. I see your point(s).
- Gwailo isn't expensive mate, he are for now the best MSV2 in CA... 43pts and perma 2 SWC its so pretty sweet. - Caliban over dr.worm, that camo-engineer in forward are the key for all TAGs wants in CA, also you can link 1 g.servant with him, but the remote wan'ts to start on your deployzone and can cover the TAGs run. The cost from dr.worm+x1servant are 26pts, for 2 pts and alone specialist non-linked gains more stuff you get that excellent caliban profile to do this task.
Also consider the Caliban for your antimaterial needs. He's got D-charges and even with the -3 CC penalty he's still hitting on 20, so that's a guaranteed EXP+AP hit. But, generally speaking, it seems those 15-17 order type lists require either some massed Nox or 4-5 Taigha. I've been making some pretty comfortable lists with 5-6 major pieces, 3-4 support pieces, 1-2 order monkeys and 4 taigha. Generally sitting around 16 models, with the 4 taigha together in group 2.
