My dear JSA enthusiasts, I don't know if you have noticed, but CrazyKoalas have changed significantly with the coming of N4 and there is now an interesting tactic possible which involves Yojimbo, Baggage remote and CrazyKoalas. First of all, the rules that make it possible. Baggage In N4, any friendly Trooper can expand an Entire Order to use Baggage rule to replenish weapons/equipment with Disposable trait. You have to be within Zone of Command of the Baggage model. That's a huge improvement, in N3 you had to enter base contact. Zone of Control In N4 Zone of Control is a cylinder based around model with a radius of 8" reaching 8" down and 8" top from the model's Silhouette. Crazy Koala In N4 CrazyKoalas no longer move along their owner, they remain stationary after being deployed. In N4 you can no longer start with both CrazyKoalas deployed, you can only deploy one and only if you have a Minelayer skill. In N4 you deploy a CrazyKoala using a Place Deployable skill and you can field the CrazyKoala anywhere within Zone of Command of the owner provided there is a valid route to that spot (no matter how long). Now for the tactic: You need to place your Baggage model as close to the edge of your Deployment Zone as possible and deploy Yojimbo close to the Baggage model in a way his Impetous movement will not provoke any/many AROs and so that Yojimbo will be hidden from enemy models after that move. If enemy has no AROs to Yojimbo you can start using Place Deployable with Impetous move, otherwise you Smoke/Dodge. Either way this move should get your Yojimbo about 8" towards the enemy Deployment Zone. From that (hopefully safe or smoked) spot you safely place 2 CrazyKoalas 8" towards the enemy. Note that these CrazyKoalas can be as far as 17" from your deployment, so you can even engage models in enemy Deployment Zone. And the best thing is you can do this several times, because if you use up your both Koalas you can spend an order to get 2 fresh ones from the Baggage remote. Also remember that you can put your CrazyKoalas in relatively safe and hard-to-get-to spots, like roofs of buildings with stairs thatnks to how the Zone of Control works now. I know that this tactic seems rather order hungry (I would say it would work best if you use both Yojimbo orders and 3 regular orders to place 4 Crazy Koalas), but it gives us an answer to some pesky models we might have trouble, for example: superior ARO pieces we could have a problem with otherwise. This way if we deploy a CrazyKoala within 8" of them they will have to choose between shooting our advancing heavy Infantry or dodging a CrazyKoala elusive objective grabbers hoping to grab a smoked up scenario objective Parachutists/Combat Jumpers. One CrazyKoala can protect up to 16" of the table edge from Parachutists and rather large area from Combat Jumpers. Links. Staggered deployment of CrazyKoalas (deploying them every 8" from enemy link and then 4" apart) would either make enemy lose many orders trying to dodge them or make them sacrifice some models to clear the mines. What do you think comrades?
I missed that buff to baggage. NIce, don't even have to put it in danger. It's almost as if the reloaded koalas will leapfrog from the baggage to Yojombo to threatening the enemy DZ
Great thing is, you'll probably want an EVO Pangu in many cases anyway, to get Fairy Dust on your Samurai. This is just an additional layer of utility for the bot.
Exactly that! Most of my lists I have prepared for N4 have either a link of Heavy Infantry and Daiokai, or I focus more on Ryuken, skirmishers, REMs and O-Yoroi. Either way I want to field an EVO hacker for some support duties. And Yojimbo is rather cheap and can do much more than just set up mines at the middle of the field. But until now I really struggled with giving him something to do during the first round. Now the minelaying duty seems perfect for him.
I would even place one of the Koalas a during deployment. Then with the Imp-order: mov-deploy Entire order: refill Order: move-deploy Order: move-deploy Or is this wrong? Btw: who is using the entire order? Yojimbo or the baggage bot?
This is completely fine as long as you remember that that first Koala must be placed entirely within the Deployment Zone as per Minelayer rules. So if you want to protect your obvious Leutenant hiding in a building from ambush, it would be a good idea to deploy one Koala during Deployment Phase. Otherwise a Koala that far back from the objectives might not get triggered at all during the game.
OK. I tried to find the rules sections to confirm this tactic, but could not find the part, where it says I can place the Koala inside my Zone of Control. All I can find is the place deployable skill, which allows my to place the koala in silouhette contact during my move. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Putting my 2 cents in this topic. You Can also, as per my understanding, deploy yojimbo dismounted son he Can use minelayer to put a CrazyKoala down, as his impetuous start (you obviously deploy his bike in BtB with him) he Can then go on his impetuous biking as mounting Can be done freely at the start of a move skill. Might not be that useful (deploying CK in depZone) but it Can be a deterrent for parachutist/combat jumpers or annoying smiley faces. And you Can mix it with OP's tactic also.
Minelayer should be on the mounted Yojimbo profile, it's a confirmed bug in Army VII. The only bikes allowed to deploy dismounted are AI Motorcycles.
JSA..... LT.... hiding in a building?? as a side note crazy koalas are so weird and out of theme with the army now - I have a feeling the only reason there till on Yojimbo's profile and the O-yoroi is because they are sold in the box with them.
Oh, nevermind, i mean it works but not in the way i thought so it's alright i Guess. Thanks for the info !
Cultural borrowing in the realm of the emperor goes both ways. Hell, where do you think the name Yojimbo comes from? :)
speaking purely from a form-content point, I think there's a disconnect between the rules of crazy koalas now and army theme. a stationary deployment zone smart mine and an ultra-aggressive maniacal biker swordsmen don't exactly mesh.
Koalas are not restricted to the deployment zone, though. They can be thrown towards an enemy while charging them, aggressively and maniacally even :) They also gave Koalas to the Hulang, who are not quite sane either.
yeah, i dunno, seems like having smart mines that acted in concert with a raging motorcycle vs smart mines that have to be patiently hurled into a stationary place is less befitting of the character and the overall theme of hyper-aggressive bloody nose strikes. a good example of form-content gameplay is how ninjas and oni lack mines.
