MBH and Fiddler were added today, and were coincidentally also released today. So-Ra is being added on Oct 28th, coincidentally...
Not crap, just more of the same. Does an e/m mine profile justify a character? Characters are pretty limited in our faction, do we want them to bo be just like any other standard trooper? Exactly, it needs to be transformative. That's precisely why an HMG on her is not such a good thing. It will end being a substitute or a mere alternative to shangjesus or the spit jujak. Yujing has plenty people that shoots well and were not the kind of faction that solves everything on a BS scalade. A Hacker profile simply doesn't make sense. A character is either a hacker or not. They could have taken in diferent aproaches with little effort to make her an interesting option. Giving her a +3dodge would have been interesting towards defensive ARO control Giving her dogged would have been another way of making her a good and resilent attacking piece that cannot push buttons Superjump and +1B on his flamer would have been good to make her an unorthodox attack vector and a nice wilcard in between ye-maos or with... Other options go through providing her with rare weapons like grenade a launcher, vulkan shotgun, plasma anything, dropbears, wildparrots, jammer... But my problems with white banner are deeper than one character can chuck. WB doesn't feel the dirty tricks/gerrilla sectorial they've promised. Maye it could have fitted in an N2 mindset but in N4 it doesn't.
It works to theme, but needs to be played at 400pts. If you're actually leveraging their increased sectorial AVA the lists play out as you'd expect but SWC and point restrictions at 300 don't really allow for it.
Do the monks fit into that theme? They're a way to keep the list cheaper, but I can't tell if they synergize at all with a sneaky strategy - would love to take full AVA on them just to see what would happen.
Gameplay wise, they provide smoke and order efficient chain rifles that can also do some real damage in CC if left unchecked. Thematically, one of the major Shaolin temples is located on Huang Di. I really was hoping that WB would have provided more monk units (and teams for them!) to work off that theme. I would have appreciated Buddhists and skirmishers as opposed to the Shang Ji's side chick.
Taking 5 monks is a difficult choice regardless of what points level you play at, the big issue is 5 irregular orders kinda fucks up your turn potential and makes the combat groups awkward. This is why Varangians and Witch Soldier soldiers are arguably the two best impetuous smoke chuckers at the moment, being regular makes it alot easier to work with them in lists. Edit: Add Makaul to that list for the same reason, keep forgetting Tohaa exists. I still play multiple monks at 400 though if that's what you were asking, limited to two or three though. Thread discussing WB at 400 here if you hadn't seen it.
Varangians (Kosmo exclusive profile) are the real stand-out here, however. Disgustingly well optimized profiles.
The background on So-Ra is... well in my personal option, bad. They actually made her an unlikable character to me. If they went with storyline in the rules, your Lt. would also be considered targeted by the enemy. If she's a psychopath, they could have at least given Frenzy to get the cost down. Yes Frenzy can be ignored in a fireteam, Just like with Neema Saatar, Riot Grrls, Joan of Arc, Knights Hospitlar, Knights of Santiago, and I'm sure many more. But no. Yu Jing needs to pay more for mediocre. https://infinitytheuniverse.com/blo..._z6MDUtIF-gbfPUP8JHzytocATDoZcMlEpgwogJig_d68
I'm not sure if it's an intentional gag but her background reads like a shitty K-Drama. All over the place. Like her personality apparently.
Meh. Background story is more interesting than the profile and at least it doesn't foreshadow another Uprising. I'd maybe even rate the writing a bit better than average
She is not a rabid dog... "Functional psychopaths," as Dutton calls them, "use their detached, unflinching, and charismatic personalities to succeed in mainstream society." In other words, psychopaths often live as normal people with a few traits that make them different.
Not the finest depiction of mental illness I've ever seen. Not the worst either, I guess. Still, I suppose this does rank below Fiddler's on the Kasym scale of shitty fluff written by Gutier, so I guess it's okay. If Gutier really wants to write unit fluffs he should stick to the best of the bests awesome ultimate soldier style of fluff, its trashy as fuck, but at least he can do it.
I was not particularly blown away by the model or the profile, but that little blurb made the character somewhat more interesting to me.
As a fan of K-Dramas, I am glad of the narrative they have given her. They love characters like that in the shows and it totally fits the world of Infinity. The writer definitely did some homework on general K-Drama tropes. K-Dramas are also super popular right now and Netflix's Squid Game has broken streaming records. I am happy that they have expanded the narrative to include a Korean character that has the popular K-Drama soap opera feel.
Ok sure. Well they have them everywhere else so why can't Yu Jing get one? PanO, Haqq, Nomads, Aleph, Ariadna, Tohaa. They all have Frenzy troops that make them cheaper and then allowed to join a fireteam then then ignore that skill!
I'd just like their model releases to match their profiles. The disconnect is getting a bit annoying. I'm also salty that we get yet another marksman rifle model and they refuse to sculpt the marksman rifle.
And none of them in that box gets a Tinbot! Though that makes me think they might surprise us with either a alternate arm or a profile change.
Agreed. PanO Fusilier Indigo Richard Quinn's backstory is written better in my opinion. Being that he started out full of zeal for his nation while thinking that his work as an Indigo would benefit his countrymen. After years of service his idealism is dead though he still continues to complete his missions in order to preserve the PanOceania way of life for the citizens of the Hyperpower. https://human-sphere.com/index.php?title=Richard_Quinn In other ways he is a man that does bad things but you don't hate the guy but feel sorry for him. The Korean lady So-Ra's background doesn't do that to me. It makes me dislike her in the same manner I dislike Mira Ashcroft & the Nazarova Twins to name a few. Characters who's profiles can go to more likable Infinity OC's the staff at Corvus Belli could create. Though the tidbits about the Korean Chaebol Royalty were very interesting. It has helped push me to finish writing the backstory of a Korean character of mine. Basically a Chaebol Prince, which I hope to post the character's summary on the forum soon. At least reading So-Ra's fluff got my brain juices flowing in that regard.
