There’s always talk in the Yu Jing threads about the Hulang being ok or just bad. What do people using him in Dahshat think so far?

I’ve only used him once and he was taken out pretty fast. So I can’t really say how he is. On paper it seems like he could be put to better use in Dahshat but when you have CC monsters like McMurough or Togan, why would you take him for CC? 2 Liberto can be better mid-field skirmish. Hunz and Zhencha kind of have the midfield specialist locked down.

I'm not really sure I like the fig coming out. Body isn't bad but hate the skull head. I'm thinking of using a Igao for him just for the sake of having another NA2 guy.

I think he's a good way to add more beef to your midfield, and he's at his best when he's supporting a lot of other skirmishers. One thing he does do is free up one of your Hunzakuts to be a non-FO and focus more on dealing damage. He also makes a very solid Datatracker since he starts up the field and doesn't have to sacrifice a camo state. The Hulang's a part of one of my favorite all-comers Dahshat list:

I am pretty well convinced that the combi + LFT is the better of the two profiles, as it gives him a lot more offensive and defensive options rather than being yet another SMG boat. Not many things want to just waltz past a flamethrower, so he's quite capable of holding a corner against an aggressive rambo. It also gives him a much better shot at freeing himself up without needing help from an outside source. Multiple FOs can give him targets for E/M grenade spec fire, and smoke from whatever source (in this case, the 112) allows him to use his CC to good effect.

All that said, he is fragile for his price, and he's definitely something you should take to support an already solid midfield rather than as the core of your frontline. He kinda wants cluttered terrain to play with to make best use of his kit, so there are some tables where he'll have a bit of trouble. But if you need a solid generalist who can fill in the midfield whenever needed and cover/complement any weak spots that develop, the Hulang can definitely deliver.

Kestrel is pretty much spot on.

IA doesn’t take him because there is no smoke support ... dashat has that.

YJ doesn’t take him cause they have WAY better units for his role.. heavy infantry with marker states, Dashat doesn’t really, well we have the zencha.

His point cost is actually what mostly makes me skip him, Dashat can clog the midfield with 6 cammo tokens for 58pts and 2swc.

I like the idea of combining him with the 112 it kinda fixes both his problems, smoke and healing out of no wound incap.

I definitely agree that the combi+LFT is the better profile once you add smoke you can do intuitive attacks on th active turn, roast bad FTf rolls and the like.

I am going to try this list to use him myself it’s super trolly

He definitely has Awesome Datatracker written all over him, of either the offensive or defensive sort. If a tourney had 2-3 DT missions, this guy would be in my list(s).

I’m going to try taking him more in Dahshat. He has so much more to back him up here rather than IA or YJ.

I play JSA and I have to say; never underestimate how good E/M grenades are. Hulang spec fires them on a 9 within 8". Thats a lot of potential to wreck some high tech toys.

I intend to use the Combi-FT Hulang over the next week as it seems like a nice tool box unit. I like the Zencha (TACTICAL PONCHO!) but it seem a little fragile.

I intend to give the both a whirl soon.

It’s funny. I think the Hulang runs into a lot of problems in IA, but actually has a solid place in Dahshat. Typically, I don’t love forward deployed/infiltrating units that lack a marker state. Especially those that are hackable. The exceptions to this (Moran and Gangbuster to name two) have some kind of insulating defense. In IA, the only camo marker that will be near the Hulang are Zhencha, which are expensive and it is rare to see more than one or two.

In Dahshat, however, the ablative defense that is Hunzakuts and minelaying Libertos means that there is a layer of defense between the Hulang and any aggressors. In an ideal world, there would be a Ninja KHD in the roster to help protect the Hulang, but two Libertos is damn good.

The reason I think the layer of defense is so important is that a markerless model standing in the midfield unsupported is little better than wasted points. Consequently, I think the Hulang can do very well in vanilla Yu Jing as well.

I actually like Hulang's visual design. It's like they got someone new in the art department who really likes Doom games and decided to make a Chinese Doomguy model.

I'm death colours; bone and black for mine.
There's something thuggish and almost tribal about the Hulang. Even amongst the morally ambiguous IA its got a reputation for being a nasty piece of work.

Imagine how diabolically evil one working for Dashat would be!

Also I think in Dashat he would work well with the Assault hacker Zencha and Hunzkanut. That's a lot of board covered by three guys.

I think Dahshat loves the Hulang. The Hulang is a violent midfield skirmisher, who wants to be hunting other light troops in CQB, getting into enemy backlines if possible, exploiting gaps etc. He can grab objectives and with Libertos around to provide camo and mines, he's not needed to do that job. With most Dahshat stuff being pretty cheap, you can put loads of orders into him as well.

I think also if you keep him close with a Liberto minelayer buddy can be really helpful too. Then there's a lot of smoke chuckers to assist as well.

I want to try this just for the hell of it. Using the fab 4. Hulang, MrMurder, Togan, and a Liberto.
