When the JSA army pack was first announced, I fell in love with the models. But there were enough local players who were getting on-board that I wasn't so keen on pumping out yet another JSA force for the meta to play against. Then Ikari was announced and the plan was back on. I purchased the army pack, traded off the JSA models that I couldn't use in Ikari, and set about buying up the rest of the models I needed for an army. At the same time, I was acutely aware of the number of half-finished projects I had lying around. I have a habit of painting specifically the models I need for a given tournament, then leaving the rest lying around silver-surfer style for years. Usually that painting happens in a flurry of activity 1 to 2 weeks prior to the tournament. So, with this Ikari project underway, I decided to commit to a play-it-painted mentality (which also fit well with my desire to paint models separate from their bases for the first time in my life). I purchased up the majority of the models I needed, and squirreled them away until I could get underway with them. Cut to 2 weeks ago (more than a year after I picked up the JSA army pack). I finally start the building and painting process for the army. Initially I'm focusing on a specific list (which happens to contain 18 models - cause Ikari). I plan to use these during at least the next two to three events coming up, and I'm in the unique position (at least for me) where I can put out a bit of tabletop quality painting progress, and stumbling through my first few games with the faction. My question though; does anyone care? What would the wider Internet like to see? I'd like to keep my motivation up for the project, and tracking my progress over time in a public forum seems like a pretty standard way to do it. Edit: painting progress as of 17/7/19
I'm interested to see it. What color scheme are you planning on going with? I was thinking of doing mine in the blue with orange trim from the Uprising artwork.
Always curious to see other people minis paint jobs, conversions and so forth, Ikari and NA2 in general is a great excuse for a project. I use shikami as my tanko for instance (shikami have so much more style). Converted up a ragik to act as a yuan yuan (shotgun/chain rifle swap). Might provide some inspiration for the next project.
I'm going with a bit of a Pirate theme. Every guy is painted differently. Only the bases tie them together. What i've done so far is here.
I've gone with a muted, earthy scheme. A dull yellow and various browns, which u thought might not pop enough but I've come to really appreciate with my first finished models, Scarface and Cordelia. I might revisit the electric lights on the TAG in future, but I'm going to wait until I have more of the army finished to see how it all looks together Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Currently I have some space samurai and ninja in the painting queue. Nakadai is a bit further along since this photo. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
And a bit more work. Calling the ninja and Scarface pilot done. Next up is my trial tanko and a daiyokai. Plus all of the yuan yuan Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
First space samurai completed. Working on the Daiyokai next. I plan to post the list that I'm aiming towards painting up, but too much of a hassle on mobile [emoji23] will get there eventually though. Group shot will be on the way at some point too. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Calling the Daiyokai done, but I'm not as happy with how he turned out as the other models. I don't think I'll put that much yellow on a model again, as it doesn't spread well over a large surface. Luckily there's only one Daiyokai to do! Also, aforementioned group shot. Not bad for 2 weeks work, considering I often go months between painting models. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Thanks I've been getting a bit of feedback locally that the yellow looks a bit washed out/saturated. I agree, but I actually quite like it! I think it provides a pretty stellar contrast to the dark green/brown tones. Next up on the painting queue is the Yuan Yuan Drop Squad(TM) including an EVO Hacker for optimal droppage. Here's the list that I'm planning on getting painted up. I'm not sure it's the most effective list yet, but painting these pieces gives the most solid core to then play around and add additional pieces over time. So I played a game (proxied the models, cause they're still all on the painting table) against TJC. Biotechvore :/ I'm really inexperienced with running large numbers of irregular troops - the other armies I've played to date are CA, Aleph and SAA. I didn't find it too daunting, but I did lose track of which YYs were tied to which order pool over the course of the game, so I'm going to need to pay close attention to that over the next few months until it becomes muscle memory. Biotechvore didn't really help me play the list as intended though. As I had to spend a bunch of orders getting my defensive core team up the table, I didn't get the chance to try alpha striking with the Rui Shi. Luckily all four YYs managed their Phy -3 rolls to get up the table during deployment. I landed two in the centre of the table, and the other two walked in from each edge. It was a relatively narrow loss, but that's mostly thanks to the Ninja who completed all three Classified Objectives in the scenario (Data Scan, Inextremis Recovery, Secure HVT). I've decided to make a few changes to the list as a result. Ikari Horde v2 GROUP 1 - 7 3 4 KEISOTSU (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10) KEISOTSU (Forward Observer) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10) KEISOTSU Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 9) TANKŌ Missile Launcher / Pistol, Monofilament CC Weapon, Shock CC Weapon. (1.5 | 20) TOKUSETSU EISEI Doctor (MediKit) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14) YÁOZĂO Electric Pulse. (0 | 3) GROUP 2 - 6 1 3 NINJA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device) Tactical Bow / Pistol, DA CCW, Knife. (0 | 29) YUAN YUAN Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 9) TANKŌ Flammenspeer, Contender / Pistol, Monofilament CC Weapon, Shock CC Weapon. (0 | 23) TANKŌ (Fireteam: Haris) Blitzen, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Monofilament CC Weapon, Shock CC Weapon. (0.5 | 24) BRAWLER Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) Submachine Gun / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 17) BRAWLER Lieutenant Rifle + Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 16) PANGGULING Hacker (EVO Hacking Device) Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 25) 6 SWC | 300 Points I wanted to squeeze in another brawler so that the lieutenant didn't need to rush up the table (not that it got him into any trouble in this game). Having the four 55mm bases wasn't too bad, but I can see it being a problem on other tables, or against opponents with decent MSV2 cover, so I've dropped one desperado. And finally, I needed to free up points for another specialist to help cover the Classified spread, so we're down to three YYs in order to fit the Tokusetsu. This left one point to up the extra brawler to the assault hacker
Really like your alternate colour scheme. Is dyokai based on that yellow paining that floating around the net (from this site originally if I recall)?
I like it too. From the images they look like a nice warm cream and it really pops due to the dark colors. Nice contrast.
Thanks! I haven't based the scheme on anything other than the colours of the Ikari faction symbol. I'd be keen to see that daiyokai image though if you can find it. It's mostly P3 Moldy Ochre. There won't be too many models with as much yellow as the daiyokai. I wanted to differentiate the JSA/samurai themes from the merc themes, so the druze and other mercs will be more similar to Scarface and Cordelia above where yellow is just the splash colour.
