Can I vault up on a parapet (on the second story of a building) to get better LoF and just move back down to the floor? A player is adamant that it is against the rules and someone else pointed out that it says "over" in the movement rules. Reading the movement rules on vaulting I don't see a problem with this but wanted to ask around.
Do you mean a situation when a model in theri 1st short skill moves to/over a building's edge (remaining partially supported, as the movement rules permit), then moves back (as to be fully supported at the end of movement? And possibly attacks in their 2nd short skill? I'd say it is legal. Same as moving on a walkway that is narrower than your base (but at least half as wide as the base), assuming you end your movement on something that fits your entire base. In N3 we had "lean out" action that had an equivalent effect, it got removed in N4 - because, as I see it, the current movement rules made it redudnant.
Not really, since your base have to be supported you cannot do that. What I'm talking about is the exception of Vaulting. The rules are clear that you can vault over a piece of terrain, a wall or parapet, that cannot support your base - as long as you do not end your movement there. This doesn't cost any extra movement but means your Silhouette goes "up and over". Possibly giving LoF to enemies that wouldn't otherwise see you. My question is - can you still do this vault and go up but not over to increase your hight - when you cannot land on the other side (by being on top of a building). Essentially just moving forwards a fraction of an inch and back again.
Ah. I'd say, it is the same rules logic. You can't stay there, but you do end fully supported. And it is a part of your Short Movement Skill. Your 2nd Short Movement Skill remains your call. In short, yes, still legit in my eyes.
I agree with @Errhile as long as the start and end of the movement end up in a fully supported position it is legal.
The counter argument I'm getting is that in the rules example of Vaulting you can clearly see the legal move when bypassing a piece of terrain - and the illegal move when you cannot stand your base down (in silhouette hight) on the other side. Since you cannot set down your base on the other side of a parapet (on a building) it isn't legal.
I don't interpret it that way. It is not "end your movement on the other side of an obstacle in a fully supported position", merely "end your movement through an obstacle in a fully supported position". The side of an obstacle having nothing to do with it. Let's consider a different situation: I do Short Movement, with a low obstacle (i.e. one that can be Vaulted over, rather than Jumped / Climbed over) in my way. Due to terrain layout, I can't /don't want to end the Move fully supported on the other side of it (because, for example, it would provoke more AROs than I want to face). I however have enough Move (for example, I'm a 6-2 fast mover, say, a Mobile Brigada) to get to the point I want to (which will be "perched on top of the obstacle") and still move back to a fully supported position. It would be illegal for me to end my Move on top of the obstacle (as there's not enough space there to fully support my 25mm base). But go there and back? After all, it is fully legal to move to a corner, peek out (and generate an ARO) then get back into full cover in the same Move action. Including falling Unconscious / Dead (from said ARO) in the safety of the Total Cover. And, oh yeah, use your 2nd Short Skill to Attack.
