    Hey guys, getting my bearings with Tohaa, played only one game, read a lot, now trying to put things together.

    Take a look at this, please:

    The general idea is obvious - two HMG Triads, fueled by the Makaul's mobility and shielded by his grenades (BTW, does he get B+1 on them?). The apparently classic Gao Rael sniper triad. A lot of Orders preserved thanks to the Triad linkage, enabling me to fuel a Kiel-Saan rampage as well.

    Sukeuls, Gao-Rael and Kiel-Saan would get the Symbiomates to enhance their survivability. The Krakot and Liberto are there just for the lulz and as annoying filler - since the Kaeltar will be watching the backzone, a few more orders for those boys can make things a lot more fun ;)

    The paramedics are obviously there to heal and click stuff in ITS missions once they get there.

    Seems close to the traditional "gun-triads" approach I've been using on and off since starting Tohaa, waay back with their original roster in N2.

    One thing I'd suggest right off the top of my head is that I would swap the Gao-Rael into group two to link with either the two Kaeltar or a Kaeltar and one of the Kamael. It is useful to have guns in both order pools, in order to be able to spend group two's orders on a sweeping action to support group one. The Gao-Rael is much less likely to move than either of the Sukuel and so better suits the role of a semi-mobile gun piece. It's also your best ARO piece, and if used in this role, would be better in the second group to help maintain a full primary group.

    Yes the Makaul gets +1 grenade. Note that if used in ARO they must both target the same location - that threw me when I was first starting.

    As a new player, I think that you should look into a few profiles that I have found support this type of list. The Clipsos Forward Observer, Kaeltar symbiobomb, Neema and the Chaksa Auxiliar have all been standouts when I've played this type of game.

    Gun-teams are both mobile and immobile, powerful and vulnerable at the same time. They are order efficient, bringing tools to clear a path, but starting in the DZ and being risky to bring forward. They hit hard with their pointman as long as the triad is alive, but they have a bigger footprint and more blind spots than solo units and often that pointman is supported by very squishy models that are grouped in close proximity to the same threat.

    A clipsos lets you take objectives with a different type of mobility and an expendibility that these triads do not have. It starts somewhere they do not. It approaches from angles they don't get and using a marker state they do not have. If counterattacked and destroyed, you lost a single order and 25 points, not three orders and 50+ points. I usually take two, one in each group, for a similar reason as to why its good to have a gun in each combat group.

    Neema is an alternative to the Kiel-san. She fills the same role he does - a midrange gun that gives the list a non-Makaul based way to attack in CQB or the enermy deployment zone. What she does that the Kiel-san does not is go into a triad. When you have two (or three) triads and a single strong solo piece, often that solo piece sits by itself in the deployment zone and does nothing. Neema can come along with one of your triads and fill that role in a more order efficient way. While she is there she is also an elite symbiobomb host and deters CQB with her nanopulsar or 3 wounds.

    The Chaksa is a great way to get the order count up while covering your DZ from many types of rush. Makaul can do a similar job, but at the cost of breaking their triads if the opponent trades. I legit feel naked if I don't take at least two of these or of Kaauri Sentinels to help mitigate types of alpha strike.

    Symbiobomb Kaeltar are a bit of an odd choice. For a long time, I never looked past "invulnerability" (or mega-durability nowadays I guess). But shit man, having either ARO-super jammer to deter CBQ approaches to your fireteams, a white noise zone to crap on MSV overwatch, or in particular the Pandemonium pheroware ability to give you an absurd degree of lethality against a high value target up close, the bombs are simply incredible. They just keep performing well, giving all sorts of options to a triad that has "move, shoot, punch, smoke" as its go-tos. Once I switched to a bomb and a mate my lists felt very tactically inflexible just running two bombs.

    Thanks for the thought-out reply! :)

    I've gave it some of my own thought, came up with this. I kinda like the mobility and aggression of the three core triads and order efficiency in them. Left Gao-Rael to snipe from 2nd group, he's got enough orders to work with and if a triad dies, I can always toss them over to 1st Group, since I have 5 Command Tokens thanks to Neema.

    Thanks for the like, mate. I'd love to hear if that's just an encouragement like or did you specifically like something in my concept? Am I heading in the right direction? Pretty clueless in Tohaa, only minimal Ariadna experience with Infinity at all previous to that. I've just started digging into the LonelyArtichoke tactics articles on their blog. I love the models, I'm a decent painter and a crap player, so any feedback or comment will be appreciated :D

    I think you're heading in a really solid direction and I would definately put that most recent list on the table. I can think of things I might tinker with but the core concept as a medium order count, focused list seems like it should work.

    Unless you're building specifically for supplies you can do some nip and tuck work to squeeze in a delegate, which is basically a free regular order given how little tohaa use command tokens (and that you've got five of them thanks to neema), as follows;

    Thanks, I'm a bit embarassed because I've actually come up with the "fuel a Triad with Makaul's two orders" and "make it 2-3 Triads, steamroll each down the table throwing Eclipse around at Burst 2" and then I've read LoneArtichoke's stuff and seen that it's been played like that since forever >_>

    Not sure what you mean by "supplies"? One of ITS missions? Not really familiar with those, aside from basic expectations of "have Specialists up the table to click antennas / DA or antimateriel to destroy antennas".

    I also assume that you mean using Command to turn Irregular orders into Regular? Fewer tokens to reinforce Group 1 with, but yeah, I see that. Wouldn't it be better though to not have to use that for that Group and place the Delegate in Group 2? This way I already have 10 Regular orders and need to use Command only if I need to fuel whichever Group the Delegate ends up in the end. It also seems more economical to just use 1 CT and permanently toss one of the backyard boys into Group 1 (Chaksa, Kaauri, etc.) and keep doing it over and over, instead of paying 1 CT every turn for the Delegate? Unless I'd have to break up the last Triad or was unable to move it wholesale to Group 1?

    I've played my first game (four antennas, control quarters, click and/or destroy them) in a very Ariadnan spammy way, without much understanding how Triads work and what can be done with the models I had. I've been unaware that I couldn't destroy antennas turn 1 and wanted to alpha strike my opponent's ones (chose to go first) with this, at the same time oversaturating my backfield with Sensor Chaksas and Kaauri biometrics (which actually worked and my opponent decided not to infiltrate past his half of the table - he played Dashat and had both a Hunzakuts and Saito Togan). Unfortunately he explained the nuance to me in the first orders of my 1st round and I had to adjust on the fly which didn't end well (lost 9:2 after LoL and Retreat at the end of Round 2, but I clicked two antennas and killed Saito, Hunza and one more model). His 5-man HMG drone link rolled over me hard :(

    This is what I used, once again - I've found 5-man links unwieldy for me so far (both deployment and movement, it's still a bit much), didn't yet adjust to using them in Ariadna, so I chose to forgo anything aside from a stationary sniper Triad which was pretty obvious to me (the Kumotail actually healed the Gao Rael and attempted a Hail Mary shot at an unconscious Viral CCW Makaul mid-table who would've been quite a threat (the opponent also had McDoge there, yeah).

    Hugely appreciate the feedback, @RobertShepherd and apologies for rambling on :D

    Don't be - everything old can be new again. It's actually a reasonably fresh list idea at the moment.

    The Supplies scenario is a button-push scenario with a big advantage for paramedics specifically. But if you aren't playing it, forward observers are just as good (and cheaper, and can ARO with flash pulses).

    Yep, I mean turning the delegate's irregular order regular every turn. I put the delegate in group 1 mostly so I could put the clipsos in group 2. Being in group 2 helps conceal it (since a 9 model group sort of telegraphs a hidden model), and also infiltration means a clipsos is well positioned to attack with fewer orders. The delegate could be in either group just fine.

    De nada :)

    I've considered being cheeky when I'm NOT taking a TO camo infiltrator like Clipsos and, since I'm working in threes already, just making a 9-order group to throw an opponent's assumptions of an "obvious Clipsos" who'd he'd have to keep working around, while having more orders for the Triad or something chunky in Group 2 :P

    How would you adjust the above general list concept to the premise of Unmasking? That's the next scenario in the FLGS campaign. I'm thinking Ectros / Neema + mate as Datatracker (in Triad), for survavibility and identified HVT removal and mopping up enemy Decoys. Other than that I have few ideas, just FO / Paramedics in Triads to push forward and click stuff, as above. Maybe actually stick CoC Kaeltar as click-Specialists in these Triads to save points on filler and have more for the Kaauri / Chaksa "early detection and defense system".

    The 8" (each side of "equator") exclusion zone forces me to stick to FD1 or chancing Infiltration rolls (with a huge potential payoff).

    I'd run the list I proposed above but exchange the Clipsos and Delegate for another Chaksa auxillar flamethrower, and a preceptor with surda symbiobeast. The preceptor actually makes a surprisingly great datatracker thanks to his massive speed (just don't let the beast accidentally get the kill on the enemy HVT - but also feel free to still pick Neema) and you don't want the infiltrator clipsos nearly as much in that scenario.

    Nice, thanks :)

    I've also thought about using Specialists I've pushed ahead to synchronize with the detected Civvies and CIVEVAC them away from the enemy. Can a Triad use CIVEVAC or would that break the link?

    It would break the link, but so far in my experience CivEvac is a very limited skill in unmasking compared to setting up a more active defence.

    @RobertShepherd
    Inspired by this [ https://www.thediceabide.com/blog/2019/12/11/a-fresh-look-at-airborne-depl ], I went this way, my mind geared towards Unmasking and other such missions. One jumper, a Specialist with AD4. Can click, can kill unmasked HVT, can destroy antennas. Tossed the flamer Chaksa over to Gr1 since I want to hold him back in Reserve and not jump Turn 1 and not starve the order pool that will most likely take a -2 Order hit anyway (unless he generates hist order to the Pool before deployment?).

    Plan is to either jump Turn 1, from Reserve, so I know the enemy deployment - or Turn 2, to be able to click and then D-Charge antennas and deny the enemy; or kill the enemy HVT and their decoys once revealed (click an enemy antenna myself, reveal and kill would be a sweet combo!).

    I lose the Clipsos and Delegate from your format and get the jumper - but I don't have to commit to a spot like I do with the TO camo. Avoiding ARO on entry will be an issue though.

    Thoughts?

    Remember that unmasking has an exclusion zone, which you can't drop into. This makes the Gao-Tarsos a medicore button pusher in the mission, thanks to it's 4-2 MOV in active symbiont state (not great when it has to land/walk in so far from a button).

    The main advantage of the Gao-Tarsos for tohaa is the extent to which it's an off-meta pick. It's very rarely taken because we have little synergy with it (no good models to put up Assisted Drop for example), but that can make it surprising, which can be very effective. On the two most recent occasions I've played against one (which is to say, I've played against one exactly twice since January this year), I got thoroughly surprised by one turning up on a flank I hadn't defended because I'd assumed my opponents wouldn't play drop troops.

    I think generally I'd advise people experiment with Gao-Raels more once they've got a good grounding in tohaa's more standard and consistent troops, but if you're enthusiastic for it, it doesn't hurt to give it a whirl.

    The Gao-Tarsos is not cheap, but despite it I consider it to be the best Parachuist in the game thanks to its combination of "unhackable 2 wound model" + CD12 + Specialist option. You can land it where you need it, take one wound if you can't avoid the ARO's and still take the objective or kill enemies.

    Unless being a specialist is critical, I prefer the Combined Army Fractaa. Its stats feel better loaded across the two profiles, and it has a nanopulser. Plus it exists in an army with reliable supportware, so it can optionally risk the drop roll, which the Gao-Tarsos basically can't outside of Firefight.

    This isn't really a slight on the Gao-Tarsos, though. The Fractaa is a very good unit.

    The problem with the Fractaa is that she's a little more fragile, because in order to get to ARM 2 BTS 6 she needs to survive one hit first, while the Gao-Tarsos has ARM 3 from the start. Also, her specialist option is hacker, so she is also hackable in return (with WIP 12!).

    The plus the Fractaa has over the Gao-Tarsos is that the "shooty" profile comes with a Spitfire instead of a HMG, so it's easier to came in from a flank and start killing troopers in her good range band, while the Gao-Tarsos might find that his targets are too close for that approach.

    @RobertShepherd
    What's the deal with the +1 SWC Neema in Army? It doesn't seem to add SWC or expand the range?

    I have a 4.5 SWC list, add her, there's no change, add an HMG Ectros (2 SWC), the list is now invalid though it's technically at 5.5 SWC. Does it need to be manually taken into account? Am I doing it wrong?

    EDIT: OK, I'm a dummy, apparently it just got bugged and needed a reload of Army. Now it verifies with 6+ SWC used.

    @RobertShepherd This is what I'm most likely going with after all for Unmasking tomorrow. Decided not to use a infiltration / airdrops this mission due to the mission exclusion zone. I will need to push hard with the triads and having two high volume of fire (HMG, Spitfire) Sukeul there, each of them with a symbiomate over the Symbiont, will help that a LOT.

    I'm also considering which is better a 2W HMG Ectros or a 1W Sukeul + Chaksa. Both can Triad, both can get a Symbiomate. Technically the mimetism + 1 Order trumps 1W, but with Total Immunity ARM9/BTS9 on the first hit that additional wound is suddenly MUCH better than it'd be on its own.

    What's the value of placing a Tagmaa Schemer into a throwaway Triad (say, with two Kamaels), making them look like something stupidly scary, say another HMG Ectros? I initially thought about lane blocking with it, as if it were a Sniper or HMG. I'm not trying this here because Tagmaa is not a Spec, but this could be a nice misdirection, too.

    I also know that I will be fighting Morats, so was thinking about bringing a Krakot Renegade as a special fluffy middle finger :P
