I asking quite possibly a very simple and basic question.

However...Templates when placed on the table are Three-Dimensional or are they 2Dimensional with possible ways of placement?

I once heard that Templates were Volumetric, and even found some dimensions for Circular Templates. Thus making the chain rifle’s Template actually pretty long and broad.

    Does anyone know?

All templates are tridimensional. Some of the circular templates go as a cilinder, others as a sphere (or semisphere).

Yes, they rotate in 3D, and can be projected from anywhere from the (3D, cilindrical) Silhouette of the firing model. So yes, you can project a template over a fallen ally to impact a non-prone enemy behind.
