Sun tze + wu ming core possible?

    Hi !

    Has anyone created a competitive list using wu mings and sun tze in limited insertion ?
    I always think in it but can't come with a good list.

    Help appreciated !

    I would think so. I think it will do better at some scenarios than others. Did you have a mission in mind?

    I don't see why not. You can swap the kanren for some MadTraps if you want more midfield presence and the mission is less shooty, and then swap the Ninja for a Sophotect if you roll that way. Find a point somewhere else and you can add a Yaozao (which you probably want to do.)

    But I think is a sin not use sun tze specially in l. Insertion.
    But I couldn't think in a good list with him.

    @meikyoushisui's list seems to be a good all comers sort of list. I'm kind of bad at making those myself, I tend to do a lot of building for the scenario. If the main piece you want to use is Sun Tze for LI, you might consider Vanilla because you'll get access to cheaper doctors than the sophotect plus toys like the hac tao and dao fei to play with. Even if you want to stay in ISS duo Su Jian is also a thing, as is a Hsien haris.

    That being said, if you want to roll out with a wu ming link as well, you should absolutely go for it. A quick take from me:

    You could scrap the yudbot and upgrade the CSU to a Weibing If you wanted to. You could squeeze a bit more stuff by losing the LGL wu ming for a lower point profile. Same with the Zhanying, though then you'd wouldn't have a hacker and would have to fill those two spots with non rems. Depending on who your opponent is, it might be worth it to try and shuffle things around to get a Rui Shi in there.

    I used him every now and again in N2, but i don't think he holds his value as well in N3. They made him cost a fair bit more and I think made him a bit more fragile. My main problem with him is that with those stats you should be aggressive with him, but in LI i'm not convinced its worth the risk. For a point less you get the much harder to kill power armor version who can still put it in work if he needs to. If you were supporting him with a CoC pheasant maybe, but that's not personally where'd I'd want to tie up all those points and roster slots in LI, especially because we have better attack pieces in his point range. If he had an HMG or we could put him in a link, that'd be a different story, but that's not a thing we have now, and I'd rather use a Hsien for a long range MSV2 attack piece.

    I'm not a huge fan. You have to be willing to invest in a backline Kanren or CoC to defend yourself from your lieutenant dying. That's much less of a problem when you're ARM4 with 2 wounds, NWI and Mimetism.

    I really would not want to lose the helperbot. Especially when it's going in harms way for a Sophie. Sophotects are way too expensive to not have a helperbot or two.

    And the Wu Ming LGL is probably my favorite profile (Speculative fire on 13s is just evil!), to the point that I would probably drop the HRL instead of the LGL.

    I might be willing to only have 9 orders (plus Sun's LT order) to bring in a Rui Shi, though.

    I quite like the sniper variant. He's a good shot, brings the same benefits from Strategos along and is still quite resistant to getting killed (total immunity is a really powerful ability). Although nothing like the tank his version 1 self is he has the benefit of not being hackable. As mush as I love the HI version, with limited insertion I see more people bringing assault hacking devices and getting isolated and/or immobilised is awful.

    I see no reason why Sun Tze and a full Wu Ming link shouldn't be competitive, although I will admit not to having played such a list competitively. This might inspire me to give it a go in which case I will post back with the results.

    since im brazilian and we have only one very small tournament here ( 6 guys) can you show me some of the competitive lists ?
    i always try to do something good, but as always lack the points LOL or goes with a very small specialist count to play !

    As for a competitive list with Sun TzeV2, I took the below to a small event and won with it. It's a vanilla list rather than a sectoral one and has no Wu ming in it but I did really enjoy using it.

    Please note that it is my friend who is going to the Interplanetary. Not me.

    That said I did manage to get a game this evening with the list against his Onyx contact force. Since it is a list he will taking to a competitive event in the near future I won't describe his list in detail even though it may be getting some significant changes. The scenario we played was supplies on a wintry table. (Hopefully the image below is visible.) The terrain had be placed before determining scenario, which led to some interesting placement of the crates. One was in a quite exposed position on top of a low building, the central one was up on one of tallest buildings on the table but slightly less exposed to AROs, whereas the last one was surrounded by walls on 3 sides and that huge forest/hill on the other.

    I won the roll for initiative and knowing my opponent had a full link of rodoks with some other nasty aggressive pieces decided that I wanted first turn. So my opponent forced me to deploy first (left hand side of the photo), this gave me quite a few nice places to deploy in total cover but all avenues to advance up the table would require braving potential AROs and I knew from past experience that my opponent's Onyx are quite fond of a noctifer missile launcher! However, my opponent would have no hold-back model to deploy whereas I would have 2.

    With this in mind I deployed the link team in total cover behind some walls with an easy approach up the left flank should I choose to lead with them up the left flank (or the far side from the perspective of the photo). The remotes were placed more centrally with the dakini in a position to advance on the supply crate on the right flank. (Near side from the photo, just visible on the other side of the huge tree covered hill. This terrain feature counted as mountainous jungle/forest terrain as well as a low-vis saturation zone.) My opponent set up his link team atop and behind another tall multi-level hill, this one without the tree-cover, overlooking the centre and near side objective. Most of the rest of his force deployed in places of total covered attempting to remain safely out of sight. His Evo-hacker spent a command token to start the game with kaleidoscope up to protect his hackers. I then deployed Sun Tze prone on top of an over-sized lantern with sight to 2 members of the link through the forest and a sophotect near to my remotes.

    Turn 1

    First turn started perfectly with Sun Tze putting a bullet into both link members and killing them dead. He then crawled forwards to just gain sight to the sensor remote all the way across the table. When measured we were over 48" apart and both of us missed. Using co-ordinated orders the remotes started moving up, safely getting the weibing and chaiyi up the centre of the table and the dakini to the supply crate. After a couple of orders it successfully searched it and ran back with the contents to near my deployment zone. The Weibing was given marksmanship and was able (with triangulated fire) to shoot down the alien sensor remote. My remotes and the sophotect all went into suppressive fire with another command token and the link finished by poking the HMG around the corner to provide some AROs.

    With only 6 regular orders my opponent had some problems working out how best to get up the table. He'd lost a couple of specialists and none of them were ideal to get to the remaining crates in light of my ARO pieces and repeaters. (A regular hacker isn't normally that troublesome but one backed up by deflector level 2 and potentially firewall mods is.) Using it own order a TO marker moved up into cover whilst in line of sight of the Wu ming HMG. He then put up Kaleidoscope again before performing a co-ordinated order with the marker, Evo-hacker and 2 others, most of whom moved into sight of the Wu-ming HMG and the hacker, within range of the chaiyi. I would have to choose whether to ARO with the HMG or hacker, or break the link in an attempt to protect both. I decided to gamble and hope he failed the hacking roll if he tried it and shot back with the Wu-ming on a Xeodron. He chose to hack me and even with a -9 mod passed the WiP roll (rolled a 1!) however it was my turn for good fortune as the Zhanying passed his BTS roll. (Something very rare for me as I normally fail saves whatever the odds.) The Wu-ming managed to wound the xeodron and it was back to plan B for my opponent. Another co-ordinated order with the marker and xeodron. My ARO shots were directed at the xeodron, which inflicted another wound but the missile from a noctifer turned knocked the HMG unconscious. The xeodron then finished it off to prevent the sophotect running across to heal him before trying some shots on Sun Tze. The final move backfired as Sun Tze just calmly shot the hulking alien thing down. (Range and low-vis made his odds of hitting poor but I rolled high enough that he needed a crit to beat me, which he didn't get.)


    Turn 2

    My link was broken and I had a repeater within range of one of his hackers. So I wasn't keen to reform them with the zhanying but only had 2 command tokens left. So I focused on the scenario. The sophotect raced up the middle of the table, out of sight of AROs and climbed to the central objective before retrieving the supply crate and running back to my deployment line. I even had enough orders to go back into suppressive fire before getting the submachine-gun Wu-ming to place some mines down before finally re-forming the link.

    With the pressure now on to get a supply crate off me the combined got a little more aggressive. The noctifer moved around to get sight onto the sophotect and weibing from what was almost certainly more than 24" away but I chose to only dodge to safety with the sophotect (who had the crate). I was lucky and the missile sailed past harmlessly on the first order but hit home true with the next, killing the remote. Then a spitfire Umbra began bouncing around and gutted the chaiyi before chancing a cautious move to close with my sophotect. This unfortunately failed as even with walls and making the most of his 6" movement he still finished in line of sight of Sun Tze who's aim was true and shot the alien dead. With his last few orders the noctifer tried to exact vengeance on Sun Tze, the first exchange went in the alien's favour, although Sun Tze made his save caring not for the explosive ammunition and the next exchange saw the noctifer go down the same way so many of his fellows had this game.


    We called it there as in my turn the Wu-ming link was now free from the threat of his hacker (since he had killed my repeaters) but more significantly, there was no way for him to get to my models already carrying crates with a small order pool (in loss of Lt) and still under the threat of Sun Tze's AROs.


    Overview:

    Few first outings for a list have been as successful as this for me. Getting first turn was hugely impactful and small mistakes such as leaving 2 members of the core fire-team visible through the forest gave me a strong advantage early on. I somewhat misplayed my remotes and didn't really use the Wu-ming link at all directly. (That was in part because of my, quite justified, paranoia about noctifer missile launchers!) However, I could have probably been better off leaving the link completely out of sight that first turn but be more aggressive with the remotes to extend the repeater coverage further and place the Weibing far enough forwards that it's suppressive fire could not have been out-ranged. It would have also forced my opponent to spend more orders positioning and spend more time debating whether to go after a crate rather than set up his co-ordinated hack or shoot trap. (Which in fairness to him, ought to have worked after he passed the WiP roll needing a 4 or less.)

    I'll certainly aim to play a couple more games with the list and in particular, see how it does going second.

    It's absolutely possible, and really a pretty good idea for biotechvore in particular. Sun Tze has a high BTS and gives you an extra order to get things moving.

    There are a bunch of of tweaks you could do to fit your own flavor, but a Wu Ming link, Su Jian and Sun Tze all fit in a limited insertion list, no problem.

    With that you can start the link with the celestial & kuang shi, smoke up to create safe pathways, then move the link to the Wu Ming to advance while shooting. The Su Jian can book it forward fast and hide on top of something, then try and exploit weaknesses in the enemy as they advance. If you go second, the panzerfaust and heavy rockets provide some nasty AROs for the enemy to deal with. It's a little low on hacking protection without a ninja.

    You have a spitfire crane agent linked, with madtraps, 3 Flash pulses WIP 14 with the fireteam bonus aswell, smoke B2 and access to fire ammo too, then Sun as second headspear been hiding with sforza, sophotecto with 2 yudbot not need explain, then a TR REM for ARO and cover sun, and a AHD kanren for tags and ips. Its a chance to play sniper Sun.

    Sun & Crane CG is totally viable, and you can get up to 19/20 order lists that way if you're not playing limited insertion. However... it's a little off topic. But if you were going that route for limited insertion... why not take two cranes?
