StarCo thoughts after first battles

    Have you had a chance to cut your teeth with StarCo? How well did it go and what are your thoughts on the faction? I'm still trying to figure out the feel of this force.

    Played against a order heavy Ajax Aleph list tonight, mission Supremacy.
    Going first my Brawler sniper haris took out TR bot thanks to Jaguar smoke. Hawwa was able to surprise forward observe Ajax. Dice failed me with Emily shooting her grenades at Ajax. CSU's moved up to push the button and failed.

    His active turn using White Noise and TO sniper took out my Brawler link and locked down the board. Ajax did the rest to take out my other scoring pieces.

    I have gotten in two games with Starco so far but they are both low points. So far I am really liking it.

    First game was 150 pts vs tohaa. My CSU duo team ran up a flank and killed his DT and data tracker before falling to some crits. My defensive aguaciles fire team kept him from advancing much and on turn two Spector air dropped in and pinned down the remains of their force with drop bears. Big take away for me was having enough orders to power Spector was key to success in this scenario.

    Second game was 175 pts vs Ariadna in Armory. Similar list but Spector stayed on the ground this time and Emily replaced one of the aguaciles in the link. Spector again did most of the work gunning down 2 grunts, an engineer, 2 foxtrots, and the Unknown Ranger before finally going down.

    I can try to remember to upload my lists later but as IA mobile isn't updated yet I can't do so from my phone.

    About your list: its an interesting approach to not go for a core link. I think if you really want to make the most out of StarCo, you should get one. E.g. in your list the Daktari and CSUs could be replaced by Alguaciles. Change one other piece and you are already at a full core including Emily.

    But I wouldn’t want to argue thst you definitely need a core link for a functioning list. In your list Id just really want to get the Tsyklon into combat group 1.
    Attacking Ajax, who was a crazy good PH with indirect fire seems like a big mistake to me. Attackin him with a high burst weapon like the Tsyklon spitfire (with marksmanship in case Ajax still is allowed to claim cover) would probably be the most efficient way to remove him.

    This was my initial list build using mostly what I had available in my collection. Didn't want to confuse myself with too many proxies. List does need more practice with and tinkering.

    Emily in a core would've been devastating to that list though. Image her covering anyone in E/M grenades... as soon as the proxy engineer is isolated the opponent can't use his engineer anymore and then you'll walk among statues :D

    I played two games against Druze with the list below. Both missions were straight forward fights - Supremacy and Decapitation, I think I may have swapped lieutenants to the MB for Decapitation. In one game I got blown out in one turn and in the second, I returned the favour. It's a very blunt, in-your-face, type list. The combination of a pain train, Massacre, Spector AND an MSV Harris linked sniper (with lots of smoke support) is a stupid amount of tools for killing. If I were playing a more objective oriented mission, I may drop the sniper and mix in some mid-field bandits/Hawwas but I suspect regular Nomads play that game better. However, when it comes to the HI pain train - these guys have a good set up. For the list below, I wish I had the points to get the multi-rifle brigada in (too many shotguns - need more suppressive fire), but can't figure out how to get the 6 pts yet retain the 14 orders.

    Emily Handelman in an Alguacile link is really powerful IMO. She's got great spec fire capability, she's a very useful specialist, she's got a DTW and she's a deadly gunfighter with BS 13 and Mimetism. Leaving her at home will be very difficult to say the least.

    Uhahu was mostly wasted as there wasn't really anything hackable on the other side - i ended up using her to crouch on a rooftop and take out a Hunzakut with her assault pistol. Emily joined the Agi link and mostly disappointed (due to dice).

    Spector in the Haris was crazy good. Took out a nest of suppression fire brawlers and druze by chucking out all his drop bears into firing position then coming around the corner to start shooting them with his 4 shot multi rifle.

    Cateran and Hardcase both did quite well. Stealth and a silent weapon works well - so long as it hits and kills them.

    Just finished a Biotechvore match tonight. To my surprise I found a glaring weakness; this army doesn't techno-magically make you a good player. I know, I'm as surprised as you lot surely are. If we're mercenaries then we get paid, and if we get paid then we're pros, so how was I not suddenly the king of my local, nay, national meta?

    I hadn't eaten today, the sun was in my eyes, my mother grandmother and dog (separate entities) were all dying in the hospital, my opponent used to bully me in highschool and I couldn't get over that, I thought I was playing magic the gathering, I thought everyone in the game shop and even the gameshop itself were all just a hallucination brought on by dementia/syphilis/shrooms. We done? Okay, good.

    I normally play vanilla Nomads. I know how to counter fireteams, but dear Bakunin god do I not know how to play with them. This proved a great source of entertainment for our local QK player at the next table.

    I also pretty much never take HI. When I do it's the mk12 Kriza who spends the game in suppressive fire threatening half the board. That's my schtick, I'm all about board control and usually achieve it with a fuckload of zeros and morans and all the other low cost goodies Nomads bring to the table. McMurrough I get, a single Gecko or HI I get. But walking 5 clustered models through open ground? That sounds like a terrible idea. I know HI is meant to take hits but ending your turn with them standing in a town square with thumbs up their asses isn't something I can confidently do. In hindsight I should have.

    I'm not used to expensive models, I balk at anything over 25pts. My troops usually die in droves but they slow down the enemy enough that my specialists have already grabbed the objective and hidden it deep within my deployment area surrounded by suppressive fire Aguaciles. As such I usually field 14 to 20 order lists. It was time to learn how to play with a single combat group list, and what better way to own the midfield than with a dual Pain Train.

    Dear reader, Starco.. no, I got shitstomped. Like nothing left alive before my 3rd turn shitstomped. I could blame the dice but it was ultimately a couple terrible decisions I made at the start of the game (And a fuckload of tied ARM saves, so 20% dice and 80% my own dumb ass). Also I'm running at 1 beer per 2 paragraphs so feel free to stop reading.

    So this was meant to force it's way into the midfield, both link teams mowing down the enemy as metal played in the background and sunglasses descended from the heavens onto their bloodsoaked faces. The Tsyklon would deny area in suppressive fire while the teams actively hunted or broke up and acted individually. Irmandinho would provide smoke for the Grrls while maybe grabbing a classified as he suicidally charged the enemy. The real goal with Irmandinho was to bring himself and the zondbot into CC against a tag or HI and can opener the target with B2 AP CCW. This did not happen.

    I show up at the game shop and find out I'm playing against US Ariadna. Great! No hackers. This guy has had awful dice rolls in our previous games and I think I know what his list will look like. Expecting a grunt fireteam and several infiltrators I politely inform him that he's fucked. Then we deploy.

    Alright, that's a lot of AP and I've never seen him field even a single Blackjack, this is different. But hey, I once swept this guy in battleship, I'm inside his mind. I've got this.

    All directions given from my side of the table, so pretend you're looking at this from only one side. Apologies for the lack of photos, I didn't expect to write a full batrep. I've never written one of these before so comments/criticism are honestly welcome.

    Deployment: Ariadna wins the roll and chooses to play first, so I make him deploy first. We each deploy on the side of the table we're already standing on because we're lazy fucks. His side has 60% of the cover but I figure between Irmandinhos smoke and Massacre's eclipse grenades I can still get around. There's enough midfield cover that we both deploy largely in the open without risking AROs.

    Ariadna: Both Foxtrots succeed the PH-3 to deploy center, they're irrelevant for the rest of this story. Rosie fails forward deployment and ends up right side with a blackjack in his deployment zone. Minuteman link team and 112 are hugging the left side of the board where there's dense cover. Engineer and the other Blackjack are center deployment zone.

    I pile up the MB link in the center and RiotGrrls on the right. Tsyklon goes center and Irmandinho goes on the right behind the Riot Grrl Haris.

    Turn 1A: I burn a command token to short him 2 orders on group 1. Ariadna pushes the link team up the left edge of the board and out of the BioTechVoreAreaThing (BTAVT from here on). He continues pushing it forward until it passes the center cover and the ML and AP Rifle Minutemen threaten my Giot Grrls link across the map. Turns out there was a giant diagonal firelane that I I didn't expect him to reach. Minutemen take a couple pot shots but the Grrls dodge and dip into cover. He spends the rest of the turn moving Rosie and 112 out of BTAVT, leaving the dozer and both Blackjacks inside BTVAT.

    Turn 1B: Irmandinhos runs forward because he's extremely suicidal err, impetuous. I quickly realize that my placement is shit, because his move towards the nearest enemy places him within 2in (5cm) of a Riot Grrl and within sight of the linked Minuteman missile launcher. A failed dodge and successful missile later, Irmandinhos is chunky salsa and the Riot Grrl has 1 wound. MB Linkteam moves forward, Massacre throws Eclipse grenades blocking the Minuteman team, but not enough orders to reach the next bit of cover. Grrl Link moves up, MB link Moves up, Tsyklon reaches center. I burn a command token to place 2 MB's and the Tsyklon on suppressive fire.

    Biotech resolution:
    Ariadna: Dozer makes the save, both blackjacks take 1 wound.

    Starco: I forgot the BTVAT existed, shit. MB Hacker makes the save. MB LT takes a wound, Daktari takes a wound and drops unconscious in the plague.

    Turn 2A: The blackjacks and dozer move out of the BTVAT under full cover. A lot of orders are spent moving both blackjacks and Rosie towards the center line. Rosie tries to climb midfield cover but MB LT gets her in ARO. AP HMG Blackjack (right flank near my Grrls) pushes into the open and wastes the Combi Grrl, then knocks out the Spitfire Grrl and enters suppressive fire.

    Turn 2B: 6 orders left, fuck single combat groups. Command token to reform MB link team. HMG MB tries to knock out the AP rifle and Missile launcher Minutemen. They're entrenched such that I can't shoot one without seeing both. 2 orders later my HMG MB is dead and they're fine. Tsyklon climbs into some cover and shoots the same minutemen. It dies horrible. MB LT climbs some cover and starts shooting at ML Minuteman. 2 orders later he's dead. Avicenna goes full hacksaw ridge and runs through Blackjack's SF (all misses) to revive spitfire Grrl, success!.

    Biotech resolution:

    Turn 3A: Minuteman ML catches Massacre and drops him. AP HMG Blackjack kills Avicenna, Spitfire Grrl dodges for several orders then drops. Sniper Blackjack wipes out the hacker MB.

    Turn 3B: No models remaining, everyone's dead and getting eaten by nannites.

    Final results:

    Ariadna: Rosie's dead, man. 278 pts remaining

    StarCo: Nothing remains but red mist and memories. 0 pts remaining

    Lessons learned:

    The very thing that drew me to infinity: Any list can beat any other list if you're clever. There are few to no hard counters in this game and I got way too cocky with all the HI. Good armor and linkteam bonuses do not make up for poor positioning.

    Losing units in small order lists really hurts. Expensive units are simultaneously more survivable and less acceptable to lose, not just due to stats.

    Missile launchers in link teams are awesome: Seriously, never leaving home without one again. EXP ammo was a friggin' nightmare, especially on a B2 ARO.

    I loudly proclaimed mid game "Fuck fireteams, fuck fireteams, I'm never playing anything but vanilla ever again." Much to the amusement of the QK and JSA players at the next table.

    Fireteams aren't bad, I'm bad.

    How to use fireteams.

    How the hell do people play effectively with so few orders?

    @Civilized Barbarian my only advice is to amplify what works for you and downplay what doesn't (until you feel experimental).


    I had my first game yesterday. My opponent was not at his top game and I was playing a 90% familiar list so I had a big advantage to start. My list used a lot of stuff I was already used to and it came together very well. StarCo isn't a new meta defining superfaction but they have everything a player could need.     Some cool moments were Hawwa using reserved deployment and Infiltration to see the enemy Lizard out of cover and range so my opponent needed to use other units to clear the way. Meteor Zond did this faster than most players could but it still stopped the TAG from having all 9 orders to play. Alguacil MSR got hit with FIVE HMG shots! I had a Servant waiting to heal her and everything.

    Cateran got the TAG down to 2 then 5 BS but missed 6 shots in a row and ran out of orders. You may notice I'm a sniper guy but missing all 10 of the sniper shots fired made quick work of them. Still somehow did their jobs pretty well.

    Finally Spektor dropped and used Drop Bears to get the Moira (using the Irmandinho to get them to ARO and set it off) then forming the third point of a triangle flank with the Brigada and Dak to get constant back shots eliminating the Lizard.

    Hardcase killed the HVT using the familiar LSG+Token to get there.

    Anaconda didn't do much until the game was basically over and she ran around swapping Fireteam Leader with the Brigada to keep in good range mopping up some leftovers. I was reacting to my opponent and the Duo is a speed/penetration feature so it wasn't needed. Which was his downfall he shouldn't have been so aggressive.

    Yes to both! Riot Grrls, Emily, Raoul, and the Massacre/MB train. I think a couple Jaguars and the Brawler sniper are a given when playing StarCo, but who knows what you're going to face from there.

    Its probably still too early to tell, but I think StarCo is very well designed and all link options have their appeal.
    There isn't a single unit, which feels out of place.

    For the next tournaments the only constants in my lists will probably be the Hawwa and the Irmandinho.
    The units seeing the least play will be:
    Anaconda: I don't own the model and it doesn't really fit my playstyle. I have Geckos since they came out and used them in about 5% of my Corregidor games max
    Hardcase: cool unit, I like him in Ariadna, but I never get to use as many Jaguars as I want for DZ protection, so I'd always take another Jaguar over the Hardcase. The shell games with Hardcase and Cateran just aren't important enough to me.
    Knauf: He isn't survivable enough for ARO and in active turn a Brawler MSV2 sniper has more potential thanks to the Jaugars.

    The point of the Hardcase is that he fights exactly as well as units twice his cost. The shell game is like 4th on his list of uses. He even Inferior infiltrates on 10 for cheap so it's not too high risk.

    Not a fan of Knauf. Own and like the model, but can't imagine him ever seeing the table. He's the only StarCo unit I can say that about.
