So last night I had my first game with Haqq. I was not taking a very competitive list (I am trying to teach my friend to play) but it was a lot of fun getting a feel for this new playstyle.

Previously I have played JSA and PanO.

Haqq felt very different to both - as I would expect! With JSA I tend to try and lean on CC to crack hard targets, with PanO it is all about the shooting game. I was expecting it to be difficult to feel effective with relatively low BS miniatures, especially as I was deliberately avoiding some of the 'classic' Haqq advantages (like Ghazis).

What I actually found was that losing the extra shooting effectiveness did not matter so much as the mobility of the two minis I leaned on heavily (a Namurr and Khawarij) meant they could easily position themselves favourably in the active turn and take out their targets. They were far squishier than the equivalents I would have used in a PanO playstyle, and suffered on the reactive turn as a result - but equally, every time I've looked at Haqq lists I've found specialists that I want to run in abundance, which is tougher in both the other styles I've played.

I know that a lot of people feel like the differences in armies are comparatively small compared to many other games, and I would agree that there are fewer fully unique elements, but so far I've found that it just means I find it easier to get a general idea of how these things work as I try out different armies because they share many of the same fundamental concepts, it is just which parts of the game they emphasize which changes from faction to faction.

And running a few super soldiers around was a ton of fun!
