I can’t quite parse if Smoke Templates have a Blast Focus.

The general rules for templates indicate that they do:

“In Infinity, different Templates have a Blast Focus, which is used to determine if a Trooper is affected by the Template, or if the Template's Area of Effect has been blocked by Total Cover from intervening scenery elements. For a Trooper to be affected by the Template, it must be possible to trace a
LoF from the Template's Blast Focus to the Trooper, without being blocked by Total Cover.”

The Smoke Template rules has an Important box stating:

“Template Weapons and their Area of Effect are affected by Scenery Elements.

Smoke Templates, as their Area of Effect have infinite height, form a cylinder that will be affected by scenery elements. The Area of Effect will be cut horizontally and vertically by such scenery elements (see the example).”

Now these two rules can exist at the same time but the examples in Smoke Templates shows how a model isn’t in smoke even though it should be if a LoF is drawn frin the Blast Focus?

Everyone i ever played with treated smoke as follow:
horizontal from the center the smoke reaches out till its blocked by scenery (a wall, scatter,...) and from every position it is not blocked the smoke rises to infinite hight unless blocked by some scenery in its way upwards (like a balkony, a bridge,...)

unfortunatly the example does just show how smoke is blocked on its way up, but not how it is affacted by some scenery shich is not a solid blocked with infinity hight (i think we can all agree that smoke outside of an house does not affect the room inside behind a wall)

This was a change from N3>N4, it used to be that if you could draw LoF from the blast focus to any part of the Silhouette then the trooper would be in cover. In N4 this was simplified to smoke acting like a cylinder to avoid complex trigonometry with complex terrain layouts in the middle of the board.

Ok. That’s my interpretation too but my friends remain unconvinced - saying that the general rules for templates having Blast Focus is still valid and that nothing with the Smoke Template rules contradict it.

Then get your friend to provide a convincing explanation to why the example diagrams don’t show what your friend says they should.
