A lot of people (lists I see online, discussion in podcasts) seem to be really excited about the Raveneye unit... I don't get why? A cheap FO with E/M mines... I guess? As a CJC player I don't see much use for them... but I even see them in CJC lists... Am I missing something?
This. E/M Mines are one of the very few things that can stop a DZ incursion dead regardless of which unit's gotten back there (outside of the Morat drop troop, who's Veteran), and short-range attackers who can rapidly enter an opponent's DZ are a major competitive threat right now. And this for the price of an Alguacile FO, without compromising your Order pools. They're not going to be amazing if you play primarily against opponents who aren't fielding Impersonators, Superior Infiltrators and fancy Airborne Deployment every other game, but when you start running into those sorts of units you'll find yourself wishing for minefields.
1) cheapest regular order with a "gun". Ties with Kappa in cost (but -1BS) and with Varangian/rem Racers. 2) In Starmada you can link 2 in a "Security" fireteam that remains pure, even with Cho disguised as BSG bluecoat. 3) Minelayer of EM mines, or cybermines. I prefer EM because it can be a LT. 4) Possible LT. 4) Carries an EM large teardrop template weapon, an SMG, and is a Forward Observer of WP13. In short, they are delightfully disposable, can push buttons, and buff their perimeter. Insane utility for their prize.
Yeah, I guess they're just not quite as juicy in (my) CJC - Jaguars are cheaper, way more killie and can link (Raveneye wins if they're going to just hide in my DZ) - my meta doesn't lean heavy into infiltrators (we have way more full-link snipers of one flavor or another) - can't link in CJC - can't be a Lt. in CJC - I already have two FOs that are repeaters and have mim-3 in CJC most games (Morans)
Honestly I see them as a kind of auto take most of the time. They're cheap, specialists, have minelayer, access to suppressive fire, flash pulse ARO and have e/m which can stop big nasties in their tracks. Brilliant unit.
I do not feel them as important in Corregidor as they are in Military orders but they have their uses as a rearguard element.
Kind reminder that EM ammo can isolate. With PHYS 15 and BTS 6 (Achilles): 60% chances to dodge (with PHYS 12) 2 BTS/2 DMG 13 -> 25% chances of tanking both damages (0.5 x 0.5) This lead to 70% chances of getting out without harm After 5+ orders with a 50 pts unit, I'm not ready to loose it 30% of the time for a 12pts unit. This state is the best when ennemy is inside your DZ: - can break his Fireteam - isolated models are useless as active troopers - moving an engineer across the table is hard - an isolated unit will probably not reposition an will be an easy target on your turn - has same effect on a unit whatever it's number of W or STR is now, remember that Raveneye has the ability to put 2 EM templates (both mine and Marat), which is frightening IMO a EM ammo is far worse for a HI/TAG than a AP, DA or Continuous Damage ammo >>> For 12pts that's a steal, I don't even get why he got an SMG, a combi rifle would be fine on such a unit. Even if you don't use it, 12 pts is fine for a pompom
