I was wondering about that issue myself. The old forums had a thread for doing just that, though as I recall it linked to an external database. Some sort of new forum or sub-forum here, dedicated to that topic, might make it easier for new/returning players to connect with existing groups. For the OP - Whereabouts in the SE U.S. are you talking about? (I'm in western NC, so might be able to help you out/point you in the right direction if you're referring to that part of the region.)
