Just coming back to the game after a 12+ month hiatus... Previously run MAF and want to expand to something different (and learn how hacking works). Seems Onyx is gimped a bit with Dr Worm being the sole Engineer, sole Doctor, and sole source of D-charges.

So how do we make stuff work? I have particular interest in Hunting Party, which will be at an upcoming tourney, because a single Engi means removing Immobilised is virtually out of the question.

Onix in general works pretty well if you can protect you leutinent. The only issue is playing without smoke. The Med-Tech as an IL can hide but yes losing it will hurt.

You should play with Unidron core ( without foward observes!!!) and use them to feed with orders 3 or 4 models to hunt your oponent. I recommend noctiferos and malignos, both TO and with ADL by the mission rules. Umbra legates hackers works pretty well to but counts as speciallist.

The Noctifer can be leutinent to and for this hunting party i think is a must play.

    Good luck at the tournement

I think KISS also gets dual Glue Guns for this mission, right? B&K might be an option for that, as well as laying down a repeater net for more conventional hackers to buff and/or immobilize. Remember that KISS is a repeater REM, and so benefits from Overclock.

That said, I actually haven't played this mission yet, so I'm not sure if that's actually worth it.

Nope, it's the same as with Deva Functionaries + Devabot: the Elite Troop is the controller, the Syncronized troop is a Remote. So Bit would get an ADL, but Kiss should not.

    Just one word: Cry.

Onyx is not a competitive sectorial for ITS.

Come on, thats not fair. I think Onix works well in a competitive way except in 2 or 3 missions where our expensive specialist and the leutinent issue are a problem.

In fact in my zone Onix is concidered one of the "strongest" armies ( apart of Tohaa, Aleph and maybe vanilla Aridna)

Onyx are competitive, you are at a handicap in a few places but have some excellent strength in others. However I will say the weaknesses are BIG after playing them in ITS for a while.

The linked plasma sniper upsets people though, that's worth the price of admission.

Ah, I see where I got confused. I was thinking of the clarification from the previous forums that said that a model with a glue gun would get a second one, forgetting that it only applied to troopers that would have gotten one from the mission only.

    Tourney will be 5 games over 2 days;
    Power Pack
    Capture and Protect
    Highly Classified
    Acquisition
    Hunting Party

300pts, 2 lists, no Spec Ops. Based on the array of missions, is it feasible to run the first 4 with 1 list to have a set list for HP?

Onyx really that non-competitive in ITS?

I had a lot of trouble list building due to lack of Lt options/chain of command and need for hackers.

If someone really wants to kill your Nexus Hacker Lt, they will.

I think you can use the same list for all but Highly Classified, but I wouldn't fret over that one. You will still be limited to Dr Worm for Sabotage, Inoculation, Test Run, Experimental Drug... So you could run with a core list for all five, and change the specifics for Highly Classified and Acquisition.

Then use a Nexus AO, or deploy a nullifier and move the nexus Lt to the edge so you can move out of the Nullifier's zone, hack, and back.

Onyx is totally competitive, you just need to kill the enemy first without making them retreat. It's true it doesn't have as many options as Shasvastii or generic for specialist-heavy games, but that is also true about Morat.

Sorry but i think Onix is very competitive, only a bit challenging

If you feel your leutinent could fall victim of fidays and co just pick 3 nexus and do the tipical trolling. I know nexus are a bit more expensive than the avarage basic soldier, but we still have immetrons. Or if you are really afraid or you are playing biotecvoro or hunting party pick de noctifer by + CAP* ( don't remember how it's said CAP in english infinity army*).

I've been playing Onix in tournements since last spring (leaving my beloved Yu Jings at home) and i can asure that if you know your handicaps and you do list thinking on it you can go perfectly.

Maybe general sumary of Onix weakness:

1- Med-Tech: okey only one medic ingenier, but he is IL not remote. You should deploy it very very safe, and work with slave drons. Second main problem, forget about D charges, unless you made a very safe aproximation route for med tech.

2- Leutinent: the big one, but not only for Onix. In my opinion we have 3 viable leutinent options. From more safe to less: Noctifer, Nexus, Suryat.

Noctifer: the safe one, camo to leutinent that hardly can be killed by a DA troop etc. But cost one CAP* point. In misdions where killing leutinent is important or against heavy DA list i will take it.

Nexus: the basic one, you can go in two ways with it. First picking one and protecting it with your life, usually deploying it inside a unidron core. Second one, picking at least two of them. If you put all nexus in thw same group in every game you should be able to decide where to deploy the leutinent. Some times i put it out some times inside the link but the main idea is not showing a free leutinent. Apart if you pick the hacker option as a leutinent, you feel confident your oponent won't be able to reach it and he is out of the link you will have a free order to buff the unidrons.

Suryat: pros nobody expects a Suryat hmg as a çeutinent, he is strong and he can make good use of leutinent order if it was neccesary. Cons: you pay 44 points for this guy you should use it but if he eat some critics or just bad luck bye bye xd. I only picked the Suryat as leutinent in spam list where you have other attacks models ( overdrons, xeodrons, fraactas etc) and use it like a B plan or just to take low damage enemies.

3- No smoke: that more than issue is a diferent meta. Most players are used to have always smoke to cover some lofs. Bad in Onix you don't cover lofs, you just kill them with fire power or outrun them by TO marker, superjump.

4- visors: we have only one MSV2. Well some sectorials did't have anyone. In general i think this isn't a problem unless you face some heavy ODD or TO list. The makreep itself isn't bad at all, just she didn't feed well when you make list beacuse the 1.5 CAP* hurts when you want unidrons armed with sniper rifles or your speciallists cost 0,5 for being hackers. In tournements i should advice you to make at least one list with a sniper o hmg just in case. ( And as i said she is not bad shooting). I think makreep feeds better with spam list ( 15-18 orders and no sphinx or xeodrones haris).

Anyways thats my opinions, sorry for the long post but i expect that don't discourage you to play with Onix in tournements.

Pd: sorry for english issues, it is just not my main language and i'm just learning:pensive:

Yeah, problem with Lieutenants, is the SWC cost for nothing.

Nexus and Samaritan can be it for free. Everyone else costs 0.5/1 just for the role.

Unidrons are are gonna be 2.5-3 SWC depending on your weapons.
Another 1 for the Q Drone.
    1-2 Hackers (E Drone and Bit/Kiss- or Nexus I guess) for 0.5-1.
And then probably something with a Spitfire or Noctifier ML.

You just don't have the SWC to play with.

I kinda think playing the shell game with Nexus Specialists is probably the best choice. Points are less valuable than SWC.

I just wanted to make it clear for those just starting in Onyx. The Suryat and Legate get the Lt. option at no additional SWC, but they are both on platforms that cost SWC in and of themselves (the HMG+Tinbot and Spitfire, respectively).

Speaking of... I've always wondered why the Legate K1 Lt. cost SWC.

Isn't it because all K1 combis cost 0,5SWC in Onyx? I'm not sure why thou as Treitak and Tohaa get those for no SWC.
