Note, pictures and the Infinity Army lists are not currently working. I will add those when that functionality gets restored.

So, just got done with Captaincon 2018, and as always it was an amazing time. Huge kudos to Nestor for running another excellent event. Apologize in advance for any mistakes I make recalling the following events.

This year the Soldiers of Fortune was added to the event, and I decided to see how dirty of a list I could build with that criteria. The answer was disgustingly filthy.

First Round I had @Whijun, a talented player from the Boston goal, but who had cut his teeth down with us in CT. He was actually using an old army of mine, so I was pretty familiar with what he was bringing to the table for round one, Tic Tac Toe.

Whijun chose side, so I decided to go first. He had his eaters in a strong overwatching position, but I had selected my force with the Aquila in it, due to the many high balconies offering strong fields of fire. My first order after impetuous was for my Aquila to shoot through smoke and down his Sin Eater. This would be the last time shooting through smoke was a useful choice to me in the tournament, despite bringing to viewer and smoke to every game haha.
The Aquila then advanced across the rooftops, killed 2 of his zeros and entered supressive fire.
My Crocman advanced up the board, but did not have enough orders to get to the button. I wanted to press and reach safety, so decided to play conservatively.

My Techbee advanced, pushing buttons to finish out my turn.

On Whijun's turn one, I had to zondbot pick up to zero, and then decided what to do about my Aquila. I decided to fight it with his Riot Girl, doing a wound but taking 2 in return. He then hit a few buttons on his side of the table.

On my turn 2, I was able to kill another zero, to Daktari and Coup of Grac the Riot Girl for the classified. I flipped one of his buttons to me with a deeply advanced Auxilia, who then went down to an ARO from his link team.

On Whijun's turn I have reflipped the button, then killed my techbee and my Yuan Yuan. I still did not really have an answer to my Aquila though, so I was unable to really break out of his deployement zone.

On my turn I knew I was not going to be able to put him in retreat, so I set up a rock solid defense. Saito killed his Daktari and went supressive, the croc man dropped mines and hit the final button I needed and went supressive and every other model prepared for the onslaught.

Whijun attacked with his link team, but they were unable to overcome the supressive TO models though weight of says. He then captious moved his final zero, backflipped off the roof, survived the fall and the heavy flamer of an Auxbot, then died next order when he failed to hit the button. Very anticlimactic end to an exciting game, and resulted in a 10-1 instead of a 10-3.

In round two I had @deagavolver, one of the best players in the region. He beat me in our last local ITS, and was one lucky critic on Machon away from beating me in last year's Captain with finals. I have brought Qapu Khalki for Powerpack.

I chose side, so he chose 1st turn. I deployed pretty close in, so he was going to have to come to me. I was lucky and 2 Yuan Yuan scattered, though passed the heavy flamer saves they took from my pathfinder. Less luckily they were both blinded by flashpulses. Another Yuan Yuan snuck close and chain rifled my TR bot, but it passed its armor save and pulped it in return.

On the rest of his turn he advanced his TR bot and killed my Kamau and Pathfinder bot, retreating to an advantageous spot.

On my turn I cleaned out the Yuan Yuan, then sent up an Auxilia to deal with the TR bot. I was able to crisp it and a repeater bot, but then ate a critical shotgun blast from his doctor, but not before I hit the far right button and Telemetried.

On his turn he advanced his link and dueled my TR bot, taking it off the table. He then took up a commanding position, with his HRL looking over most of the table and the rest of the link guarding the center.

My Swiss sprung into action, the shock of his multi rifle cleaving through Odalesques, killing three before I pulled back into cover. I took a pot shot with my Regular at his HRL, but got fried for my effort.

On his final turn, Avicenna was the star. She hit the left and center buttons, then ran and connected my console and stayed there controlling it.

On my turn I knew I needed Avicenna dead and the center console to win. Fortunately I had models on either side of her, and after a few orders shooting her in the back she went down. Then, with seconds to go in the round, my Swiss sprinted over and flipped the switch on his second try. 5-1 final score.

In round three, I had @trussel103, one of the rising stars in our meta. He is branching out from his first faction, Morats, and brought a truly terrifying combined army list for Supplies.
I really wanted Saito for this to reclaim any recoved boxes, so went with my Aquila list.

He went first so I was able to counter his deployment, not allowing his Maakrep to easily see my models, while keeping wide fields of fire with my MSV units. I was also able to make use of the beautiful Miami palm trees (saturation zones) to negate some of the power of his Q drone by threatening it with my Kamau, which he would need 2s to hit on 3 dice.

On his turn, he cancelled many of his impetuous orders so as to not take AROs. He was able to snake a Daturazi forward and lob some speculative grenades, putting a my Aquila unconscious. He moved a Maakrep very far to the left and it was able to gun down one of my Auxilia through smoke, then he moved it back into total cover.

On my turn I went to work, bringing back my Aquila. Several command tokens later he was ready to go to work clearing Daturazi and Yuan Yuan. By the end of the game every Daturazi and Yuan Yuan would die by his hand. In addition, my Crocman would kill an R drone, but then get blinded by an Ikadron, so he retreated.

On his turn 2 he got sick of my Kamau locking down his Q drone, so one of his Maakrep went for a walk. After many orders repositioning, he got the perfect shot and murdered my Kamau. His Q drone was then able to advance and cover the center console.

On my turn 2, the croc man went and snagged the far left box, then fell back into total cover and went supressive. The Aquila continued clearing Impetuous troops, and won a duel with a supressive Maakrep. I was tempted to reveal Saito, but decided to wait and see if a more opportune moment arrived.

On His turn he advanced his Edrone and got the center box, but a pair of failed opening rolls meant that the third box was out of his reach. He then pulled the E drone back and prepared to fight for the tie.

Unfortunately, the place he took shelter was exactly where Saito had been patienty waiting. A smoke grenade and a swing of his EXP CC weapon was all it took, and the E Drone fell with Saito claiming the box. I didn't have enough orders to get the final box, so that was the end of the game and the tournament. Final score 9-1.

I was able to take 1st place, defending my Captaincon crown for the 4th time, proving that it is much better to be lucky than good. A really enjoyable tournament, and it got even better the next day when I was able to also win the Aristeia tournament! Sell your soul for good dice rolls kids, it is totally worth it.

In the final analysis I would not say Soldiers of Fortune is ready for competitive play. I think it is a neat idea, but every mercenary should be limited to AVA 1 and should not grant additional AVA if your faction already had access to them. Joan with 3 warcors or lists with masses of Yuan Yuan are not very fair or fun. That being said, I did not feel like giving Pan-O smoke was that big a deal (though note that I didn't think giving CA a KHD was that big of a deal either). Just my 2c.

Thanks again for all my Infinity and Aristeia opponents!

eh...army builder doesn't work ...still? :((...very curious to see your lists. Those are very balanced and well used during battles.

    Isn't working for me :(

Both lists had Joan and a bunch of irregular troops. The main differece was one has Saito and an Aquila, the other had a Swiss Hacker, Peacemaker and a TR bot.
