Hi guys, like I said in the subject, I'm not technically new to the game, having been playing for a few years now, but games have been few and far between, and against a fairly limited selection of opponents (mostly Yu Jing, but with some Ariadna of both US and TAK flavours, and a couple of games against fellow Aleph, Haqq, and Caledonians). I'm taking part in a tourney on the 29th (Australian time, so probably 28th for most of you), and I know there's going to be IA, plenty of OSS, some USAriadna & TAK, with maybe a Varuna, but as far as I know I'm going to be the only Steel Phalanx player (decided I'd go for them instead of OSS, with so many playing that).

Missions will be Capture and Protect, Biotechvore, and Looting and Sabotaging (none of which I've played before, but I did read the ITS10 doc to remind myself what the rules are). 300pts, two lists, no Spec Ops.

My two lists I put together are both Limited Insertion, since I found myself building 12-13 order lists otherwise, and felt the loss of the few extra guns was worth having everything all in one battlegroup and being immune to having my orders confiscated first turn.

First list, for the Capture and Protect and Looting and Sabotaging missions:
    Steel Phalanx
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]10 [IMG]1
ALKÊ Lieutenant Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 25)
THORAKITES (Forward Observer, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
THRASYMEDES (Fireteam: Enomotarchos) Submachine gun, Light Rocket Launcher, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades / Pistol, Shock CCW. (0.5 | 30)
THORAKITES Marksman Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
MYRMIDON OFFICER (Chain of Command) Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 35)
    EUDOROS Mk12, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 40)
MYRMIDON Spitfire, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 31)
MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16)
    TEUCER (Multispectral Visor L2) Feuerbach, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (2 | 48)
DIOMEDES MULTI Rifle, Nanopulser / Assault Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 42)

    6 SWC | 295 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

(Diomedes has the Multi Rifle instead of the Mk12 because it has an Anti-Materiel mode in case he can't make it to melee with the objective in L&S)

Second list, for the Biotechvore mission, where I will be pushing towards the middle ASAP:

    Myrmie Spam
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]9 [IMG]2
AJAX 2 Combi Rifles, Nanopulser / AP Heavy Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 39)
    EUDOROS Mk12, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 40)
MYRMIDON OFFICER (Chain of Command) Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 35)
MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16)
PHOENIX Heavy Rocket Launcher, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Heavy Pistol, DA CCW. (2 | 40)
MACHAON Lieutenant Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 38)
MYRMIDON Spitfire, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 31)
MYRMIDON Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 24)
SCYLLA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device UPGRADE: Maestro) Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser + 2 Devabots Charybdis / Pistol, E/M CC Weapon. (0.5 | 34)
[IMG] DEVABOT CHARYBDIS Heavy Flamethrower / Electric Pulse. (7)

    5 SWC | 297 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

There will likely be Total Immunity doggos to deal with, so I know my DA and EXP weapons will not be anywhere near as effective as usual, but I'm hoping I'll still be able to handle them if they close to melee, if I don't manage to kill them at range with Dam15 Mk12s and BSGs.

I know having the CoC model be in a more aggressive link team than the Lieutenant in the first list is probably a bit weird, but as both it's the only CoC option in SP and the Thorakitai have Forward Deployment L1 in ITS10 from being MI, and will thus be more up in the enemy's face than usual, I thought it might be worth a shot? Ditching him for a normal BSG Myrm would give me 16 points left over, with which I could upgrade either one of the normal Myrms to a character officer of some type or one of the Thorakitai to a bigger gun or being an Engineer or something. Unfortunately both of the really big gun Thorakitai cost 1.5SWC, which would mean ditching at least 0.5 SWC from somewhere. The Myrm Spitfire is kinda redundant with Eudoros there, so that could maybe go? That'd give 2SWC, enough for either a HMG or Feuerbach Thorakites, or the Myrm officer Phoenix, who has an HRL. I'm a bit short on specialists in that list, so... maybe ditch Mr Spitfire for Machaon, which gives me a doctor, then the Marksman Rifle Thorakites for a HMG? Or, if the Spitfire is still relevant even with Eudoros in there, ditch the Chain Rifle Myrm for Machaon instead, making up the points by swapping Thrasymedes for a normal LRL Thorakites, and maybe the Marksman Rifle Thorakites for an Engineer one?

What do you guys think? Any advice, either for the lists or the missions?

I don’t think you can use the word spam in a 9 orders list!

Never, ever, make a list with less than 10 orders. That particular list of yours (2nd one) is also missing 3 points, just enough for a warcor.

I think the absolute minimum of point you should use for a list is 298, you’d need a very strong justification to run less than that.

    -

I’m personally not a big fan of 10 orders list in ALEPH, I’d try to get close to 13-14, we have access to 2 Lamedh and AVA2 Lamedh in our sectorials, which really eases up list building. The sacrifice to go from 10 orders to 14 orders is usually just 1 mid-costed model and I think that the extra orders bring a lot more than a 4th or 5th attack piece would.

I reckon a HMG thorakite would serve you better than Alke in the first list - Thrasy already covers the spitfire rangeband.

I'd also encourage you to lose one of Scylla's devabots, and change Eudoros to a spitfire myrmidon in order to get the points to add some netrods/flash pulse bots - might also be an idea to lose the boarding shotgun guy for a chain rifle.

Oh yeah, it did drop beneath 10 while I was tweaking it, didn't it? Hm. Missed that somehow. It was originally a... 13 order list, I think? But I couldn't figure out how to split it.

Speaking of, how the heck do you split up 13-14 order lists? I can split ~16 order lists easily enough in OSS, but 13-14 I'm always having trouble, either worrying about making two 6-7 order groups with not enough to do what they need to, or one ~10 and one 3-4 that absolutely does not have enough to do its job...

Well, the idea was that the Thorakitai link would Forward Deployment L1 up to pretty much Spitfire/LRL range at start, and fight near the midline while the Myrms booked it up to and past them, so ideally I wouldn't need the ranges of a HMG, as it'd be an active detriment once things closed. No good?

Also, for the second link, can't use Netrods because Biotechvore makes it hell to get them down and if they don't go close enough to the middle will easily kill them. Although a Lamedh and a Daleth or two Lamedhs and a Minesweeper Probot could work... but then that's either an 11- or 12-order list... maybe either ditch a Devabot for a Lamedh, or a Devabot and downgrade BSG Mrym for Chain Myrm, while grabbing a Daleth? Would bring up to 10 orders...

    So either:

Also, for the first list, if I ditch the Spitfire Myrm and the Myrm Officer in favour of Machaon and a BSG Myrm, I can swap out the Marksman Rifle Thorakites for a HMG Thorakitai, while keeping Alke. It does mean the only heavy weapons in the Myrm link are a Mk12 and a BSG, though...

(Since Biotechvore will be the second round, there's also the technically-suboptimal option of still making Alke the Lieutenant, despite Machaon being there, since people will have seen me using Machaon as the LT in the first round and may expect him to be so again since he's in the list)

    Does that look better?

If Aleph is not fit for 10 orders list, who is ? I mean, both vanilla and it's sectorials are among the best to fill one single group armies.

As for 10 orders vs 13-15 orders, it's a matter of choice, both can work very well, and Aleph has solid choices for both of them (ex. netrods + lameds + shukras for 11+ orders, posthumans, strong infiltrators, overall elite troops and powerful links for 10 orders)

I personally think that unless you’re going to a Limited Insertion tournament, nobody should run a 10 orders list. They can do well, but I think every 10 orders list can be tweaked into a superior 2 groups list. The benefit to only running 10 orders are much smaller than the downsides in my opinion.

Now, if I was to go to a Limited Insertion tournament, ALEPH would for sure be in my top choices.

With 13-14 order lists I tend to end up with a 10 dude group, and then a second smaller group of troopers that won't be doing much, like totes remotes, Supportware hackers, TO snipers, etc, that can be used to refill the main group of necessary.

And not only yours choice, latest Interplanetario a bunch of player choose to play "Aleph (or SSA)" because the Tournament was LI. The other choice was IE. Both were around the 40% of the total players. And this for something :)

Still, a few armies can do well playing IL no matter if the tournament uses or not the extra. Aleph is one of them.

A great Aleph secondary combat group is a posthuman + net rods. You’ve got great specialists, who can always use orders to get into position and do objectives, and you’re spending one command token @ max to move the good stuff into the main group, saving tokens for coordinated orders.

Hm. So, those two options for the Biotechvore I think are still my best, but for the other two missions I've messed with the lists a little, and have four prospective ones now, all quite similar, but the devil's in the details:

The third could have been tweaked to upgrade the Myrm BSG to a Lieutenant Myrm Officer with BSG, but that would have put three Eclipse Grenades and only one Smoke in the list, without the benefit of having CoC. I felt being 5 points down and not having NWI on my BSG was worth it for the extra Smoke, when I have Teucer with his MSV2 in the list to take advantage of it.

    A few things to consider:

Hector is pretty great in limited insertion - his lieutenant order gets converted to a regular order thanks to strategos, allowing you to use it without breaking him out of a fireteam (and giving you an 11 regular order list in LI). Plasma rifle + x-visor is pretty sweet, and he's a tough sonofabitch with arm5, bts6, 2W+NWI and a tinbot. Note that the tinbot applies to his entire fireteam, and doesn't get bypassed by killer hackers. Oh and stun grenades are fun.

MSV is a pretty great combo with myrmidon smoke, so fitting one in there would be nice.

In general, you want 1 main gunfighter in a link, a second would be there to cover weaknesses - for example, Nessie+Feuerbach Thora is good, Nessie+HMG is bad. Phoenix/Eudoros+Spitfire Myrm is likewise redundant.

2 well-rounded teams + 2 useful tools is my basic setup for SP LI.

Here's one of my LI Phalanx lists for your consideration:

    Hector's Heroes
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]10
HECTOR Lieutenant Plasma Rifle, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades + 1 TinBot A / Heavy Pistol, EXP CC Weapon. (0 | 71)
MACHAON Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 38)
MYRMIDON Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0.5 | 31)
MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16)
    ALKÊ Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 25)
    THORAKITES Feuerbach, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 22)
    THORAKITES Engineer Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 18)
THORAKITES (Forward Observer, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
    ATALANTA MULTI Sniper Rifle + TinBot E (Spotter) / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 39)
SCYLLA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device UPGRADE: Maestro) Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser + 1 Devabot Charybdis / Pistol, E/M CC Weapon. (0.5 | 27)
[IMG] DEVABOT CHARYBDIS Heavy Flamethrower / Electric Pulse. (7)

    6 SWC | 300 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

    And the breakdown:
Hector is your beatstick in the myrm link. X-visor brings his plasma up to +0 out to 32" and the impact template lets you ignore cover. Machaon brings heals and eclipse grenades to the party. The assault hacker is another specialist, gives you some additional tools against HI and TAGs, and is protected (a little) from killer hackers thanks to Hector's tinbot (and the fact that Hector's himself is hackable)

Since we've spent a lot of points but have plenty of SWC, we go with Nessie for our Thorakites link. A Feuerbach covers her weaknesses, the engineer is a specialist and can fix ODD/IMM, the FO has 360 visor + flash pulse for ARO goodness.

So that's our link teams, what else can we bring to the table? Scylla+bot can go into impersonation and safely move a repeater in range of HI or TAGs, allowing your assault hacker to do stuff outside LoS. She can also target enemy hackers with her KHD and brings a heavy flamethrower template up the table. Last but not least, Atalanta is your eye in the sky with MSV+BS17 - combined with smoke from your myrmidons she's a real force multiplier.

Hope this helps, and good luck at the tournament!

Thanks for the help! I know the rule of thumb of one shooter and one weakness-coverer in links, but for some reason forgot it at some point when doing these lists - I'm sure the early versions of them stuck to that, but by the time they were posted online I had tweaked them to the point I had lost that, chasing something else entirely. But it is missing an AD trooper, which I usually consider essential... Oh well, can't fit everything in, I guess...

Think I'll either go with your list or with this:

Absolutely man, lots of stuff can work. But if you're looking to drop the assault hacker to add a BSG, I'd consider making it a CoC Officer to keep 2 specialists in the link and allow you to be even more aggressive with Hector. Teucer is brutally expensive, but we could make it work by swapping Scylla out for an Ekdromos.

The CoC officer can be combi or BSG, your preference. The eckdromos is a little toothless with only a chain rifle, but since he's got stealth he's still a solid option for assassinating cheerleaders from behind.

There's plenty of options so feel free to experiment!

I ended up building something very similar, only not putting a second specialist back in the Myrm link, going for a second Chain Rifle Myrm (much as I hate to do it) and getting a BSG Ekdromos. I edited it into my last post, but you must have already been typing yours. The point difference allowed me to keep Thrasymedes instead of Alke, and I used an HMG instead of a Feuerbach.

I almost never go without an Ekdromos AHD. This guy can do a lot of classified (Elite + Hacker + FO ones), is very mobile because of not being MI and because of super-jump, and is a very decent CC killer (for example, in my last tournament, I dropped a smoke on a table edge, he went in and CC slayed three Kazak before connecting a console).

How effective do you find him without an actual ranged weapon for FtFs? I usually go for the BSG Ekdromos and ambush people, but sometimes I still end up in a gunfight. I can't imagine picking the Chain Rifle one, and the AHD one is just the Chain Rifle one with the addition of a hacking device. Do you just dodge if someone that's not vulnerable to hacking fires at you?

I mainly use him to complete classified or threaten TAGS / bots / HI. There always is a moment when your opponent makes a placement mistake. I don't see him as a ranged killer.
Unless there are very juicy targets, I don't use the chain rifle. With stealth (MA3), you often have opportunities to sneak and CC engage someone. If no, you can still use your pistol within 0-20.
If someone fires at him, I made a mistake or he has done all he had to... I engage if I can or shoot with the chain rifle.

PS : oh, and a WIP 14 hacker / specialist is not a thing to laugh at!

A couple of notes: netrods cant be switched from combat group because theyre equipment. Secondly, theyre fine in biotechvore because they are equipment, not troopers, and as such dont have to fear the 'vore.

Why couldn't they be switched from one combat group to another? The bearer of the AI beacon is a Deployable Equipment, not the AI beacon itself, which belongs to a combat group like any trooper. Am I missing something?
