Hello everyone! Just a quick question on something our group can't quite wrap our minds around: Ghulam NCO is part of a Fireteam and he gains an ARO from an enemy model coming into his Line of Fire on his reactive turn. The Fireteam ARO is "BS Attack" and the Ghulam elects to respond by firing his Smoke Grenade Launcher. Does he have to fire the Smoke Templates on exactly on top of each other (because you can't split burst in ARO), or does the Targetless trait mean that he is free to choose two spots for his Smoke? In N3 it was ruled that even with Targetless weapons you had to designate the same spot as the "target" in ARO, but then again, back in those days a Coordinated Order involving Targetless weapons also forced you to target the spot on the table with everyone involved - which is something that the modern FAQ spesifically says you don't have to do anymore! So how should this be played? Have a great day everyone!
The situation hasn't changed since N3 as almost none of the relevant rules have meaningfully been altered, though the Impact Template rules have a clarifying text: "When using an Impact Template Weapon with the Targetless Trait (such those using Smoke Ammunition), you do not need to declare an enemy Trooper as the target; the target can be an area on the game table.". Targetless does not mean the weapon can be fired without a target, it means the weapon doesn't have to target a Trooper when you shoot it but the template is still placed centred on the target of the BS Attack. In an ARO situation the Ghulam NCO can choose to shoot their Smoke Grenade Launcher and target a spot on the ground, since this is an ARO the Ghulam if in a Fireteam has to choose the same target for both burst as per the red box "In such a situation, if the Reactive Trooper has a Burst value higher than one in ARO, they cannot split it amongst different targets." https://infinitythewiki.com/Impact_Template_Weapons https://infinitythewiki.com/Trooper_Activation#ARO:_Automatic_Reaction_Order https://infinitythewiki.com/Traits#Targetless
