Let's assume we have a building or other structure on the tabletop with a small lip around it; small enough that a silhouette 2 trooper standing right behind it would not have cover against someone at ground level; however, it *is* taller than a prone silhoutte/base height, and a trooper laying prone behind it cannot be seen from ground level. So, obviously, standing up and shooting someone at ground level means exposing oneself to fire from enemies on the ground without the benefit of cover. Can the trooper perform a lean out? I've heard the argument that because the lip is taller than the prone mini, the Lean Out cannot be performed (or at least cannot be performed in a way to maintain cover against those below). Is that how you guys interpret Lean Out?
No, assuming the barrier is higher than half the height of the Trooper's base (~1.5mm). "If there is a terrain element along the edge of the elevated position (a parapet, a barricade, a windowsill...), it cannot bethicker than 1 inch or higher than half the height of the trooper who Leans Out." A Prone mini is S0, this means that their height is the height of their base. "Prone troopers have a Silhouette (S) value of 0, that is, the equivalent height of a base"
I would not allow lean out to grant cover if the model could take the shot without moving at all, without the benefit of cover.
