Is there a list-collection?

    Hello folks,

I'm busy making new lists for our weekly Infinity evenings. There are endless possibilities, but still I reject most of the new ideas and come back to what has proven itself.

My question is whether there is such a thing as a collection of lists as one knows it from e.g. x-wing.

Maybe I can get inspired to use something else.

In the following you can see the two lists I play most of the time. With a few exceptions I play against Tohaa and don't want to miss the HRL in the CoreTeam. I also don't want to go without the Rafiq with sensor, because I always have to face clipsos, igaos and mines. In addition the high burst and DMG of the Spitfire in the core helps to cope with the SymbioMates. Right now I can't imagine going back to Vanilla.

I thank you in advance for sharing your precious resources with me.

    Not to my knowledge.
Infinity seems to have much more combinations possible than X-Wing.

I consider making the list a significant part of the fun myself.
I'd suggest you to try and get out of your comfort zone of proven and tested list - next time you'll be going for a game, take a different centerpiece model / unit you haven't been using before, and try building your list around it - if you've ever wondered how does it work, it is time to try it! Stuff on paper looks one way, but once you hit the table, it may be very, very different.

Also, if you use the same troops all the time, your opponent will eventually learn how to counter them.

@eccobold the most advice/response I've gotten that has lead to new lists was when I was putting up my own Ideas for a particular mission/opponent and asking for how others might tweak it. This has generally lead to good discussion/learning and I think that's because it is easier for the community a better idea of what you're working with as well as giving you ideas that may be harder to apply without context.

As for repeating what you play, I don't think there's a problem with that. Regular opponents will absolutely find counters, which in turn will teach you how to better use a piece.

To try new things, fun things, and learn about options that may work better. At least, that's why I change it up.

Oh no, I get that part. But that doesn't seem to be a serious desire on the part of the original post.

Easy answer. Have your opponent write your list.

I really would like to try out new lists. However, I never have the feeling that what comes out of it could really work. When I then start to pick out some central pieces, I am too quick to return to old patterns and have built a list that I have already played several times. I'm just looking for inspiration for something new.

Speaking of that: I'll play a round of "Capture and Protect" against my PanO buddies next week and I once built something new for myself. But I need your help to organize the CombatGroups. The grouping I have made is for discussion purposes only and underlines which unity should serve which purpose.

Group 1 is clearly for defense. The hacker should support with Assisted Fire. The Najjarun should repair the REMs and maybe get a bonus point at the Classifieds.

Group 2 is for the offensive. Depending on the range the HRL or the Spitfire is used. Depending on the situation, the LGL will certainly be used. With a little luck Leila can also kill a hacker and protect the Asawira and the REMs.

Group 3 goes ahead. If I have the first move, I will try with the Fiday to reach the goal, or at least to confuse the defense. If I have the second platoon, Fiday and Farzan will provide enough activity and absorb some orders.

I believe the Kameel TR makes little sense in most situations. Sure, it is a TR, but limited with Rifle's effective range. Could be an effective blocker on a tightly-packed table, but otherwise it is too expensive to be useful.
I'd downgrade both of them to simple baggage bots, or perhaps make one into an EVO, points permitting.
They also make no sense as a separate group - they lack the range and mobility to do anything useful, so their Orders are going to waste.

Your Fireteam is pretty decent, but is there a point in having a Ghulam Lt in it? He won't be able to use his Lt. Order without dropping out of the Team. Not that it is necessarily a bad thing, to keep yuor Lt. secret, but a solo Lt - like a Barid - might be able to bring that extra order to use (and I believe the extra utility of Hacker Lt is why he has the additional 0,5 SWC tax!).

Hmm, let me take a look... here:

That is, of course, a stripped down variant - you have a 26pts free maneuvering space, that could accomodate:
    - another Hassassin Farzan (even the Chain of Command version), allowing for a mid-field specialist.
    - a Hassassin Ragik (BSG or Rifle+LSG, who is more universal IMO) for an air-droppable problem solver
    - a Hassassin Lasiq rifleman for a nasty gunfighter with nice range.

Naturally, in most cases you'd want to move one Kameel back to group #2 here to make room for that model - although with Ragik, it would make sense to risk keeping him in #2 in AD, and move him to group #1 only when you intend to drop him.

    My personal choice would be

Now, you'd ask about the point of the group #2 in my writeups: what good is a group of 3-4 models if 2 models I've considered to be too small?
The trick is - this is a suppert group, so it has enough Orders for that purpose only.
Firepower? TR HMG is primairly a Reactive tool. Though with 4 Orders in the goup's Order Pool it can still move quite a distance (max 4x10"=40", or up to 24" and shoot 4 times!) if needed. The Engineer should keep in cover and use well-placed Nasmats to reach whichever model he needs to repair. With 4 Orders and Nasmat's 6-4 MOV, that's aplenty of ground he can cover that way!
The Kameel and Fanous are there primairly to provide these Orders, although the Fanous' Flash Pulse can be an useful long-range deterrent as well (with Mimetism and in Cover, while using its WIP 13 to operate the Flash Pulse, it can be a tougher nut to crack than one would expect!).

    Thank you very much Errhile!
It makes sense to at least provide the second group with enough commands to be able to act on my own and I am happy to have asked, because I myself am still too inexperienced and simply did not come up with the idea.

Besides, I didn't find your idea with the Ragik bad. I haven't used combat jumpers for far too long and I'm looking forward to the face the moment I announce the jump. That's why I picked up your list and adjusted it a bit.

I haven't used combat jumpers for far too long and I'm excited about the face the moment I announce the jump. And I like that the ragik is completely hidden in the second group. But how exactly does this work with moving to group 1? Did I understand correctly that I do this during the order count phase so that the ragik can use the commands from group 1 immediately? Of course, it is assumed that there is space in the 1 group. Unconcious troops are also part of the group, so I would have to issue two command tokens, wouldn't I?

Yup, I meant using a Command Token to move the Ragik to the Group #1.
Assuming you aren't going to do it in your Turn #1, there is a decent chance you'll be down some models already when the drop is required - and some of them are not unlikely to be dead (Unconscious models do occupy slots in a Combat Group, Dead models do not), so that'll take 1 Command Token.
If not, you could still use him for a limited combat run with the orders from the #2 only. That'd be highly situational, but still, if you could AD: Combat Jump him in a good spot (remeber your Barid Hacker can spend an Order - even his Lt. Order - to provide Landing Assistance), then spend the Order to walk around a corner and blast a juicy target (like, shotgun a Fireteam) then lay a Suppressive Fire, for example, this may just as well work.
Or simply pump Group #2's two Orders into Ragik laying waste to whatever you need wasted (well, and Ragik being able to hunt...). Sometimes it is that single hard to access enemy model that you just have to get rid of to allow you freedom of maneuver...

Nb. with the list above, I'd really keep the Shihab in Group #2, so even if there's nothing for the Najjarun to do, you could use two Orders to shoot the HMG. Fanous doesn't offer the possibility - it can just as well sit on ARO duty in Group #1 and contend itself with generatign an Order for you.
Note: it is worth to have a Repeater (or Barid himself. Note - this is another nice way to utilize his Lt. Order) in ZoC of your Shihab, so you could apply Assisted Targeting to it. TR HMG with active Marksmanship L2 is a nasty thing, both in Active and Reactive turn!

Yes, I still have my difficulties with the meaningful distribution in the groups. That's why I asked and I'm all the happier that I now have a list that I can't wait to try. :spock-hand:

I think a common practice is this:
At least 8 regular orders in group 1. If playing multiple combat groups, have enough order in group two to do something meaningful with them. This style of build is a lot more forgiving and adaptable than others can be.

(This is just common, not a requirement, and I’ve played effective lists with wonky combat groups).

    Exactly.

Now, making such a small group you need to think on what it is to do.
    • A single-model group won't be able to do more than just ARO (well OK, reposition & shoot once, with its own Order). Which is why I'd often set up a TR HMG in such a role: TR HMG drone is the model least affected by Order shortage. Plus, you can have the model jump Groups to bring #1 up after you've taken losses. In Hassassin Bahram, it is actually a decent place for a Hassassin Ayyar, as he can jump groups as he pleases, without needing to spend Command Tokens (thanks to his Free Agent ability).
    • A two-model group doesn't seem - in my opinion - to have a significant advantage over a single-model group, except it is a nice way to hide your AD / TO Camo's presence (being in a Group of its own forces you to inform your opponent that you have a two Combat Group list, that group having no models on-table is a dead giveaway that you have something in the air / hidden. As opposed to "group #2? That's that lone Fanous / Shihab over there" which tends to be perceived as Order reserve to bring to the main group).
    • A three-model group was a very popular layout in my meta in the late 2ed, being buildt as a support group - with doctor and / or engineer operating via G:Servant bots, a supporting hacker, an EVO Repeater (back in the day when it wasn't an EVO Hacker, you know...), a line trooper or two, or perhaps some inexpensive REMs, or the ever-popular TR HMG. In a pinch, a sniper (primarily on ARO duty, but sometimes you could spend the group's Orders on popping a few shots at a target of opportunity...).
Now, a four-model group would be roughly the same as 3-model one, though you could also lean towards 5-model group, too, that would be capable of powering a forward-operating model of their own, allowing you a secondary operating force to take care of a less-obvious avenue of approach, or try to take on an objective. My favourite in that role seemed to be a Rafiq: fast, Specialist, and could use Supportware to its advantage.

Worth noting that the Ayyar can move groups for free, making him a clutch order generating killing machine.

With the help of your hints and tips I have worked on a few ideas and lists. My buddy and I have agreed that everyone has to bring two lists of the same Sectorials/Generic and decide for one of his lists after drawing the Classifieds. Even though I'm currently tending strongly towards the first list, I wanted to have at least a second list ready.

But now I'm back with a list of more than 10 figures, without knowing how to ideally divide the list into groups. This time there are also some irregular units.

In short: Barid Hacker LT, Leila as Wildcard to refill Haris, Asawira/Muyib Harris, Mutts and Daylami for Defence, Fiday+Al-Djabel to capture, Ayyar because I think FreeAgent is interesting and I had the points left. Ragiks would probably make more sense, but I thought I could use more commands. Maybe it would be better to use two Farzan with minelayer instead of the Ayyar to get some more control over the board.

What do you think about this approach?
