So this scenario came up last night; A draal saboteur with active stratuscloud and a kieel-saan unit are in a link. The draal is inside a zero vis smoke zone. The kiel-saan is behind the zone. The link activates and moves. The draal leaves the zero vis zone. The kiel-saan enters the low vis zone created by the stratus cloud, and then enters the zero vis zone, but does not leave the zero vis zone. A lynx trooper with plasma rifle reveals in ARO and attacks the draal, hitting it and the kiel-saan with the impact template. The spiral link declares dodge. The kiel-saan has never had LOF to the lynx. What penalty, if any, does the kiel-saan suffer to its PH for dodging? I wasn't sure which of the following would apply; - dodging a template when you don't have LOF to the attacker - declaring dodge while inside a low visibility zone - declaring dodge when you're the target of of a BS attack through a zero vis zone
How many members were in the Link?(was it a Triad-core?) 4 or more would give them Sixth Sense Level 2 which allows the fireteam members to answer to attacks that go through a zero visibility zone, or penalties regarding LOF/or Lack thereof to be ignored. If this is the case they will dodge on Base PH, and each troop must win the FTF against the template independently of the successes of other members. If they had 3 members or less they have no sixth sense, so the only penalty available would be lacking LOF with the template. Whenever a Trooper is attacked from a Zero Visibility zone they can dodge without Penalties, or they can shoot back with the -6 penalty(unless they have sixth sense L2)
There is no legal way to get a Kiel-Saan in a core or tricore, but in this case it was a two-man triad.
Wow, that's a good one. Here's my crack at it. I'm fairly certain the LvZ doesn't do anything in this case. "If an area would be affected by two or more Visibility Zones of whatever type, apply only the most obscuring." [emphasis added] This tells me that if your LvZ and ZvZ overlap, you only consider the ZvZ. This, of course, highlights one of the quirks of visibility zones in that Poor or Low visibility zones are actually worse to dodge through than a ZvZ (IIRC this was done for balance reasons). Now this might lead you to roll an unmodified PH, but my sense is that this language is assuming the attack is not a template. For that, we have to go to the dodge rules: "A trooper may attempt to Dodge a Template Weapon without LoF to the attacker, by passing a PH-3 Roll." I would say this take precedence over the previous unmodified PH dodge through a ZvZ rule. Conclusion: roll a PH-3 for the Kiel-Saan
1st up: You're doing things in the wrong order. The Lynx reveals and places a template in ARO, touching both troopers. THEN you declare second short skill. THEN you measure. THEN you roll the Lynx' BS Attack and compare it to any FTF rolls the two Spiral might've declared and is now rolling. So, Dodge through ZVZ: if you could draw LOF without the zone being there, it's an unmodified Dodge (but it doesn't remove other MODs of course) Dodge through Low Vis: Dodge requires LOF and as such will be penalised by the zone. Advice: pick your reference point where you don't have to deal with the Low Vis zone if you're able.
